Making and making use of a baseline: botanical research and the legacy of Chico Mendes
The vision and charisma of Chico Mendes made Acre a destination for many people fascinated and inspired by the great socio-environmental experiments he was proposing; his murder only increased that interest. The extractivist movement engendered by Chico Mendes, with a potentially strong role for basic research, was the primary reason that The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) committed scientists and resources in order to study the flora of Acre and Southwestern (SW) Amazonia. At the outset of our collaborative agreement with the Universidade Federal do Acre (UFAC)[Federal University of Acre], Acre was botanically one of the least-known parts of Amazonia. Thirty years later, it has come to be one of the best-known parts, due in great part to the First Catalogue of the Flora of Acre, Brazil, which contributed with the first ten percent of the checklist to the flora of all Brazil. More importantly, we were able to add original data to arguments for the making of new protected areas in Acre. In these process, we established Acre as a point of reference for botanical knowledge about Southwestern Amazonia. The NYBG/UFAC partnership was an early participant in the MAP (Madre de Dios-Acre-Pando) consortium and helped designate priorities portions of SW Amazonia to conservation. Our botanical research in this region has emphasized potential applications to resource management. Most recently, our efforts have focused on reforming forest management and monitoring by continuing to build on our baseline of knowledge of the flora, proposing better protocols for sampling and collection in forest inventories, offering training courses to the certification of new generations of “master woodsmen”, and developing tools and resources for tree identification. Our capacity-building efforts now focus primarily on communities situated in or close by protected areas, treating them as participants and collaborators in forest inventory and monitoring. Making good use of traditional knowledge and focusing on forest communities as full participants and partners in projects devoted to inventory, management, monitoring and conservation of forests throughout Amazonia, we are doing our small part to honor the legacy of Chico Mendes
Africanidades: novos caminhos, primeiros passos
A variety of statistical models of probability has been developed by financial institutions in the last decades. However, most times these models are specific to analyzing the credit of companies. Differently from the corporation segment, the segment of individuals is very homogeneous from a financial point of view. In other words, this segment has few financial indicators to be analyzed. The main differences among bank customers in the segment of individuals have to do with their behavior. The functionality of the multivariate statistical models applied to credit management for individuals in Brazil is not yet fully known. This article proposes, thus, to fulfill an existing gap in the Brazilian academic environment regarding management models and credit granting for individuals. The findings of this research indicate that the multivariate models can be efficient tools in managing bank credit for individuals in Brazil. New Physics and Evidence for a Complex CKM
We carefully analyse the present experimental evidence for a complex CKM
matrix, even allowing for New Physics contributions to ,

ole played by the angle in both providing irrefutable evidence for a
complex CKM matrix and placing constraints on the size of NP contributions. It
is shown that even if one allows for New Physics a real CKM matrix is excluded
at a 99.92% C.L., and the probability for the phase to be in the

Photoaging skin therapy with PRP and ADSC: a comparative study
Background: Stem cells from adipose tissue (ADSCs) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) are innovative modalities that arise due to their regenerative potential. Objective: The aim of this study was to characterize possible histological changes induced by PRP and ADSC therapies in photoaged skin. Methods: A prospective randomized study involving 20 healthy individuals, showing skin aging. They underwent two therapeutic protocols (protocol 1: PRP; protocol 2: ADSCs). Biopsies were obtained before and after treatment (4 months). Results: PRP protocol showed unwanted changes in the reticular dermis, mainly due to the deposition of a horizontal layer of collagen (fibrosis) and elastic fibers tightly linked. Structural analyses revealed infiltration of mononuclear cells and depot of fibrotic material in the reticular dermis. The ADSC protocol leads to neoelastogenesis with increase of tropoelastin and fibrillin. There was an improvement of solar elastosis inducing an increment of macrophage polarization and matrix proteinases. These last effects are probably related to the increase of elastinolysis and the remodeling of the dermis. Conclusions: The PRP promoted an inflammatory process with an increase of reticular dermis thickness with a fibrotic aspect. On the other hand, ADSC therapy is a promising modality with an important antiaging effect on photoaged human skin
Treatment of Auricular Deformity

University Researcher and Law Enforcement Collaboration : Lessons From a Study of Justice-Involved Persons With Suspected Mental Illness
In 2012, heads of local law enforcement agencies in Benton County, Oregon, contacted researchers at Oregon State University to discuss a problem: a sharp rise in the amount of contact between police and suspects displaying symptoms of mental illness. This initial contact led to an ongoing collaborative examination of the nature, causes, and consequences of the rise in police contacts. In this article, the authors describe this collaboration between researchers and law enforcement officials from the perspective of both parties, situating it within the context of mental illness in the American criminal justice system. The collaborators draw on firsthand experiences and prior collaborations to discuss the benefits of, challenges in, and recommendations for university-police research collaborations. While such collaborations may pose challenges (related to relationship definition, data collection and analysis, outputs, and relationship maintenance), the potential benefits—for researchers and law enforcement agencies—are substantial. This is an author's peer-reviewed final manuscript, as accepted by the publisher. Science CONOPS for Application of SPORT Mission Data to Study Large (~1000km) Ionospheric Plasma Depletions
The Scintillation Prediction Observations Research Task (SPORT) mission is a single 6U CubeSat space weather satellite planned for an October 2022 launch into an ISS-like orbit. The primary purpose of the SPORT mission is to determine the longitudinal effects on equatorial plasma bubble (EPB) growth resulting from the offset dipole magnetic field of the Earth. By combining field and plasma measurements from SPORT with other low-altitude (i.e., alt \u3c 1000 km) spacecraft, it is possible to investigate large-scale (\u3e 1000 km) EPB structures. The types of investigation made possible by measurements from SPORT and other contemporaneous missions include 1) dynamics of depleted magnetic flux tubes; 2) dynamics of field-aligned EPB expansion versus propagation speed; 3) EPB vertical extent; and 4) EPB temporal evolution. To support these investigation types, the respective modes of conjunctions are: 1) simultaneous intersection of a magnetic flux tube; 2) intersection of magnetic flux tube separated in time; 3) Simultaneous Latitude/Longitude position conjunction; and 4) Non-simultaneous latitude/longitude position conjunction. This paper will summarize the SPORT satellite and data used for Science CONOPS to accomplish these objectives
