Modeling and control of a nuclear power plant using AI techiniques

In pressurized water reactor (PWR) nuclear power plants (NPPs) pressure control in the primary loops is fundamental for keeping the reactor in a safety condition and improve the generation process efficiency. The main component responsible for this task is the pressurizer. The pressurizer pressure control system (PPCS) utilizes heaters and spray valves to maintain the pressure within an operating band during steady state conditions, and limits the pressure changes during transient conditions. Relief and safety valves provide overpressure protection for the reactor coolant system (RCS) to ensure system integrity. Various protective reactor trips are generated if the system parameters exceed safe bounds. Historically, a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is used in PWRs to keep the pressure in the set point, during those operation conditions. The purpose of this study is to develop fuzzy controllers for the PWR pressurizer modeled by an artificial neural network (ANN) and compare their performance with conventional ones. Data from a 2785 MWth Westinghouse 3-loop PWR simulator was used to test both the conventional and the fuzzy controllers. The simulation results show that the fuzzy controllers have better performance compared with conventional ones

Estudo da vinculação e da empatia em adolescentes institucionalizados com acompanhamento psicológico no piac (plano integrado de apoio à comunidade)

Los autores estudiaron el nivel de empatía afectiva y cognitiva en 26 adolescentes institucionalizados en establecimientos que acogen jóvenes en situación de riesgo, y analizaron el tipo de vinculación y la percepción que tienen de sus relaciones tempranas con los padres. Este estudio tiene como objetivo comprender mejor a estos jóvenes para poner en práctica las estrategias de intervención que permitan mejorar el comportamiento social de los jóvenes en riesgo y que necesitan medidas especiales de educación. Se utilizaron para este estudio, tres instrumentos adaptados a la población adolescente portuguesa que son: la Escala de Empatía Básica (Jolliffe, 2005; versión en portugués: Noble Lima, Rijo y Matías, 2011), el Inventario de Apego de la Adolescencia-IPPA (Armsden y Greenberg, 1987; versión en portugués: Lucía Neves, 1995) y el dibujo de los Círculos Representativos de familia (S. Pipp, Shaver P., S. Jennings, S.Lamborn y KW Fischer, 1985) versión: MC Canavarro. Los resultados obtenidos se compararon con los obtenidos por Susana Anastasio (2013) en una población de 344 adolescentes. Se pudieron comparar los resultados con los obtenidos con la IPPA y con el dibujo de círculos representativos de familia en una población de 400 adolescentes. El test de Mann Whitney mostró que la población de IPPA difiere significativamente de la población normal en el apego a los padres en la subescala de Alienación a los compañeros, así como la percepción de los adolescentes al imaginar cómo fueron sus relaciones tempranas con sus padres.The authors studied the level of Affective and Cognitive Empathy in 26 adolescents that live in establishments that institucionalises adolescents at risk, and studied the type of attachment and the perception they have of their early relationships with parents. This study aims to better under- stand the adolescents to implement intervention strategies to improve the social behavior of adolescents at risk and in need of special educational measures. Three instruments adapted for the Portuguese adolescent population were utilized for this study: the Basic Empathy Scale (Jolliffe, 2005), The Adolescent Attachment Inventory-IPPA (Armsden & Greenberg, 1987) and Drawing Circles of Representatives family (S. Pipp, Shaver P., S. Jennings, S.Lamborn & KW Fischer, 1985). The results showed us that these adolescents of the PIAC had a lower level of empathy than that in a school population studied by Susana Anastácio (2013), in 344 adolescents. It was possible to compare the results with those obtained with the IPPA and with the Design of Circles Representatives of the Family in a normal population of 400 Adolescents. The Mann Whitney test showed that this population of the PIAC differs significantly from the normal population in Attachment to peers and in the subscale Alienation to peers, as well as in the perception that adolescents imagine how the early relationships with their parents was. These results are in agreement with the results obtained by Susana Anastácio (2013).Os autores estudaram o nível de Empatia Afetiva e Cognitiva em 26 adolescentes institucionalizados em estabelecimentos que acolhem jovens em risco, e ainda o tipo de vinculação e a perceção que eles têm das suas relações precoces com os pais. Este estudo visa conhecer melhor os jovens no sentido de implementar estratégias de intervenção que permitam melhorar o comportamento social de jovens em risco e necessitados de medidas educativas especiais. Foram utilizados para este estudo três instrumentos já aferidos para a população adolescente portuguesa e que são: a Escala de Empatia Básica (Jolliffe, 2005; versão portuguesa: Nobre Lima, Rijo & Matias, 2011) , O Inventário de Vinculação na Adolescência-IPPA ( Armsden & Greenberg, 1987; versão portuguesa: Lúcia Neves, 1995) e o Desenho de Círculos Representativos da Família de S. Pipp, P. Shaver, S. Jennings, S.Lamborn & K. W. Fischer, 1985) Versão: M.C. Canavarro. Os resultados obtidos e que foram comparados com os resultados obtidos por Susana Anastácio (2013), numa população de 344 adolescentes permitenos identificar nestes jovens do PIAC uma empatia em média mais baixa que na população escolar já estudada. Foi possível comparar os resultados obtidos nos adolescentes do PIAC com os resultados obtidos com o IPPA e com o Desenho dos Círculos Representativos da Família numa população de 400 Adolescentes em que o teste de Mann Whitney mostrou que esta população do PIAC difere significativamente da população normal na Vinculação aos amigos e na subescala de Alienação aos amigos do IPPA, tal como nos resultados obtidos por Susana Anastácio (2013). Quatérnios: indo além dos números complexos

The present work discusses, from a historical perspective, the existence of quatérnios, a numerical field broader than complex numbers. The work also presents concepts and a historical rescue of complex numbers, in addition to entering into the debate about a possible relevance of the study of quatérnios in mathematics courses. More specifically, the objectives of this work are: to synthesize bibliographic materials related to our object of study, to build an initial understanding of quatérnios, including mathematical aspects and applications, and to reflect on the role of quatérnios in the development of mathematical knowledge. Considering the listed objectives, our methodological procedures are anchored in a descriptive type of qualitative approach, through a literature review of the literature. As central results, we show that the creation of quatérnios expanded and consolidated mathematical abstraction, particularly in the field of Algebra, in addition to allowing applications in several areas such as computer graphics and quantum mechanics.O presente trabalho discute, sob uma perspectiva histórica, a existência dos quatérnios, um campo numérico mais amplo que os números complexos. O trabalho também apresenta conceitos e um resgate histórico dos números complexos, além de entrar no debate sobre uma possível relevância do estudo dos quatérnios em cursos de licenciatura em Matemática. Mais especificamente, são objetivos deste trabalho: sintetizar materiais bibliográficos relacionados ao nosso objeto de estudo, construir uma compreensão inicial sobre os quatérnios, incluindo aspectos matemáticos e aplicações e refletir sobre papel dos quatérnios no desenvolvimento do conhecimento matemático. Considerando os objetivos elencados, nossos procedimentos metodológicos estão ancorados em um tipo descritivo de abordagem qualitativa, por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica da literatura. Como resultados centrais, evidenciamos que a criação dos quatérnios ampliou e consolidou a abstração matemática, particularmente no campo da Álgebra, além de permitir aplicações em diversas áreas como computação gráfica e mecânica quântica

Spatiotemporal ecology of two Neotropical herbivorous mammals

On this study, we used camera traps in a Semi deciduous Seasonal Forest, northeast of Brazil, to estimate the frequencies of occurrence of two Neotropical herbivorous mammals: the spotted paca (Cuniculus paca) and the tapeti (Sylvilagus brasiliensis), analyzing their seasonal variations of spatial distribution. We also characterized the activity pattern of the species and their seasonal variation. The herbivorous frequencies of occurrence were constant during all the seasons. In general, both species were mostly active at night. However, between the rainy and dry season, we identified differences in spotted paca activity peaks. Here we present one of the first studies on the tapeti, whose ecology is understudied. Our results also show a general view of the spotted paca and tapeti behavior strategies to seasonal variations. Step-by-step Dissection Protocol of Apicotermitinae Worker (Blattaria: Isoptera)

Apicotermitinae are soldierless termites highly abundant in tropical forests. The taxonomy of this subfamily is based on characters of worker cast and winged forms when present. However, the procedures necessary to dissect termite workers to observe their external and internal morphological characteristics are not well detailed in any study. Here, we describe a step-by-step protocol for worker dissection of soldierless termite species. We suggest the use of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) for cleaning and visualization of the gizzard and enteric valve, and glycerin to remove tergites and sternites and describe in detail the dissection of the gizzard and enteric valve, and how visualize the insertion of Malpighian tubules

Integration of computerized operation support systems on a nuclear power plant environment

Automation of certain tasks in a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) control room is expected to result in reduced operators’ mental workload, which may induce other benefits such as enhanced situation awareness and improved system performance. The final goal should be higher level of operational safety. Thus, recent works are increasingly assessing automation. The LABIHS compact NPP simulator, though, still operates under strictly manual printed hard-copy procedures, despite of the fact that the simulator incorporates several advancements in design of digitalized Human–System Interfaces (HSIs). This work presents the development, implementation and integration of selected components to achieve increased level of computerized/automated operation of the LABIHS compact NPP simulator. Specifically, we discuss three components: (i) Automatic Plant Mode Detection, (ii) Automatic Alarm Filtering, and (iii) Computerized Procedures. Each one of these components has to be carefully designed/integrated so that one can avoid the undesired effects of some known implementations of automated systems on NPP, such as the reduction in the operator's system awareness, an increase in monitoring workload, and the degradation in manual skills, which could lead to automation-induced system failures

UM ESTUDO SOBRE O NÍVEL DE SATISFAÇÃO LABORAL DOS COLABORADORES DAS EMPRESAS DO SEGMENTO DE COSMÉTICO DA CIDADE DE QUIXADÁ-CE

O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o nível de satisfação dos colaboradores das empresas do segmento de cosmético localizada na cidade de Quixadá-CE, através de um estudo sobre as formas de trabalho em que os colaboradores são submetidos, e se passam por situações como: carga horária além da permitida por lei, salários não condizentes com o cargo exercido, péssimas condições de trabalho, dentre outras situações. No decorrer deste estudo foram abordados os assuntos acima citados que estão relacionados à administração de recursos humanos, trazendo-os esses assuntos para a realidade desses colaboradores locais, onde o município tem sua economia centrada na agricultura e comércio e atende além de suas fronteiras, pois, a cidade está localizada estrategicamente no centro da região que é bastante visitada por pessoas das cidades vizinhas com o objetivo mercantilista. Os dados foram coletados por meio de uma pesquisa de campo com questionários que identificaram como os fatores jornada de trabalho, remuneração e condições trabalho, influenciam na satisfação dos colaboradores no exercício de seu emprego, e ainda qual o nível de satisfação percebido sobre esses fatores
