Quantum eigenstate tomography with qubit tunneling spectroscopy

    Get PDF
Measurement of the energy eigenvalues (spectrum) of a multi-qubit system has recently become possible by qubit tunneling spectroscopy (QTS). In the standard QTS experiments, an incoherent probe qubit is strongly coupled to one of the qubits of the system in such a way that its incoherent tunneling rate provides information about the energy eigenvalues of the original (source) system. In this paper, we generalize QTS by coupling the probe qubit to many source qubits. We show that by properly choosing the couplings, one can perform projective measurements of the source system energy eigenstates in an arbitrary basis, thus performing quantum eigenstate tomography. As a practical example of a limited tomography, we apply our scheme to probe the eigenstates of a kink in a frustrated transverse Ising chain.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

Endoscopic endonasal management of recurrent petrous apex cholesterol granuloma.

Petrous apex cholesterol granulomas (PACG) are uncommon lesions. Recurrence following transcranial or endonasal approaches to aerate the cyst occurs in up to 60% of cases. We describe the technical nuances pertinent to the endonasal endoscopic management of a recurrent symptomatic PACG and review the literature. A 19-year-old woman presented with a recurrent right abducens nerve paresis. Four months prior, she underwent an endonasal transsphenoidal surgery (TSS) for drainage of a symptomatic PACG. Current imaging documented recurrence of the right PACG. Transsphenoidal and infrapetrous approaches were performed to obtain a wider bony opening along the petrous apex and drain the cyst. A Doyle splint was inserted into the cyst's cavity and extended out into the sphenoid, maintaining patency during the healing process. Three months after surgery, the splint was removed endoscopically, allowing visualization of a patent cylindrical communication between both aerated cavities. The patient remains symptom- and recurrence-free. Endoscopic endonasal surgery must be adapted to manage recurrent PACG. A TSS may not be sufficient. An infrapetrous approach with wider bony opening, extensive removal of the cyst's anterior wall, and use of a stent are indicated for the treatment of recurrent PACG and to prevent recurrences

This study was conducted in April-May 2013 in the inner marine waters of the eastern coast of Sumatra and the samples were analyzed in the Chemistry Laboratory of Marine Science Department of Fisheries and Marine Science Faculty of Riau University. This study was aimed to determine the chemical profile of oceanographic parameters in the coastal waters of the east coast of the Sumatra region into two parts, namely the southern and northern parts. Based on the analysis conducted on the chemical oceanographic parameters such as nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, ammonia, dissolved oxygen, and the degree of acidity. Concentration nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, and ammonia has a high concentration values with the approach of sampling stations towards the coast. While the dissolved oxygen and the degree of acidity of the sea towards the higher concentration value. The overall values of water quality parameters were as follow a). In the south section: nitrate 0.0102-0.0890 mg/l, nitrite 0.0675-0.4388 mg/l, phosphate 0.0022-0.0310 mg/l, ammonia 0.0403-0.6602 mg/l, DO 4-7 mg/l, pH 7.48-8.16. b). In the north section: nitrate 0.0025-0.0331 mg/l, nitrite 0.0738-0.1097 mg/l, phosphate 0.0044-0.0177 mg/l, ammonia 0.0333-0.9229 mg/l, DO 5-8 mg/l, pH 7.53-8.15. The physical parameters of the water was a factor in supporting this research

Statistical Arbitrage Mining for Display Advertising

We study and formulate arbitrage in display advertising. Real-Time Bidding (RTB) mimics stock spot exchanges and utilises computers to algorithmically buy display ads per impression via a real-time auction. Despite the new automation, the ad markets are still informationally inefficient due to the heavily fragmented marketplaces. Two display impressions with similar or identical effectiveness (e.g., measured by conversion or click-through rates for a targeted audience) may sell for quite different prices at different market segments or pricing schemes. In this paper, we propose a novel data mining paradigm called Statistical Arbitrage Mining (SAM) focusing on mining and exploiting price discrepancies between two pricing schemes. In essence, our SAMer is a meta-bidder that hedges advertisers' risk between CPA (cost per action)-based campaigns and CPM (cost per mille impressions)-based ad inventories; it statistically assesses the potential profit and cost for an incoming CPM bid request against a portfolio of CPA campaigns based on the estimated conversion rate, bid landscape and other statistics learned from historical data. In SAM, (i) functional optimisation is utilised to seek for optimal bidding to maximise the expected arbitrage net profit, and (ii) a portfolio-based risk management solution is leveraged to reallocate bid volume and budget across the set of campaigns to make a risk and return trade-off. We propose to jointly optimise both components in an EM fashion with high efficiency to help the meta-bidder successfully catch the transient statistical arbitrage opportunities in RTB. Both the offline experiments on a real-world large-scale dataset and online A/B tests on a commercial platform demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed solution in exploiting arbitrage in various model settings and market environments.Comment: In the proceedings of the 21st ACM SIGKDD international conference on Knowledge discovery and data mining (KDD 2015

This study was conducted in July 2014 with the aim to analyze the oil content in the water and sediment in the Suir River Estuary in Meranti Islands. This study was expected to serve as the initial information about the oil content in the water and sediments and as a baseline for future research assesing marine pollution in the waters of the River Suir Estuary in Meranti Islands. The method used was a survey method. The oil content in the water was highest at Station 3 (0,15 ppm) which was located in the outer region of the Suir estuary, and the highest in the sediment was at Station 2 (1473,66 ppm) which was located in the central region of the River Suir Estuary. The lowest oil content in the water and sediments, was forward at Station 1 (0,035 ppm and 818,08 ppm), which is part of the Suir estuary. Oil content in the water did not show real relationship with the oil content in the sediment (Y = 1147 - 1493x), the coefficient of determination R2 = 0,05 and correlation coefficient r = 0,23 indicating a negative relationship. Oil content in water was lower than the value of the quality standards set by State Ministry of the Environmental Affairs (2004), the oil content in the sediment was lower than the threshold value has been determined by the National Academy of Science (2001)

Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) from Fish Oil and Margarine as Bioactive Compound for Anti-inflammation in Occupational Dermatitis

Occupational dermatitis (OCD) is a skin inflammatory disease caused by allergens and irritant agents in the workplace. The disease is related to hypersensitivity reaction, which is correlated with an immunological mechanism (allergic contact dermatitis) and a nonimmunological mechanism (irritant contact dermatitis). Patients with atopic history (rhinitis allergy, asthma, and atopic dermatitis) have a higher risk of contracting OCD. Atopic individuals suffer from barrier skin damage that increases the risk of allergen and irritant penetration. Inflammatory reaction involves T-helper 1 (Th1), which produces cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interferon-γ (INF-γ), while T-helper 2 (Th2) produces interleukin (IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10). Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is an omega-3 substance from polyunsaturated free fatty acids (PUFAs)that has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect and the ability to decrease macrophage accumulation. In the inflammatory process, EPA inhibits IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α, which are mediated by the free fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs). The aim of this study was to determine the bioactivity compound of EPA for anti-inflammatory agents and its target, based on in silico screening. The bioinformatic tools based on reverse docking used in this study were the PubChem compound database, the protein target prediction database, PharmMapper, SwissTargetPrediction, molecular docking software PyRx 0.8, ligand docking, and binding site analysis using PyMOL software. Docking and binding site analysis showed that EPA was able to interact withFABPs, with the binding affinity of EPA with FABP 4 higher (–4.2 kcal/mol) than that of hydrocortisone with FABP 4 (–7.4 kcal/mol). EPA has the same binding site and relative bonding power as the FABPs; thus, it has potential as an alternative anti-inflammatory medicine in OCD. Keywords: occupational dermatitis, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), free fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs), reverse dockin

Marine pollution is a change in marine environment including estuaries, which can cause bad consequences for marine living resources, danger to human health and reduce the quality of sea water and it's function. This research aims to know the water quality of Batang Arau River and it's organic pollution level. This research was held on December 2016 until February 2017 by using survey method. The quality of Batang Arau River is categorized as under adverse conditions. Based on this observation, found many garbage which makes the value of dissolved oxygen are low (DO <5 mg/L) and it's not eligible for biota's life. The value of BOD in Batang Arau River ranged from 0.2-2.1 mg/L, the value of COD range from 12.8-53.3 mg/L and the value of TOM ranged from 12.20-22.12 mg/L. The result of ANOVA shows that value of the water quality in Batang Arau River are very different between stations (p<0.001)

    Get PDF
The removal of xylene vapors was studied in a biofilter packed with a new hybrid (scoria/compost) packing material at various inlet loads (IL) and empty bed residence times (EBRT) of 90, 60, and 40s. The best performance was observed for EBRT of 90s, where a removal efficiency of 98% was obtained under steady state condition for inlet xylene concentration of 1.34 g m(-3), while a maximum elimination capacity of 97.5 g m(-3) h(-1) was observed for IL of 199.5 g m(-3) h(-1). Carbon dioxide production rates and the microbial counts for xylene-degraders followed xylene elimination capacities. Overall look to the results of this study indicates that the scoria/compost mixture could be considered as a potential biofilter carrier, with low pressure drop (here <4 mm H2O), to treat air streams containing VOCs

Systemic Dissemination of Pneumocystis Carinii in a Patient with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

    Get PDF
Pneumocystis carinii is usually considered a respiratory tract pathogen; however, there are reported cases of limited and generalized dissemination of the organism from the lungs of immunocompromised patients. We present the autopsy findings of a 29-year-old male with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and recurrent Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia who developed abnormal liver function tests. The patient had received aerosolized pentamidine because of toxic reactions to other modes of therapy. The postmortem examination revealed Pneumocystis in the lungs, liver, spleen, kidney, myocardium, thymus, pancreas, thyroid gland, bilateral parathyroid and adrenal glands, gastrointestinal mucosa, perihilar and mesenteric lymph nodes, and bone marrow. A high index of suspicion, especially in patients treated with aerosolized pentamidine, may lead to an increased recognition of disseminated pneumocystosis. Dissemination of the infection may be due to failure of the aerosolized drug to achieve adequate blood levels. As AIDS patients survive longer because of the developing therapeutic arsenal, disseminated pneumocystosis may be encountered with increasing frequency in these immunocompromised patients

The ising antiferromagnet and max cut on random regular graphs

The Ising antiferromagnet is an important statistical physics model with close connections to the MAX CUT problem. Combining spatial mixing arguments with the method of moments and the interpolation method, we pinpoint the replica symmetry breaking phase transition predicted by physicists. Additionally, we rigorously establish upper bounds on the MAX CUT of random regular graphs predicted by Zdeborová and Boettcher [Journal of Statistical Mechanics 2010]. As an application we prove that the information-theoretic threshold of the disassortative stochastic block model on random regular graphs coincides with the Kesten-Stigum bound
