Micromobility : testing suitability through fcd to improve overall mobility

    Get PDF
Papers presented virtually at the 41st International Southern African Transport Conference on 10-13 July 2061Micromobility refers to the use of small, lightweight, and often non-motorised vehicles for short trips and last-mile connections that can either by privately owned, or part of a transport offering through a fleet of vehicles owned by a mobility service provider. Micromobility solutions have the potential to significantly reduce congestion and improve the urban environment. This paper aims to investigate how floating car data (FCD) can be used to evaluate the opportunity for micromobility to unlock mobility solutions for both short trips (5 km to 10 km) and long trips (>10 km), to encourage more sustainable urban movement. This paper investigates micromobility options using the town of Stellenbosch as a case study. The potential role of micromobility is investigated by considering typical trip patterns in Stellenbosch, collected through commercial FCD detailing motorised trips. The option of creating linkages between micromobility and infrastructural elements such as vehicle parking areas and “park and ride” facilities to increase the reach of micromobility are also considered. The research revealed a high level of suitability of micromobility for internal trips made within Stellenbosch, and external trips heading into Stellenbosch from surrounds when coupled with infrastructure upgrades (“park and ride”) and ride-share facilities. The paper also demonstrates the benefits of FCD for micromobility planning

The influence of the rare earth ions radii on the Low Spin to Intermediate Spin state transition in lanthanide cobaltite perovskites: LaCoO3 vs. HoCoO3

We present first principles LDA+U calculations of electronic structure and magnetic state for LaCoO3 and HoCoO3. Low Spin to Intermediate Spin state transition was found in our calculations using experimental crystallographic data for both materials with a much higher transition temperature for HoCoO3, which agrees well with the experimental estimations. Low Spin state t6e0 (non-magnetic) to Intermediate Spin state t5e1 (magnetic) transition of Co(3+) ions happens due to the competition between crystal field t_2g-e_g splitting and effective exchange interaction between 3dd spin-orbitals. We show that the difference in crystal structure parameters for HoCoO3 and LaCoO3 due to the smaller ionic radius of Ho ion comparing with La ion results in stronger crystal field splitting for HoCoO3 (0.09 eV ~ 1000 K larger than for LaCoO3) and hence tip the balance between the Low Spin and Intermediate Spin states to the non-magnetic solution in HoCoO3.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure

Structure factor of polymers interacting via a short range repulsive potential: application to hairy wormlike micelles

We use the Random Phase Approximation (RPA) to compute the structure factor, S(q), of a solution of chains interacting through a soft and short range repulsive potential V. Above a threshold polymer concentration, whose magnitude is essentially controlled by the range of the potential, S(q) exhibits a peak whose position depends on the concentration. We take advantage of the close analogy between polymers and wormlike micelles and apply our model, using a Gaussian function for V, to quantitatively analyze experimental small angle neutron scattering profiles of semi-dilute solutions of hairy wormlike micelles. These samples, which consist in surfactant self-assembled flexible cylinders decorated by amphiphilic copolymer, provide indeed an appropriate experimental model system to study the structure of sterically interacting polymer solutions

Distributional impact of taxes and social transfers in Russia over the downturn

    Get PDF
Low oil prices and the recession in Russia which started in 2014 are increasing pressures for fiscal consolidation, after more than a decade of prosperity. This paper assesses the distributional impact of the main tax and social spending programs in Russia in 2014 by applying a state-of-the-art incidence analysis. Overall, the Russian welfare state achieves a moderate reduction in inequality through tax-benefit policies by international standards. Most redistribution occurs through pensions. Major limits on the redistributive effect of tax-benefit policy include the large share of tax revenues that come from (regressive) indirect taxes, the neutral impact of personal income taxes and the low share of spending that goes on social assistance targeted to low-income groups. Tax-benefit policy also has an important impact on the age distribution of income, as households of working-age people (with and without children) subsidize pensioner households

Orbital state and magnetic properties of LiV_2 O_4

LiV_2 O_4 is one of the most puzzling compounds among transition metal oxides because of its heavy fermion like behavior at low temperatures. In this paper we present results for the orbital state and magnetic properties of LiV_2 O_4 obtained from a combination of density functional theory within the local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The DMFT equations are solved by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The trigonal crystal field splits the V 3d orbitals such that the a_{1g} and e_{g}^{pi} orbitals cross the Fermi level, with the former being slightly lower in energy and narrower in bandwidth. In this situation, the d-d Coulomb interaction leads to an almost localization of one electron per V ion in the a_{1g} orbital, while the e_{g}^{pi} orbitals form relatively broad bands with 1/8 filling. 2The theoretical high-temperature paramagnetic susceptibility chi(T) follows a Curie-Weiss law with an effective paramagnetic moment p_{eff}=1.65 in agreement with the experimental results.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 2 table

Wetting films on chemically heterogeneous substrates

Based on a microscopic density functional theory we investigate the morphology of thin liquidlike wetting films adsorbed on substrates endowed with well-defined chemical heterogeneities. As paradigmatic cases we focus on a single chemical step and on a single stripe. In view of applications in microfluidics the accuracy of guiding liquids by chemical microchannels is discussed. Finally we give a general prescription of how to investigate theoretically the wetting properties of substrates with arbitrary chemical structures.Comment: 56 pages, RevTeX, 20 Figure

Reflecting back and forwards: The ebb and flow of peer-reviewed reflective practice research in sport

    Get PDF
Researchers in sport have claimed that reflective practice is important for competent practice. Evidence supporting this claim is sparse, highly theoretical and located within a variety of domains. The aim of this study was to assimilate and analyse the last 12 years of reflective practice literature within the sport domain in order to identify new areas of inquiry, emerging trends with regard to findings or methodology, and to identify implications for future research and practice. A sample of 68 papers published between 2001 and 2012 was examined, and investigated for the research locations, data collection methods utilised, and the professions and communities involved. The paper concludes with some suggestions for future research

Magnetic moment of the (rho) meson in light cone QCD

The magnetic moment Ό\mu of the "rho" meson is studied in QCD light cone sum rules, and it is found that "mu = (2.3 pm 0.5)". A comparison of our result on the magnetic moment of the "rho" meson with the predictions of the other approaches, is presented.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, LaTeX formatte
