This paper describes a 5th year design studio in an Architecture and Urban Design undergraduate program which adopted a parametric and performance-based design strategy for the design of high-rise buildings. The studio included the use of environmental and structural analyses, as well as parametric and algorithmic modeling for incorporating the results of these analyses to the generation of form based on performance.  Besides, the studio included an intensive use of digital fabrication equipment for the production of scale models. The results show the importance of having an interdisciplinary team of instructors in the design studio, and the feasibility of reproducing, even if in a simplified manner, the integrated design process, with the use of CAD/CAE/CAM technologies, which is ever more present in architectural offices.

A prospective cohort study was conducted during a 15-month period to compare nosocomial infections (NIs) among pediatric patients without (n = 989) and with (n = 50) symptomatic human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Patients with symptomatic HIV infection presented higher overall NI incidence density rates (relative risk, 1.65; P = .0001), and may represent a population at high risk for the acquisition of N

To identify the main factors of the physical domain modified after kidney transplantation and analyze the influence of those aspects in the perception of Overall quality of life (QOL). METHOD Longitudinal study, conducted with 63 chronic kidney patients, evaluated before and after kidney transplant, using the quality of life scale proposed by the World Health Organization. RESULTS We observed significant improvement in the physical aspects of QOL after kidney transplantation. Significant correlations were observed between physical aspects and the Overall QOL. CONCLUSION The kidney transplant generated improvement in all physical aspects of QOL. The factors that showed stronger correlation with the Overall QOL before the transplant were the capacity to work and pain. After the transplant, the perception of need for treatment was the factor that showed stronger correlation with the Overall QOL

OBJECTIVES: to analyze the perception of health professionals about exclusive breastfeeding in Family Health Strategy units in the city of Macaé. METHODS: qualitative study carried out in four units of the Family Health Strategy in the city of Macaé, Rio de Janeiro. Thirty health professionals were interviewed from March to May 2019. Textual contents were processed in the IRaMuTeQ® software by the Descending Hierarchical Classification. RESULTS: professionals use different strategies for actions to promote, protect and support breastfeeding in prenatal consultations, but social and cultural determinants are important issues that interfere in this process, the involvement of the family being essential for the success of this practice. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: health professionals, including nurses, need training and qualification to strengthen the support and social network of pregnant women and insert the family in the different strategies used to improve adherence to exclusive breastfeeding

Objective: To unveil the subjectivity present in family care for the child with a stoma, from the understanding of the construction of his autonomy. Method: A descriptive and exploratory study using a script of interviews with qualitative analysis with 07 mothers of children with a stoma. The place was a university pediatric hospital located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The data collection took place from September to November 2011. Results: The interpretation of the speech was made through the Thematic Analysis. After categorization of the speeches, emerged the following category, the subjectivity of families in child care with a stoma. Conclusion: The experience of families facing a new reality imposed by the treatment makes reflections of sensations, which we consider as subjectivity. The maternal senses in relation to care and child development are based on subjectivity, in which are involved cultural nuances inherent in every being, becoming important the alliance of knowledge between professional and client

The aim of the present study was to perform an in vitro analysis of the antimicrobial and antiproliferative potential of an extract from Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan (angico) and chemically characterize the crude extract. Antimicrobial action was evaluated based on the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal/fungicidal concentration, and the inhibition of formation to oral biofilm. Cell morphology was determined through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Six strains of tumor cells were used for the determination of antiproliferative potential. The extract demonstrated strong antifungal activity against Candida albicans ATCC 18804 (MIC = 0.031 mg/mL), with similar activity found regarding the ethyl acetate fraction. The extract and active fraction also demonstrated the capacity to inhibit the formation of Candida albicans to oral biofilm after 48 hours, with median values equal to or greater than the control group, but the difference did not achieve statistical significance (P > 0.05). SEM revealed alterations in the cell morphology of the yeast. Regarding antiproliferative activity, the extract demonstrated cytostatic potential in all strains tested. The present findings suggest strong antifungal potential for Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan as well as a tendency toward diminishing the growth of human tumor cells. The aim of the present study was to perform an in vitro analysis of the antimicrobial and antiproliferative potential of an extract from Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.)
