The objective of this study is to evaluate uterine muscle activity during pregnancy, primarily during labour and delivery, by studying the bioelectric signals transmitted by the uterus as well as the maternal and fetal heart. For this purpose, a prototype of a non-invasive monitoring device was built entitled the dynamic Electrohysterogram (dEHG). With this device, one should be able to characterize not only the amplitude and duration of uterine contractions but also their progression, allowing for a better understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of labour work and consequently the fetal and maternal adaptive response

Despite great efforts in the past years, current purification strategies still lack specificity, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. The development of more sustainable functional materials and processes needs to address pressing environmental goals, efficiency, scale-up, and cost. Herein, l-leucine (LEU)-molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), LEU-MIPs, are presented as novel biomolecular fishing polymers for affinity sustainable biopurification. Rational design was performed using quantum mechanics calculations and molecular modeling for selecting the most appropriate monomers. LEU-MIPs were synthesized for the first time by two different green approaches, supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) technology and mechanochemistry. A significant imprinting factor of 12 and a binding capacity of 27 mg LEU/g polymer were obtained for the LEU-MIP synthesized in scCO2 using 2-vinylpyridine as a functional monomer, while the LEU-MIP using acrylamide as a functional monomer synthesized by mechanochemistry showed an imprinting factor of 1.4 and a binding capacity of 18 mg LEU/g polymer, both systems operating at a low binding concentration (0.5 mg LEU/mL) under physiological conditions. As expected, at a higher concentration (1.5 mg LEU/mL), the binding capacity was considerably increased. Both green technologies show high potential in obtaining ready-to-use, stable, and low-cost polymers with a molecular recognition ability for target biomolecules, being promising materials for biopurification processes.publishersversionpublishe

QuantSat-PT: an attitude determination and control system architecture for QKD

    Get PDF
This article presents the QuantSaT-PT project, an effort to create the first Portuguese nanosatellite for space to ground quantum communication. Focused on the Attitude Determination and Control System, it describes the different elements that allow for the attainment of diverse accuracy levels required for separate mission stages. Given the harsh pointing precision necessary for establishing a quantum downlink, the implementation of this module presents a major challenge in the Cubesat field. Furthermore, the introduced architecture aims to reduce system cost by replacing the state-of-the-art star tracker with ground beacon detection

Genomic epidemiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb), the pathogen responsible for tuberculosis (TB) poses as the major cause of death among infectious diseases. The knowledge about the molecular diversity of M.tb enables the implementation of more effective surveillance and control measures and, nowadays, Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) holds the potential to produce high-resolution epidemiological data in a high-throughput manner. Florianópolis, the state capital of Santa Catarina (SC) in south Brazil, shows a high TB incidence (46.0/100,000). Here we carried out a WGS-based evaluation of the M.tb strain diversity, drug-resistance and ongoing transmission in the capital metropolitan region. Resistance to isoniazid, rifampicin, streptomycin was identified respectively in 4.0% (n = 6), 2.0% (n = 3) and 1.3% (n = 2) of the 151 studied strains by WGS. Besides, resistance to pyrazinamide and ethambutol was detected in 0.7% (n = 1) and reistance to ethionamide and fluoroquinolone (FQ) in 1.3% (n = 2), while a single (0.7%) multidrug-resistant (MDR) strain was identified. SNP-based typing classified all isolates into M.tb Lineage 4, with high proportion of sublineages LAM (60.3%), T (16.4%) and Haarlem (7.9%). The average core-genome distance between isolates was 420.3 SNPs, with 43.7% of all isolates grouped across 22 genomic clusters thereby showing the presence of important ongoing TB transmission events. Most clusters were geographically distributed across the study setting which highlights the need for an urgent interruption of these large transmission chains. The data conveyed by this study shows the presence of important and uncontrolled TB transmission in the metropolitan area and provides precise data to support TB control measures in this region.publishersversionpublishe

Os retratos de Maria Isabel e Maria Francisca de Bragança, de Nicolas-Antoine Taunay

Nicolas-Antoine Taunay, French landscape painter, produced also several portraits during his stay at the Rio de Janeiro Court. In this city, in 1816, he paints the queen Carlota Joaquina and all her daughters. In this group, two portraits have a very special way: the paintings still today catalogued as Maria Francisca and Maria Teresa, but probably being Maria Isabel and Maria Francisca de Assis - princesses that, in this year, left Brazil to marry the Spanish King Fernando VII, and his brother Carlos Maria Isidro de Bourbon. In this article, beyond to describe these portraits (and analyse the identities of the portrayed princesses), I analyse their functions in the Court society and the mains artists of this gender in Europe. I will discuss, as well, the hypothesis about the Taunay choices. In this sense, I will analyse the possible circulation of the typologies of portrait between Italy, Portugal, Spain and France, understanding these productions by Taunay and the functions occupied by these portraits in the political relations between Brazil and Europe.
