Principal Component Analysis of SDSS Stellar Spectra
We apply Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to ~100,000 stellar spectra
obtained by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). In order to avoid strong
non-linear variation of spectra with effective temperature, the sample is
binned into 0.02 mag wide intervals of the g-r color (-0.20<g-r<0.90, roughly
corresponding to MK spectral types A3 to K3), and PCA is applied independently
for each bin. In each color bin, the first four eigenspectra are sufficient to
describe the observed spectra within the measurement noise. We discuss
correlations of eigencoefficients with metallicity and gravity estimated by the
Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE) Stellar
Parameters Pipeline. The resulting high signal-to-noise mean spectra and the
other three eigenspectra are made publicly available. These data can be used to
generate high quality spectra for an arbitrary combination of effective
temperature, metallicity, and gravity within the parameter space probed by the
SDSS. The SDSS stellar spectroscopic database and the PCA results presented
here offer a convenient method to classify new spectra, to search for unusual
spectra, to train various spectral classification methods, and to synthesize

Ultradeep Ks Imaging in the GOODS-N
We present an ultradeep Ks-band image that covers 0.5*0.5 deg^2 centered on
the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-North (GOODS-N). The image reaches
a 5 \sigma depth of Ks(AB) = 24.45 in the GOODS-N region, which is as deep as
the GOODS-N Spitzer Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) 3.6 \mu m image. We present a
new method of constructing IRAC catalogs that uses the higher spatial
resolution Ks image and catalog as priors and iteratively subtracts fluxes from
the IRAC images to estimate the IRAC fluxes. Our iterative method is different
from the \chi^2 approach adopted by other groups. We verified our results using
data taken in two different epochs of observations, as well as by comparing our
colors with the colors of stars and with the colors derived from model spectral
energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies at various redshifts. We make available
to the community our WIRCam Ks-band image and catalog (94951 objects in 0.25
deg^2), the Interactive Data Language (IDL) pipeline used for reducing the
WIRCam images, and our IRAC 3.6 to 8.0 \mu m catalog (16950 objects in 0.06
deg^2 at 3.6 \mu m). With this improved Ks and IRAC catalog and a large
spectroscopic sample from our previous work, we study the color-magnitude and
color-color diagrams of galaxies. We compare the effectiveness of using Ks and
IRAC colors to select active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and galaxies at various
redshifts. We also study a color selection of z = 0.65--1.2 galaxies using the

The effectiveness of community-based coordinating interventions in dementia care:a meta-analysis and subgroup analysis of intervention components
Abstract Background Interventions aiming to coordinate services for the community-based dementia population vary in components, organisation and implementation. In this review we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of community-based care coordinating interventions on health outcomes and investigate whether specific components of interventions influence their effects. Methods We searched four databases from inception to April 2017: Medline, The Cochrane Library, EMBASE and PsycINFO. This was aided by a search of four grey literature databases, and backward and forward citation tracking of included papers. Title and abstract screening was followed by a full text screen by two independent reviewers, and quality was assessed using the CASP appraisal tool. We then conducted meta-analyses and subgroup analyses. Results A total of 14 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) involving 10,372 participants were included in the review. Altogether we carried out 12 meta-analyses and 19 subgroup analyses. Meta-analyses found coordinating interventions showed a statistically significant improvement in both patient behaviour measured using the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) (mean difference (MD) = −9.5; 95% confidence interval (CI): −18.1 to −1.0; p = 0.03; number of studies (n) = 4; I2 = 88%) and caregiver burden (standardised mean difference (SMD) = −0.54; 95% CI: -1.01 to −0.07; p = 0.02; n = 5, I2 = 92%) compared to the control group. Subgroup analyses found interventions using a case manager with a nursing background showed a greater positive effect on caregiver quality of life than those that used case managers from other professional backgrounds (SMD = 0.94 versus 0.03, respectively; p < 0.001). Interventions that did not provide supervision for the case managers showed greater effectiveness for reducing the percentage of patients that are institutionalised compared to those that provided supervision (odds ratio (OR) = 0.27 versus 0.96 respectively; p = 0.02). There was little evidence of effects on other outcomes, or that other intervention components modify the intervention effects. Conclusion Results show that coordinating interventions in dementia care has a positive impact on some outcomes, namely patient behaviour and caregiver burden, but the evidence is inconsistent and results were not strong enough to draw definitive conclusions on general effectiveness. With the rising prevalence of dementia, effective complex interventions will be necessary to provide high quality and effective care for patients, and facilitate collaboration of health, social and third sector services
VLA 1.4 GHz Catalogs of the Abell 370 and Abell 2390 Cluster Fields
We present 1.4 GHz catalogs for the cluster fields Abell 370 and Abell 2390
observed with the Very Large Array. These are two of the deepest radio images
of cluster fields ever taken. The Abell 370 image covers an area of 40'x40'
with a synthesized beam of ~1.7" and a noise level of ~5.7 uJy near field
center. The Abell 2390 image covers an area of 34'x34' with a synthesized beam
of ~1.4" and a noise level of ~5.6 uJy near field center. We catalog 200
redshifts for the Abell 370 field. We construct differential number counts for
the central regions (radius < 16') of both clusters. We find that the faint
(S_1.4GHz < 3 mJy) counts of Abell 370 are roughly consistent with the highest
blank field number counts, while the faint number counts of Abell 2390 are
roughly consistent with the lowest blank field number counts. Our analyses
indicate that the number counts are primarily from field radio galaxies. We
suggest that the disagreement of our counts can be largely attributed to cosmic

Microbial ecology of coral-dominated reefs in the Federated States of Micronesia

Aquatic Microbial Ecology, 86, (2021): 115–136, https://doi.org/10.3354/ame01961.Microorganisms are central to the functioning of coral reef ecosystems, but their dynamics are unstudied on most reefs. We examined the microbial ecology of shallow reefs within the Federated States of Micronesia. We surveyed 20 reefs surrounding 7 islands and atolls (Yap, Woleai, Olimarao, Kosrae, Kapingamarangi, Nukuoro, and Pohnpei), spanning 875053 km2. On the reefs, we found consistently higher coral coverage (mean ± SD = 36.9 ± 22.2%; max 77%) compared to macroalgae coverage (15.2 ± 15.5%; max 58%), and low abundances of fish. Reef waters had low inorganic nutrient concentrations and were dominated by Synechococcus, Prochlorococcus, and SAR11 bacteria. The richness of bacterial and archaeal communities was significantly related to interactions between island/atoll and depth. High coral coverage on reefs was linked to higher relative abundances of Flavobacteriaceae, Leisingera, Owenweeksia, Vibrio, and the OM27 clade, as well as other heterotrophic bacterial groups, consistent with communities residing in waters near corals and within coral mucus. Microbial community structure at reef depth was significantly correlated with geographic distance, suggesting that island biogeography influences reef microbial communities. Reefs at Kosrae Island, which hosted the highest coral abundance and diversity, were unique compared to other locations; seawater from Kosrae reefs had the lowest organic carbon (59.8-67.9 µM), highest organic nitrogen (4.5-5.3 µM), and harbored consistent microbial communities (>85% similar), which were dominated by heterotrophic cells. This study suggests that the reef-water microbial ecology on Micronesian reefs is influenced by the density and diversity of corals as well as other biogeographical features.Samples were collected under Federated States of Micronesia collection permits FM12-11-03S and FM12-11-05S. Patients' views and experiences of live supervised tele-exercise classes following bariatric surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic: The BARI-LIFESTYLE qualitative study.
The BARI-LIFESTYLE trial is a randomized controlled trial evaluating the efficacy of a post-surgery nutritional and behavioural tele-counselling, and supervised exercise programme to maximize the health benefits of bariatric surgery. Due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the in-person supervised exercise component had to be converted to remote tele-exercise. However, patients' acceptability of this method of exercise provision is unknown. Between 3 and 6 months following bariatric surgery, 13 adults participated in weekly, structured, 60-min supervised exercise classes delivered via Zoom by a trained exercise therapist. A total of 12 participants (n = 8 female), with a mean age of 46.3 (range 33-63) years, who had undergone either sleeve gastrectomy (n = 8) or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (n = 4) surgery, participated in one-to-one semi-structured interviews following the tele-exercise classes. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. Participants described how the tele-exercise classes helped them to cope with the changes to their lives brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants found the tele-exercise schedule, content and intensity to be acceptable, and were satisfied with the privacy, security and safety of the technology and classes. Professional supervision and guidance from an exercise therapist were described as central to the tele-exercise provision. Importantly, participation in the tele-exercise provided physical, emotional and social benefits. Few participants reported barriers to participation. Overall, the tele-exercise classes were deemed acceptable and compared favourably to in-person exercise classes
The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE): Mission Description and Initial On-orbit Performance
The all sky surveys done by the Palomar Observatory Schmidt, the European
Southern Observatory Schmidt, and the United Kingdom Schmidt, the InfraRed
Astronomical Satellite and the 2 Micron All Sky Survey have proven to be
extremely useful tools for astronomy with value that lasts for decades. The
Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer is mapping the whole sky following its
launch on 14 December 2009. WISE began surveying the sky on 14 Jan 2010 and
completed its first full coverage of the sky on July 17. The survey will
continue to cover the sky a second time until the cryogen is exhausted
(anticipated in November 2010). WISE is achieving 5 sigma point source
sensitivities better than 0.08, 0.11, 1 and 6 mJy in unconfused regions on the
ecliptic in bands centered at wavelengths of 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 microns.
Sensitivity improves toward the ecliptic poles due to denser coverage and lower
zodiacal background. The angular resolution is 6.1, 6.4, 6.5 and 12.0
arc-seconds at 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 microns, and the astrometric precision for

Rare copy number variations are associated with poorer cognition in schizophrenia
Background
Cognitive impairment in schizophrenia is a major contributor to poor outcomes yet its causes are poorly understood. Some rare copy number variants (CNVs) are associated with schizophrenia risk and impact cognition in healthy populations but their contribution to cognitive impairment in schizophrenia has not been investigated. We examined the effect of 12 schizophrenia CNVs on cognition in those with schizophrenia.
Methods
General cognitive ability was measured using the MATRICS composite z-score in 875 schizophrenia cases, and in a replication sample of 519 schizophrenia cases using WAIS Full-Scale IQ. Using linear regression we tested for association between cognition and schizophrenia CNV status, covarying for age and sex. In addition, we tested whether CNVs hitting genes in schizophrenia enriched gene sets (loss of function intolerant or synaptic gene sets) were associated with cognitive impairment.
Results
23 schizophrenia CNV carriers were identified. Schizophrenia CNV carriers had lower general cognitive ability than non-schizophrenia CNV carriers in discovery (β=-0.66, 95%CI = -1.31 to -0.01) and replication samples (β=-0.91, 95%CI =-1.71 to -0.11), and after meta-analysis (β=-0.76, 95%CI=-1.26 to -0.25, p=0.003). CNVs hitting loss of function intolerant genes were associated with lower cognition (β= -0.15, 95%CI=-0.29 to -0.001, p=0.048).
Conclusions
In those with schizophrenia, cognitive ability in schizophrenia CNV carriers is 0.5-1.0 standard deviations below non-CNV carriers, which may have implications for clinical assessment and management. We also demonstrate that rare CNVs hitting genes intolerant to loss of function variation lead to more severe cognitive impairment, above and beyond the effect of known schizophrenia CNVs
Gangliosides Block Aggregatibacter Actinomycetemcomitans Leukotoxin (LtxA)-Mediated Hemolysis
Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is an oral pathogen and etiologic agent of localized aggressive periodontitis. The bacterium is also a cardiovascular pathogen causing infective endocarditis. A. actinomycetemcomitans produces leukotoxin (LtxA), an important virulence factor that targets white blood cells (WBCs) and plays a role in immune evasion during disease. The functional receptor for LtxA on WBCs is leukocyte function antigen-1 (LFA-1), a β-2 integrin that is modified with N-linked carbohydrates. Interaction between toxin and receptor leads to cell death. We recently discovered that LtxA can also lyse red blood cells (RBCs) and hemolysis may be important for pathogenesis of A. actinomycetemcomitans. In this study, we further investigated how LtxA might recognize and lyse RBCs. We found that, in contrast to a related toxin, E. coli α-hemolysin, LtxA does not recognize glycophorin on RBCs. However, gangliosides were able to completely block LtxA-mediated hemolysis. Furthermore, LtxA did not show a preference for any individual ganglioside. LtxA also bound to ganglioside-rich C6 rat glioma cells, but did not kill them. Interaction between LtxA and C6 cells could be blocked by gangliosides with no apparent specificity. Gangliosides were only partially effective at preventing LtxA-mediated cytotoxicity of WBCs, and the effect was only observed when a high ratio of ganglioside:LtxA was used over a short incubation period. Based on the results presented here, we suggest that because of the similarity between N-linked sugars on LFA-1 and the structures of gangliosides, LtxA may have acquired the ability to lyse RBCs
