    Epidemic thresholds and human mobility

A comprehensive view of disease epidemics demands a deep understanding of the complex interplay between human behaviour and infectious diseases. Here, we propose a flexible modelling framework that brings conclusions about the influence of human mobility and disease transmission on early epidemic growth, with applicability in outbreak preparedness. We use random matrix theory to compute an epidemic threshold, equivalent to the basic reproduction number [Formula: see text], for a SIR metapopulation model. The model includes both systematic and random features of human mobility. Variations in disease transmission rates, mobility modes (i.e. commuting and migration), and connectivity strengths determine the threshold value and whether or not a disease may potentially establish in the population, as well as the local incidence distribution. The project leading to these results has received funding from “la Caixa” Foundation (ID 100010434), under Agreement HR-18-0036, and the program EU Horizon 2020, Grant Agreement “VEO” No. 874735.S

The profitability of value-added products in dairy farm diversification initiatives

A more open and competitive dairy market has encouraged certain dairy farms to adopt value-adding strategies in order to achieve a higher profitability, which may be important for farms’ survival. This paper investigated the role of some product characteristics in the profitability of value-added products in these farms. For this purpose, we used a unique database of 265 different products commercialized by 49 Spanish dairy farms that offers information on nine attributes of each product. Using hedonic models as a baseline, we examined the influence of these attributes on the margin per liter (ML) of the products. The results of the regression indicated that cheese and yogurt generated 0.688 and 1.518 € more of margin per liter than liquid milk. Similarly, we found a set of attributes that have a positive influence on ML, including possession of a certificate of protected designation of origin (PDO), the milk-type composition (proportion of sheep milk), a longer expiration period, and involvement in direct marketing strategies (DMS). However, other recognized attributes such as organic labeling, maturation period, size of the sales unit and returnable packaging did not have a significant influence on ML. Our findings also showed that firms producing more elaborated products as cheese and yogurt need a lower percentage of their production to cover the fixed costs associated to transformation and commercialization. Overall, our results revealed that the elaboration of value-added dairy products improves the profitability of dairy farms

The concept of designing a hybrid car between an aircraft and a ground vehicle is based on finding an effective solution to traffic congestion in major cities around the world, as this generates great controversy in mobility and developing them. This prototype should be able to fly in a short distance range without the need for a runway to take off or land , ie , vertical takeoff and landing . Also, you must be a car for personal transport whose circulation is permitted in the city like any other vehicle. The project is under the supervision of Pedro Meneses , Director of the thesis , together with Creatti Labs SA (Bogota - Colombia ) . Design parameters, which were intended to solve problems of traffic congestion and project ourselves as a society to a near future in which there would be these vehicles were developed.

Current scholars are showing that fiscal-financial system of the Austrias was shaping since ca. 1490. Important tasks like “headings”, bonds (juros) or the participation of a financial groups in loans or tax farming took part of the common reality of Castilians from this moment. In this hand, there was also some events that can be taken as precedents of the famous “bankruptcies” and, in short, these episodes of financial crises show that there was a precarious balance around the credit systems that nourished the real estate before the Habsburg rule. This article focuses on a suspension of libranzas ordered by Fernando el Católico in February of 1509. Unpublished sources coming mainly from the Archive of Simancas has been used in order to elaborate the study
