    The Role of Pragmatics in Solving the Winograd Schema Challenge

    Different aspects and approaches to commonsense reasoning have been investigated in order to provide solutions for the Winograd Schema Challenge (WSC). The vast complexities of natural language processing (parsing, assigning word sense, integrating context, pragmatics and world-knowledge, ...) give broad appeal to systems based on statistical analysis of corpora. However, solutions based purely on learning from corpora are not currently able to capture the semantics underlying the WSC - which was intended to provide problems whose solution requires knowledge and reasoning, rather than statistical analysis of superficial lexical features. In this paper we consider the WSC as a means for highlighting challenges in the field of commonsense reasoning more generally. We begin by discussing issues with current approaches to the WSC. Following this we outline some key challenges faced, in particular highlighting the importance of dealing with pragmatics. We then argue for an alternative approach which favours the use of knowledge bases where the deep semantics of the different interpretations of commonsense terms are formalised. Furthermore, we suggest using heuristic approaches based on pragmatics to determine appropriate configurations of both reasonable interpretations of terms and necessary assumptions about the world

    Modelling the Polysemy of Spatial Prepositions in Referring Expressions

    In previous work exploring how to automatically generate typicality measures for spatial prepositions in grounded settings, we considered a semantic model based on Prototype Theory and introduced a method for learning its parameters from data. However, though there is much to suggest that spatial prepositions exhibit polysemy, each term was treated as exhibiting a single sense. The ability for terms to represent distinct but related meanings is unexplored in the work on grounded semantics and referring expressions, where even homonymy is rarely considered. In this paper we address this problem by analysing the issue of reference using spatial language and examining how the polysemy exhibited by spatial prepositions can be incorporated into semantic models for situated dialogue. We support our approach on theoretical developments of Prototype Theory, which suggest that polysemy may be analysed in terms of radial categories, characterised by having several prototypicality centres. After providing a brief overview of polysemy in spatial language and a review of the related work, we define the Baseline Model and discuss how polysemy may be incorporated to improve it. We introduce a method of identifying polysemes based on `ideal meanings' and a modification of the `principled polysemy' framework. In order to compare polysemes and aid typicality judgements we then introduce a notion of `polyseme hierarchy'. Subsequently, we test the performance of the extended Polysemy Model by comparing it to the Baseline Model as well as a data-driven model of polysemy which we derive with a clustering algorithm. We conclude that our method for incorporating polysemy into the Baseline Model provides significant improvement. Finally, we analyse the properties and behaviour of the generated Polysemy Model, providing some insight into the improvement in performance, as well as justification for the given methods

    Defining Relations: a general incremental approach with spatial temporal case studies

    This paper aims to lay a foundation for a systematic study of mechanisms for construction of definitions within a formal theory, by investigating operators for incremental construction of definitions of new relations from an existing set of primitives and previously defined relations. To illustrate our method, we apply it to two of the best known relation sets studied in KRR: Allen's Interval Algebra and Region Connection Calculus. We also show that systematic exploration of definitional possibilities can yield interesting insights into relation sets that were originally defined in a more ad hoc way, and opens the possibility for discovering new vocabulary for extending or refining existing calculi or for developing completely new calculi

    Very special relativity as relativity of dark matter: the Elko connection

    In the very special relativity (VSR) proposal by Cohen and Glashow, it was pointed out that invariance under HOM(2) is both necessary and sufficient to explain the null result of the Michelson-Morely experiment. It is the quantum field theoretic demand of locality, or the requirement of P, T, CP, or CT invariance, that makes invariance under the Lorentz group a necessity. Originally it was conjectured that VSR operates at the Planck scale; we propose that the natural arena for VSR is at energies similar to the standard model, but in the dark sector. To this end we provide an ab initio spinor representation invariant under the SIM(2) avatar of VSR and construct a mass dimension one fermionic quantum field of spin one half. This field turns out to be a very close sibling of Elko and it exhibits the same striking property of intrinsic darkness with respect to the standard model fields. In the new construct, the tension between Elko and Lorentz symmetries is fully resolved. We thus entertain the possibility that the symmetries underlying the standard model matter and gauge fields are those of Lorentz, while the event space underlying the dark matter and the dark gauge fields supports the algebraic structure underlying VSR.Comment: 19 pages.     The role of family in the intergenerational transmission of collective action

The final version is available from the publisher via the DOI in this recordThe present research demonstrates intergenerational influences on collective action participation, whereby parents’ past and current participation in collective action (descriptive family norms) shape their children’s participation in conventional and radical collective action via injunctive family norms (perception that parents value such participation). Two unique data sets were used: dyads of activist parents and their adult children (Study 1, N = 100 dyads) and student activists who participated in a yearlong, three-wave longitudinal study (Study 2, Ns wave 1 = 1,221, Wave 2 = 960, and Wave 3 = 917). Parents’ past and current participation directly and indirectly predicted children’s protest participation in Study 1, while Study 2 showed a similar pattern longitudinally: Perceptions of parents’ participation (descriptive family norm) and approval (injunctive family norm) predicted change in collective action participation over time. Together, results highlight family environment as a critical setting for the intergenerational transmission of protest

    Long-time Low-latency Quantum Memory by Dynamical Decoupling

    Quantum memory is a central component for quantum information processing devices, and will be required to provide high-fidelity storage of arbitrary states, long storage times and small access latencies. Despite growing interest in applying physical-layer error-suppression strategies to boost fidelities, it has not previously been possible to meet such competing demands with a single approach. Here we use an experimentally validated theoretical framework to identify periodic repetition of a high-order dynamical decoupling sequence as a systematic strategy to meet these challenges. We provide analytic bounds-validated by numerical calculations-on the characteristics of the relevant control sequences and show that a "stroboscopic saturation" of coherence, or coherence plateau, can be engineered, even in the presence of experimental imperfection. This permits high-fidelity storage for times that can be exceptionally long, meaning that our device-independent results should prove instrumental in producing practically useful quantum technologies.Comment: abstract and authors list fixe

    Functional characterization and target discovery of glycoside hydrolases from the digestome of the lower termite Coptotermes gestroi

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Lignocellulosic materials have been moved towards the forefront of the biofuel industry as a sustainable resource. However, saccharification and the production of bioproducts derived from plant cell wall biomass are complex and lengthy processes. The understanding of termite gut biology and feeding strategies may improve the current state of biomass conversion technology and bioproduct production.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The study herein shows comprehensive functional characterization of crude body extracts from <it>Coptotermes gestroi </it>along with global proteomic analysis of the termite's digestome, targeting the identification of glycoside hydrolases and accessory proteins responsible for plant biomass conversion. The crude protein extract from <it>C. gestroi </it>was enzymatically efficient over a broad pH range on a series of natural polysaccharides, formed by glucose-, xylose-, mannan- and/or arabinose-containing polymers, linked by various types of glycosidic bonds, as well as ramification types. Our proteomic approach successfully identified a large number of relevant polypeptides in the <it>C. gestroi </it>digestome. A total of 55 different proteins were identified and classified into 29 CAZy families. Based on the total number of peptides identified, the majority of components found in the <it>C. gestroi </it>digestome were cellulose-degrading enzymes. Xylanolytic enzymes, mannan- hydrolytic enzymes, pectinases and starch-degrading and debranching enzymes were also identified. Our strategy enabled validation of liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry recognized proteins, by enzymatic functional assays and by following the degradation products of specific 8-amino-1,3,6-pyrenetrisulfonic acid labeled oligosaccharides through capillary zone electrophoresis.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Here we describe the first global study on the enzymatic repertoire involved in plant polysaccharide degradation by the lower termite <it>C. gestroi</it>. The biochemical characterization of whole body termite extracts evidenced their ability to cleave all types of glycosidic bonds present in plant polysaccharides. The comprehensive proteomic analysis, revealed a complete collection of hydrolytic enzymes including cellulases (GH1, GH3, GH5, GH7, GH9 and CBM 6), hemicellulases (GH2, GH10, GH11, GH16, GH43 and CBM 27) and pectinases (GH28 and GH29).</p

    Top quark forward-backward asymmetry in R-parity violating supersymmetry

    The interaction of bottom squark-mediated top quark pair production, occurring in the R-parity violating minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), is proposed as an explanation of the anomalously large ttˉt\bar{t} forward-backward asymmetry (FBA) observed at the Tevatron. We find that this model can give a good fit to top quark data, both the inclusive and invariant mass-dependent asymmetries, while remaining consistent (at the 2-σ\sigma level) with the total and differential production cross-sections. The scenario is challenged by strong constraints from atomic parity violation (APV), but we point out an extra diagram for the effective down quark-Z vertex, involving the same coupling constant as required for the FBA, which tends to weaken the APV constraint, and which can nullify it for reasonable values of the top squark masses and mixing angle. Large contributions to flavor-changing neutral currents can be avoided if only the third generation of sparticles is light.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures. v3: included LHC top production cross section data; model still consistent at 2 sigma leve

    CD69 is a TGF-β/1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 target gene in monocytes

    CD69 is a transmembrane lectin that can be expressed on most hematopoietic cells. In monocytes, it has been functionally linked to the 5-lipoxygenase pathway in which the leukotrienes, a class of highly potent inflammatory mediators, are produced. However, regarding CD69 gene expression and its regulatory mechanisms in monocytes, only scarce data are available. Here, we report that CD69 mRNA expression, analogous to that of 5-lipoxygenase, is induced by the physiologic stimuli transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1α,25(OH)2D3) in monocytic cells. Comparison with T- and B-cell lines showed that the effect was specific for monocytes. CD69 expression levels were increased in a concentration-dependent manner, and kinetic analysis revealed a rapid onset of mRNA expression, indicating that CD69 is a primary TGF-β/1α,25(OH)2D3 target gene. PCR analysis of different regions of the CD69 mRNA revealed that de novo transcription was initiated and proximal and distal parts were induced concomitantly. In common with 5-lipoxygenase, no activation of 0.7 kb or ~2.3 kb promoter fragments by TGF-β and 1α,25(OH)2D3 could be observed in transient reporter assays for CD69. Analysis of mRNA stability using a transcription inhibitor and a 3′UTR reporter construct showed that TGF-β and 1α,25(OH)2D3 do not influence CD69 mRNA stability. Functional knockdown of Smad3 clearly demonstrated that upregulation of CD69 mRNA, in contrast to 5-LO, depends on Smad3. Comparative studies with different inhibitors for mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) revealed that MAPK signalling is involved in CD69 gene regulation, whereas 5-lipoxygenase gene expression was only partly affected. Mechanistically, we found evidence that CD69 gene upregulation depends on TAK1-mediated p38 activation. In summary, our data indicate that CD69 gene expression, conforming with 5-lipoxygenase, is regulated monocyte-specifically by the physiologic stimuli TGF-β and 1α,25(OH)2D3 on mRNA level, although different mechanisms account for the upregulation of each gene

    La presente investigaci?n tiene como finalidad analizar las variaciones de la raz?n capital de trabajo respecto a las ventas (CT/V) y su impacto en la rentabilidad de las empresas que cotizan en la Bolsa de Valores de Lima, considerando indicadores macroecon?micos en periodos trimestrales de los a?os 2010-2019. Se elabor? una data panel que contiene los estados financieros trimestrales de las empresas que pertenecen a los sectores agrario, industrial, minera, diversas y servicios p?blicos; evaluando si existe patrones de comportamiento regular que permitan identificar estacionalidad en los promedios de las ventas y la raz?n CT/V. Para el estudio se utilizaron herramientas estad?sticas como: an?lisis de varianza, pruebas no param?tricas (Kruskal Wallis-Wilcoxon), regresi?n lineal y coeficiente de determinaci?n R2; que permitieron evaluar los resultados intrasectorial e intersectorialmente. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que la raz?n CT/V del total de las empresas no var?a significativamente en periodos trimestrales; pero cuando se analiza la interacci?n de empresas y sector, hay evidencia estad?stica para afirmar que existe estacionalidad en el sector Agrario. Asimismo, se demuestra que el capital de trabajo influye positiva y significativamente en los indicadores de rentabilidad ROA y ROE
