The weight-length relationship has a wide application in fish biology and fisheries management, such as for predicting weight from length data, or for the calculation of production and biomass of a fish stock. Weight-length relationship, weight conversion factors and condition factor are presented from a decade (2006 to 2015) for both stocks of black anglerfish (Lophius budegassa) in southern Bay of Biscay and Galician waters (ICES Div. VIIIc-IXa, southern stock) and in Celtic Seas (ICES Div. VIIb,c,h,j,k, northern stock). A total of 2035 and 1263 specimens were sampled respectively in each stock from commercial landings and research surveys. Total length [Lt (cm)], total weight [Wt (g)], “commercial” weight (gutted with liver) [Wgl (g)] and “scientific” weight (gutted without liver) [Wg (g)] were obtained. The weight-length relationships for the combined sexes were: Lt = 0.020 Wt2.916; Lt = 0.017 Wgl2.929; Lt = 0.017 Wg2.922 in Div. VIIIc-IXa, and Lt = 0.025 Wt2.841; Lt = 0.013 Wgl2.984; Lt = 0.013 Wg2.971 in Div. VIIb,c,h,j,k. These updated values can be used in the annual assessment of the state of both stocks in the ICES working group, replacing those previous estimated more than a decade ago. The conversion factor (total weight - gutted weight) here estimated is also useful in fisheries management due to the commercial landings of this species are available in gutted weight. The evolution of the condition factor along the year, indicator of nutritional status evolution, is estimated and can be a proxy for estimating the spawning season. Its evolution is studied throughout the year for immature and mature individuals of each sex. The results are similar to the previously estimated in other studies

Introduction: No controlled clinical trials had studied the role of maraviroc (MRV) in fully suppressed patients [1]. Methods and Materials: MRV-cohort is an observational, retrospective, multicentric (27 sites) large cohort study of patients starting MRV in clinical practice under different circumstances, with at least 48 weeks of follow-up. For the present analysis we selected all those patients starting with an HIV-RNAB50 copies/mL. Demographics, baseline CD4 cell count, past history of antiretroviral treatment (ART), tropism, reasons for MRV use, MRV based therapy and change/end of MRV use were assessed. Paired analysis of lipid, hepatic and kidney profile changes and univariate and multivariate analyses of HIV-RNAB50 copies/mL at 48 weeks were explored. Results: We included 247 out of 667 subjects from the entire cohort. At study entry, their median age was 47 years, 23% were women, 31% MSM, 49% had CDC category C, median CD4 counts were 468 cells/mm3 , 46% were HCV and 4.5% AgHBs. Tropism information was available in 197 (94% R5). Median length of prior ARTV was 10.7 years, with exposure to a median of three drug families. Main reasons for prescribing MRV were: toxicity 38%, inmunodiscordance 23%, simplification 19% and admission in a clinical trial 10.4%. MRV based therapies used were MRV2NRTIs 9%, MRVPI 46%, MRVPIother 40% and MRVother 5%. At 48 weeks, 23% of patients had changed or finished MRV therapy due to toxicity 2.4%, virological failure 2%, immunological failure 1.2%, simplification 3,2%, trial requirement 9.7%, medical decision 2.8%, treatment suspension 1.2% and unknown 0.4%. At 48 weeks, no significant changes were observed in lipid, hepatic or kidney profiles, and 85% of patients remained with HIV-RNAB50 copies/mL. Focusing on viral response univariate and multivariate models did not show any significant baseline variable explaining viral failure. Conclusions: In clinical practice MRV was used, mostly in R5 positive patients, with adequate efficacy and tolerance, but important number of patients changed due to non-clinical reasons. In this scenario neither reason for use of MRV nor MRVbased therapy explained viral failure

Background: in therapeutic decision-making, the importance of knowledge of the drug receptor theory content is recognized; however, there is a lack of proposals from interdisciplinarity, which is useful as reference for teachers to improve the teaching of this process. Objective: to design a methodological proposal with an interdisciplinary approach for the teaching-learning of the content theory of the pharmacological receptor in the Medicine career. Methods: study carried out at the Cienfuegos University of Medical Sciences, during the 2018-2019 school year. From a universe of 250 fourth-year medical students, 75 students were selected through a simple random probability sampling, to whom a survey was applied. 19 professionals were surveyed corresponding to all the teachers involved in the process for teaching the subjects Pharmacology I, Molecular Biology and Nervous, Endocrine and Reproductive Systems. Five key informants selected by intentional non-probability sampling were interviewed. In addition, a documentary analysis was carried out that included the study plans and programs of the Medicine career in Cuba to identify the interrelationship between the disciplines. Results: based on the weaknesses detected, a proposal was elaborated that will facilitate the linking of the subjects, which will allow greater importance and relevance of the knowledge and pharmacological skills in medical training from an interdisciplinary perspective. Conclusions: the experts considered that the proposal will contribute favorably to the preparation of teachers in response to the current medical training model.</p

The Second Oncogenic Hit Determines the Cell Fate of ETV6-RUNX1 Positive Leukemia

    Get PDF
ETV6-RUNX1 is almost exclusively associated with childhood B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL), but the consequences of ETV6-RUNX1 expression on cell lineage decisions during B-cell leukemogenesis are completely unknown. Clinically silent ETV6-RUNX1 preleukemic clones are frequently found in neonatal cord blood, but few carriers develop B-ALL as a result of secondary genetic alterations. The understanding of the mechanisms underlying the first transforming steps could greatly advance the development of non-toxic prophylactic interventions. Using genetic lineage tracing, we examined the capacity of ETV6-RUNX1 to instruct a malignant phenotype in the hematopoietic lineage by cell-specific Cre-mediated activation of ETV6-RUNX1 from the endogenous Etv6 gene locus. Here we show that, while ETV6-RUNX1 has the propensity to trigger both T- and B-lymphoid malignancies, it is the second hit that determines tumor cell identity. To instigate leukemia, both oncogenic hits must place early in the development of hematopoietic/precursor cells, not in already committed B-cells. Depending on the nature of the second hit, the resulting B-ALLs presented distinct entities that were clearly separable based on their gene expression profiles. Our findings give a novel mechanistic insight into the early steps of ETV6-RUNX1+ B-ALL development and might have major implications for the potential development of ETV6-RUNX1+ B-ALL prevention strategies
