    Design hazard identification and the link to site experience

    The training, development and routes to charteredship of building design engineers have undergone a major transformation in recent years. Additionally, the duration and quality of site experience being gained by designers is reducing. While accident causation is often complex, previous research shows a potential link between design and construction accidents. The effectiveness of the UK’s Construction (Design and Management) (CDM) Regulations is being questioned, and designers regularly do not recognise the impact they can make on site safety. A newly developed hazard perception test was used to determine if students and design practitioners are able to identify hazards in designs and to establish if site experience impacts hazard identification. The results of the tests show an association between the ability to identify and mitigate hazards and possession of site experience. The results provide empirical evidence that supports previous anecdotal evidence. The results also question if the design engineers of today are suitably equipped to fulfil the designer’s responsibilities under the CDM Regulations

    Seismic Forces in Ancillary Components Supported on Piers and Wharves

    This paper presents a simple procedure to estimate seismic forces in ancillary components (secondary systems) supported on marine structures such as piers, wharves, and marine oil terminals (primary systems). Since many such marine structures can be idealized as single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems, this study uses a simple linear-elastic model with two DOF, one representing the marine structure and the other representing the ancillary component. This study shows that acceleration at the base of the secondary system is approximately equal to spectral acceleration at the fundamental period of the primary system. It also proposes a formula, which is an improvement over current ASCE 7-10 recommendations, to estimate acceleration amplification in the secondary system due to its flexibility when mass and period ratios of the secondary and primary systems are known. The procedure in this paper is strictly applicable to marine structures for which primarily a single mode contributes to seismic response

    Comparative Assessment of Soil-Structure Interaction Regulations of ASCE 7-16 and ASCE 7-10

    This paper evaluates the consequences of practicing soil structure interaction (SSI) regulations of ASCE 7-16 on seismic performance of building structures. The motivation for this research stems from the significant changes in the new SSI provisions of ASCE 7-16 compared to the previous 2010 edition. Generally, ASCE 7 considers SSI as a beneficial effect, and allows designer to reduce the design base shear. However, literature shows that this idea cannot properly capture the SSI effects on nonlinear systems. ASCE 7-16 is the first edition of ASCE 7 that considers the SSI effect on yielding systems. This study investigates the consequences of practicing the new provisions on a wide range of buildings with different dynamic characteristics on different soil types. Ductility demand of the structure forms the performance metric of this study, and the probability that practicing SSI provisions, in lieu of fixed-base provisions, increases the ductility demand of the structure is computed. The analyses are conducted within a probabilistic framework which considers the uncertainties in the ground motion and in the properties of the soil-structure system. It is concluded that, for structures with surface foundation on moderate to soft soils, SSI regulations of both ASCE 7-10 and ASCE 7-16 are fairly likely to result in a similar and larger structural responses than those obtained by practicing the fixed-base design regulations. However, for squat and ordinary stiff structures on soft soil or structures with embedded foundation on moderate to soft soils, the SSI provisions of ASCE 7-16 result in performance levels that are closer to those obtained by practicing the fixed-base regulations.     DESIGNING PORT INFRASTRUCTURE FOR SEA LEVEL CHANGE: A SURVEY OF U.S. ENGINEERS

    Seaports are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to their coastal location. With the potential threat of up to 2.5m in sea level rise by 2100, resilient port infrastructure is vital for the continued operation of ports. There are strong economic and social incentives for seaports to provide long-term resilience against climate conditions. For example, service disruptions can cost billions of dollars and impact the livelihoods of those who depend on the port. Engineers play a pivotal role in improving the resilience of ports, as they are responsible for designing port infrastructure that will be adequately prepared for future sea level change (SLC). However, incorporating SLC is a challenging task due to the uncertainty of SLC projections, the long service lives of port infrastructure, and the differing guidelines and recommendations for managing SLC. Through an online survey of 85 U.S. port and marine infrastructure engineers, this research explores the engineering community’s attitude and approach to planning for SLC for large-scale maritime infrastructure projects. Survey findings highlight the extent that projects incorporate SLC, the wide range of factors that drive the inclusion of SLC, and the numerous barriers that prevent engineers from incorporating SLC into design. This research emphasizes that traditional engineering practices may no longer be appropriate for dealing with climate change design variables and their associated uncertainties. Furthermore, results call for collaboration among engineers, port authorities, and policy makers to develop design standards and practical design methods for designing resilient port infrastructure

    The effects of variability in bank material properties on riverbank stability: Goodwin Creek, Mississippi

    Bank retreat is an important area of research within fluvial geomorphology and is a land management problem of global significance. The Yazoo River Basin in Mississippi is one example of a system which is experiencing excessive erosion and bank instability. The properties of bank materials are important in controlling the stability of stream banks and past studies have found that these properties are often variable spatially. Through an investigation of bank material properties on a stretch of Goodwin Creek in the Yazoo Basin, Mississippi, this study focuses on: i) how and why effective bank material properties vary through different scales; ii) how this variation impacts on the outputs from a bank stability model; and iii) how best to appropriately represent this variability within a bank stability model. The study demonstrates the importance that the variability of effective bank material properties has on bank stability: at both the micro-scale within a site, and at the meso-scale between sites in a reach. This variability was shown to have important implications for the usage of the Bank Stability and Toe Erosion Model (BSTEM), a deterministic bank stability model that currently uses a single value to describe each bank material property. As a result, a probabilistic representation of effective bank material strength parameters is recommended as a potential solution for any bank stability model that wishes to account for the important influence of the inherent variability of soil properties. © 2008 Elsevier B.V.     Fibrous roller-compacted concrete with recycled materials - Feasibility study

    This paper presents fundamental work done to enable fibre reinforcement of roller-compacted concrete (RCC). Procedures for mixing and casting two types of steel fibres in RCC were developed. Fresh properties, uniaxial compressive and bending behaviour were examined in a pilot study dealing with cement content, fibre type and dosage. It was found that different fibre types and dosages require different moisture contents. It is concluded that low cement content (less than 300 kg/m3) steel-fibre-reinforced roller-compacted concrete (SFR-RCC) mixes do not have sufficient paste and are prone to fibre agglomeration, hence SFR-RCC mixes richer in paste and at optimum moisture content are recommended. Mixes with cement content of 300 kg/m3 coped better with fibre reinforcement. Despite causing some loss in compressive strength, fibres help enhance the flexural performance and even SFR-RCC mixes with recycled masonry and concrete aggregates performed equally well as natural aggregate mixes. A fullscale trial has been conducted to confirm the findings.
