“The Skin I’m In” is a striking, engaging and well-argued podcast transcript that questions racial equality in today’s so-called “diverse” Canada. By referring to many contemporary scholars and activists, such as bell hooks, Desmond Cole, Afua Cooper, and others, the author exposes issues that black men face daily. Aside from the author's personal experience, the transcript contains news, interviews and popular culture references that many can relate to. It creates a big picture that, once again, reminds us of the question: “For how long will this kind of injustice prevail?

BACKGROUND: The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Group developed a questionnaire to assess sexual health in patients with cancer and cancer survivors. This study evaluates the psychometric properties of the questionnaire. METHODS: The 22-item EORTC sexual health questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-SH22) was administered with the EORTC QLQ-C30 to 444 patients with cancer. The hypothesised scale structure, reliability and validity were evaluated through standardised psychometric procedures. RESULTS: The cross-cultural field study showed that the majority of patients (94.7%) were able to complete the QLQ-SH22 in less than 20 min; 89% of the study participants did not need any help to fill in the questionnaire. Multi-item multi-trait scaling analysis confirmed the hypothesised scale structure with two multi-item scales (sexual satisfaction, sexual pain) and 11 single items (including five conditional items and four gender-specific items). The internal consistency yielded acceptable Cronbach's alpha coefficients (.90 for the sexual satisfaction scale, .80 for the sexual pain scale). The test-retest correlations (Pearson's r) ranged from .70 to .93 except for the scale communication with professionals (.67) and male body image (.69). The QLQ-SH22 discriminates well between subgroups of patients differing in terms of their performance and treatment status. CONCLUSION: The study supports the reliability, the content and construct validity of the QLQ-SH22. The newly developed questionnaire is clinically applicable to assess sexual health of patients with cancer at different treatment stages and during survivorship for clinical trials and for clinical practice

Introduction : Providing reliable information, early and appropriate oncosexology care require a better understanding of the patients' sexual health and care needs. Objective : To assess sexual health, information delivery and needs for sexology care of cancer patients before and during treatment. Methods : We performed 2 cross-sectional studies in cancer patients (1) in a radiotherapy department (study 1 : assessment before radiotherapy) and (2) in a digestive cancer department (study 2 : assessment during chemotherapy) of a regional university hospital. Patients filled out a self-administered questionnaire about their sexual health, Sexual Quality of Life questionnaire for Male or Female, Information they received and their needs for sexology care. Results : Studies samples was composed of 77 men and 123 women (study 1) and of 47 men and 31 women (study 2). Information was delivered to less than 1/2 patients, with women receiving less information than men before radiotherapy. In both studies, women had a decreased sexual quality of life score compared to men and up to half of patients stopped or declined in the frequency of their sexual activities. Conclusion : These results highlight the need for specific interventions for health care providers and patients, especially for women, who could benefit from oncosexological intervention like men do. Our data also suggest the need to assess sexual health in a prospective fashion from diagnosis to survivorship.

Doctor of PhilosophySchool of Family Studies and Human ServicesKaren S. Myers-BowmanPerceptions of family influence as a source of motivation to attend college were explored. More specifically, the purpose of this study was to investigate how, and in what ways, families shaped the pathway to higher education among 12 African American male collegians. Comparisons of these perceptions across family compositions and an extant model of family influence and college choice were also explored. The students in this study attended both public and private 4-year historically Black and predominantly White colleges situated throughout seven states in the Midwest and the South. A phenomenological qualitative research approach was employed to forward this study. Also, interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) techniques were applied to data gleaned from face-to-face interviews. Results of the study revealed two overarching themes of family influence and college choice for African American males: (1) deliberate family involvement and (2) contextual family influences. Eight subthemes illuminate the overarching theme deliberate family involvement: (1) emphasizing hard work, (2) aiding with pre-college paperwork, (3) offering messages about value of college, (4) supporting extra-curricular activities, (5) encouraging positive decision-making, (6) cultural indoctrination, (7) providing affirming words and praise, and (8) regular accessibility. Four subthemes buttress the overarching theme contextual family influence: (1) family educational choices, (2) family participation, (3) family representation and reactions, and (4) family stress. Implications for practice and recommendations for future research are also presented
