Estimulación del sistema mediado por interferón tipo I de lenguado senegalés (Solea senegalensis) en respuesta a infecciones por nodavirus
El lenguado senegalés es susceptible a la infección por el Virus de la Necrosis Nerviosa Viral (VNNV). Los betanodavirus se clasifican en cuatro genotipos, siendo los genotiposSJNNV, RGNNV y virus recombinantes RGNNV-SJNNV los que causan mortalidad en lenguado. En condiciones experimentales es el recombinante el que provoca mayor mortalidad. Las diferencias en la tasa de mortalidad pueden indicar variaciones en la interacción entre los distintos genotipos y el sistema inmune de lenguado. El sistema del interferón tipo I es un componente esencial de la respuesta inmune frente a infecciones virales, induciendo la expresión de genes que codifican proteínas antivíricas, tales como la Mx, la ISG15 y la PKR. El objetivo del presente trabajo ha sido cuantificar la transcripción de Mx, ISG15 y PKR en respuesta a infecciones por SJNNV, RGNNV y un recombinante RG-SJ.Universidad de Málaga. Strain balanced quantum posts
Quantum posts are assembled by epitaxial growth of closely spaced quantum dot
layers, modulating the composition of a semiconductor alloy, typically InGaAs.
In contrast with most self-assembled nanostructures, the height of quantum
posts can be controlled with nanometer precision, up to a maximum value limited
by the accumulated stress due to the lattice mismatch. Here we present a strain
compensation technique based on the controlled incorporation of phosphorous,
which substantially increases the maximum attainable quantum post height. The
luminescence from the resulting nanostructures presents giant linear

Video survey techniques are now commonly used to estimate animal abundance under the assumption that estimates relate to true abundance, a key property needed to make video a valid survey tool. Using the spiny lobster Palinurus elephas as our model organism, we evaluate the effectiveness of baited underwater video (BUV) for estimating abundance in areas with widely different population density. We test three BUV abundance metrics and compare the results with an independently obtained abundance index from trammel-net surveys (Trammel). Video metrics used to estimate relative abundance include a value for total number of individuals per recording (TotN), the traditional maximum number of fish observed in a single video frame (MaxN) and the recently suggested alternative, the average of the mean MaxN from 5-minute periods throughout the duration of the recording (MeanN). This is the first video study of a wild population to include an estimate for TotN. Comparison of TotN with the other two BUV relative abundance metrics demonstrates that both of the latter lack resolution at high population densities. In spite of this, the three BUV metrics tested, as well as the independent estimate Trammel, distinguished high density areas from low density areas. Thus they could all be used to identify areas of differing population density, but MaxN and MeanN would not be appropriate metrics for studies aimed at documenting increases in abundance, such as those conducted to assess marine protected area effectiveness, as they are prone to sampling saturation. We also demonstrate that time of first arrival (T1) is highly correlated with all of the abundance indices,suggesting T1 may be a potentially useful index of abundance. However, these relationships require further investigation as our data suggests T1 may also become sampling-saturated as lobster abundance increases.Publicad
El sistema del interferón tipo I protege a juveniles de lenguado senegalés (Solea senegalensis) frente a la infección por VHSV
El lenguado senegalés (Solea senegalensis) es susceptible a la infección por el Virus de la Septicemia Hemorrágica Viral (VHSV) bajo condiciones experimentales. El objetivo de este trabajo es determinar el papel del sistema del interferón tipo I de lenguado frente a las infecciones por VHSV.
Para llevar a cabo este objetivo se realizó un ensayo en el que el sistema del IFN I de juveniles de lenguado se estimuló con poli I:C. Trascurridas 24 h estos mismos animales se inocularon con una dosis letal de un aislado de VHSV patógeno para lenguado. Los controles utilizados fueron: (I) animales inoculados con VHSV sin previa estimulación con poli I:C, (II) animales inoculados sólo con medio L15 y (III) animales inoculados únicamente con poli I:C.Universidad de Málaga. Perception advances in outdoor vehicle detection for automatic cruise control
This paper describes a vehicle detection system based
on support vector machine (SVM) and monocular vision.
The final goal is to provide vehicle-to-vehicle time gap
for automatic cruise control (ACC) applications in the
framework of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). The
challenge is to use a single camera as input, in order to
achieve a low cost final system that meets the requirements
needed to undertake serial production in automotive industry.
The basic feature of the detected objects are first located in
the image using vision and then combined with a SVMbased classifier. An intelligent learning approach is proposed
in order to better deal with objects variability, illumination
conditions, partial occlusions and rotations. A large database
containing thousands of object examples extracted from real
road scenes has been created for learning purposes. The
classifier is trained using SVM in order to be able to classify
vehicles, including trucks. In addition, the vehicle detection
system described in this paper provides early detection of
passing cars and assigns lane to target vehicles. In the paper,
we present and discuss the results achieved up to date in real

Hypertension as a Risk Factor for Hip Fracture
Producción CientíficaArterial hypertension is a chronic disease in which prevalence
increases with age, as occurs in osteoporosis. It is
clinically silent and is only revealed in the form of complications,
an aspect that it also shares with osteoporosis.
Various alterations of calcium metabolism have been described
in association with hypertension; such alterations
can cause decreased bone mass, the principal determining
factor of fracture.1,2 Another important factor is the occurrence
of falls. Hypertensive patients may experience a
greater number of falls resulting from fainting associated
with diminished baroreflex sensitivity or hypotension secondary
to therapy.3,4 The purpose of this study was to
assess the effect of hypertension and its various therapeutic

Pulsational frequencies of the eclipsing delta-Scuti star HD 172189
The eclipsing delta-Scuti star HD 172189 is a probable member of the open
cluster IC 4756 and a promising candidate target for the CoRoT mission.
The detection of pulsation modes is the first step in the asteroseismological
study of the star. Further, the calculation of the orbital parameters of the
binary system allows us to make a dynamical determination of the mass of the
star, which works as an important constraint to test and calibrate the
asteroseismological models.
From a detailed frequency analysis of 210 hours of photometric data of HD
172189 obtained from the STEPHI XIII campaign we have identified six pulsation
frequencies with a confidence level of 99% and a seventh with a 65% confidence
level in the range between 100-300 uHz. In addiction, three eclipses were
observed during the campaign, allowing us to improve the determination of the

How is COVID-19 affecting patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder? A longitudinal study on the initial phase of the pandemic in a Spanish cohort
Background: Although the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on emotional health are evident, little is known about its impact on patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Methods: One hundred and twenty-seven patients with OCD who attended a specialist OCD Clinic in Barcelona, Spain, were assessed by phone from April 27 to May 25, 2020, during the early phase of the pandemic, using the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) and a structured interview that collected clinical and sociodemographic information. Results were compared with those for 237 healthy controls from the same geographic area who completed an online survey.
Results: Although 65.3% of the patients with OCD described a worsening of their symptoms, only 31.4% had Y-BOCS scores that increased >25%. The risk of getting infected by SARS-CoV2 was reported as a new obsession by 44.8%, but this only became the main obsessive concern in approximately 10% of the patients. Suicide-related thoughts were more frequent among the OCD cohort than among healthy controls. The presence of prepandemic depression, higher Y-BOCS scores, contamination/washing symptoms, and lower perceived social support all predicted a significantly increased risk of OCD worsening.
Conclusions: Most patients with OCD appear to be capable of coping with the emotional stress of the COVID-19 outbreak and its consequences during the initial phase of the pandemic. Nevertheless, the current crisis constitutes a risk factor for a significant worsening of symptoms and suicidal ideation. Action is needed to ensure effective and individualized follow-up care for patients with OCD in the COVID-19 era
