    In 2007 Cortés and Peña introduced a pivoting strategy for the Neville elimination of nonsingular sign regular matrices and called it two-determinant pivoting. Neville elimination has been very useful for obtaining theoretical and practical properties for totally positive (negative) matrices and other related types of matrices. A real matrix is said to be almost strictly sign regular if all its nontrivial minors of the same order have the same strict sign. In this paper, some nice properties related with the application of Neville elimination with two-determinant pivoting strategy to almost strictly sign regular matrices are presented

    In this paper some properties of two-determinant pivoting for Neville elimination are presented. In particular, we consider a zero-increasing property and we show an optimal normwise growth factor. Comparisons with other pivoting strategies for Neville elimination and with Gaussian elimination with partial pivoting of almost strictly sign regular matrices are performed.     Anteriores trabajos del Departamento (HERRERA, 1978; HERRERA, 1979, y HERRERA(1979), 1980) han conseguido alcanzar un conocimiento general de la fauna de Ortópteros de Navarra; no obslante, nuevas prospecciones durante los años 1978 y 1979 permiten aumentar el área de distribucion de las especies encontradas e incluso añadir algunas nuevas especies para Navarra. En el presente trabajo se da además la distribución hasta ahora conocida para España peninsular e insular. Se ha seguido preferentemente la sistemática de HARZ, 1969, y HARZ 1975. Los ejemplares se conservan en el Museo de Zoología de la Universidad de Navarra. Se da una "Lista de localidades" con altitudes y coordenadas U.T.M. correspondientes

    Critical velocity in kink-defect interaction models: rigorous results

    In this work we study a model of interaction of kinks of the sine-Gordon equation with a weak defect. We obtain rigorous results concerning the so-called critical velocity derived in [7] by a geometric approach. More specifically, we prove that a heteroclinic orbit in the energy level 0 of a 2-dof Hamiltonian is destroyed giving rise to heteroclinic connections between certain elements (at infinity) for exponentially small (in e) energy levels.     Extreme value and cluster analysis of European daily temperature series

    Time series of daily mean temperature obtained from the European Climate Assessment data set is analyzed with respect to their extremal properties. A time-series clustering approach which combines Bayesian methodology, extreme value theory and classification techniques is adopted for the analysis of the regional variability of temperature extremes. The daily mean temperature records are clustered on the basis of their corresponding predictive distributions for 25-, 50- and 100-year return values. The results of the cluster analysis showa clear distinction between the highest altitude stations, for which the return values are lowest, and the remaining stations. Furthermore, a clear distinction is also found between the northernmost stations in Scandinavia and the stations in central and southern Europe. This spatial structure of the return period distributions for 25-, 50- and 100-years seems to be consistent with projected changes in the variability of temperature extremes over Europe pointing to a different behavior in central Europe than in northern Europe and the Mediterranean area, possibly related to the effect of soil moisture and land-atmosphere coupling.‘Acções Integradas Luso-Espanholas’ under the grants E-83/09 and HP2008- 008

    Preparation of gellan-cholesterol nanohydrogels embedding baicalin and evaluation of their wound healing activity

    [EN] In the present work, the preparation, characterization and therapeutic potential of baicalin-loaded nanohydrogels are reported. The nanohydrogels were prepared by sonicating (S nanohydrogel) or autoclaving (A nanohydrogel) a dispersion of cholesterol-derivatized gellan in phosphate buffer. The nanohydrogel obtained by autoclave treatment showed the most promising results: smaller particles ( similar to 362 nm vs. similar to 530 nm), higher homogeneity (polydispersity index = similar to 0.24 vs. similar to 0.47), and lower viscosity than those obtained by sonication. In vitro studies demonstrated the ability of the nanohydrogels to favour the deposition of baicalin in the epidermis. A high biocompatibility was found for baicalin-loaded nanohydrogels, along with a great ability to counteract the toxic effect induced by hydrogen peroxide in cells, as the nanohydrogels re-established the normal conditions (similar to 100% viability).     Los gasterópodos terrestres del Cuaternario Superior de Gran Canaria (Islas Canarias)- Land gastropods of the Upper Quaternary in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands)

    Hemos estudiado la estratigrafía, cronología y paleontología de ocho depósitos sedimentarios (siete paleodunas y un derrubio de ladera) del Pleistoceno Superior de la isla de Gran Canaria (Islas Canarias). Las paleodunas se caracterizan por una alternancia de dunas y paleosuelos, que varía entre un ciclo en la Playa de Jinámar, y once en el Lazareto (Gando). La cronología de estos depósitos, obtenida por racemización de aminoácidos sobre ejemplares del género Theba y calibrada con 14C, muestra una edad entre 44,4 Ka a 22,2 Ka. La aminoestratigrafía ha permitido asignar estos depósitos a cuatro aminozonas (AM2 a AM5) de las registradas por Ortiz et al. (2006). Las asociaciones fósiles de gasterópodos terrestres están representadas por 20 especies pertenecientes a 8 familias, con un grado de endemismo del 95%. Los cambios faunísticos detectados, con respecto a la actualidad, se refieren a la extinción del 25 % de las especies del Pleistoceno Superior, y a la disminución de la extensión geográfica de algunas especies como Theba arinagae y T. aff. grasseti. - A stratigraphic, chronological and paleontological study of eight sedimentary deposits (seven palaeodunes and a colluvial slide) in the Upper Pleistocene of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) has been undertaken. The palaeodunes are characterized by dune-palaeosoil alternation, from an only cycle in Playa de Jinámar to eleven in Lazareto (Gando). The chronology of these deposits, obtained by amino acid racemisation and 14C datations in Theba genus samples, displays an age between 44,4 Ka and 22,2 Ka. The aminostratigraphy study appoints to these sediments belong to four amino zones (AM2 to AM5) reported by Ortiz et al. (2006). The land snail fossil assemblages are represented by 20 species belonging to eight families, with an endemic degree around 95%. The detected fossil fauna changes with regard to present fauna reveal an Upper Pleistocene species extinction at about 25% and geographic extension decreasing of some species as Theba arinagae and T. aff. grasset

    Unraveling the Landau's consistence criterion and the meaning of interpenetration in the "Two-Fluid" Model

    In this letter we show that it is possible to unravel both the physical origin of the Landau's consistence criterion and the specific and subtle meaning of interpenetration of the "two fluids" if one takes into account that in the hydrodynamic regime one needs a coarse-graining in time to bring the system into local equilibrium. That is, the fuzziness in time is relevant for the phenomenological Landau's consistency criterion and the meaning of interpenetration.     Modifying the magnetic response of magnetotactic bacteria: incorporation of Gd and Tb ions into the magnetosome structure

    Magnetotactic bacteria Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense MSR-1 biosynthesise chains of cube–octahedral magnetosomes, which are 40 nm magnetite high quality (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. The magnetic properties of these crystalline magnetite nanoparticles, which can be modified by the addition of other elements into the magnetosome structure (doping), are of prime interest in a plethora of applications, those related to cancer therapy being some of the most promising ones. Although previous studies have focused on transition metal elements, rare earth (RE) elements are very interesting as doping agents, both from a fundamental point of view (e.g. significant differences in ionic sizes) and for the potential applications, especially in biomedicine (e.g. magnetic resonance imaging and luminescence). In this work, we have investigated the impact of Gd and Tb on the magnetic properties of magnetosomes by using different complementary techniques. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy analyses have revealed that a small amount of RE ions, ∼3–4%, incorporate into the Fe3O4 structure as Gd3+ and Tb3+ ions. The experimental magnetic characterisation has shown a clear Verwey transition for the RE-doped bacteria, located at T ∼ 100 K, which is slightly below the one corresponding to the undoped ones (106 K). However, we report a decrease in the coercivity and remanence of the RE-doped bacteria. Simulations based on the Stoner–Wohlfarth model have allowed us to associate these changes in the magnetic response with a reduction of the magnetocrystalline (KC) and, especially, the uniaxial (Kuni) anisotropies below the Verwey transition. In this way, Kuni reaches a value of 23 and 26 kJ m−3 for the Gd- and Tb-doped bacteria, respectively, whilst a value of 37 kJ m−3 is obtained for the undoped bacteria.This work was supported in part by the Spanish MCIN/AEI under Projects MAT2017-83631-C3-R and PID2020-115704RB-C33.
