Modular Acquisition and Stimulation System for Timestamp-Driven Neuroscience Experiments
Dedicated systems are fundamental for neuroscience experimental protocols
that require timing determinism and synchronous stimuli generation. We
developed a data acquisition and stimuli generator system for neuroscience
research, optimized for recording timestamps from up to 6 spiking neurons and
entirely specified in a high-level Hardware Description Language (HDL). Despite
the logic complexity penalty of synthesizing from such a language, it was
possible to implement our design in a low-cost small reconfigurable device.
Under a modular framework, we explored two different memory arbitration schemes
for our system, evaluating both their logic element usage and resilience to
input activity bursts. One of them was designed with a decoupled and latency
insensitive approach, allowing for easier code reuse, while the other adopted a
centralized scheme, constructed specifically for our application. The usage of
a high-level HDL allowed straightforward and stepwise code modifications to
transform one architecture into the other. The achieved modularity is very
useful for rapidly prototyping novel electronic instrumentation systems

The Hanle Effect in 1D, 2D and 3D
This paper addresses the problem of scattering line polarization and the
Hanle effect in one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D) and
three-dimensional (3D) media for the case of a two-level model atom without
lower-level polarization and assuming complete frequency redistribution. The
theoretical framework chosen for its formulation is the QED theory of Landi
Degl'Innocenti (1983), which specifies the excitation state of the atoms in
terms of the irreducible tensor components of the atomic density matrix. The
self-consistent values of these density-matrix elements is to be determined by
solving jointly the kinetic and radiative transfer equations for the Stokes
parameters. We show how to achieve this by generalizing to Non-LTE polarization
transfer the Jacobi-based ALI method of Olson et al. (1986) and the iterative
schemes based on Gauss-Seidel iteration of Trujillo Bueno and Fabiani Bendicho
(1995). These methods essentially maintain the simplicity of the
Lambda-iteration method, but their convergence rate is extremely high. Finally,
some 1D and 2D model calculations are presented that illustrate the effect of
horizontal atmospheric inhomogeneities on magnetic and non-magnetic resonance

Quantum networks reveal quantum nonlocality
The results of local measurements on some composite quantum systems cannot be
reproduced classically. This impossibility, known as quantum nonlocality,
represents a milestone in the foundations of quantum theory. Quantum
nonlocality is also a valuable resource for information processing tasks, e.g.
quantum communication, quantum key distribution, quantum state estimation, or
randomness extraction. Still, deciding if a quantum state is nonlocal remains a
challenging problem. Here we introduce a novel approach to this question: we
study the nonlocal properties of quantum states when distributed and measured
in networks. Using our framework, we show how any one-way entanglement
distillable state leads to nonlocal correlations. Then, we prove that
nonlocality is a non-additive resource, which can be activated. There exist
states, local at the single-copy level, that become nonlocal when taking
several copies of it. Our results imply that the nonlocality of quantum states

Dynamical tunneling in molecules: Quantum routes to energy flow
Dynamical tunneling, introduced in the molecular context, is more than two
decades old and refers to phenomena that are classically forbidden but allowed
by quantum mechanics. On the other hand the phenomenon of intramolecular
vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) has occupied a central place in the
field of chemical physics for a much longer period of time. Although the two
phenomena seem to be unrelated several studies indicate that dynamical
tunneling, in terms of its mechanism and timescales, can have important
implications for IVR. Examples include the observation of local mode doublets,
clustering of rotational energy levels, and extremely narrow vibrational
features in high resolution molecular spectra. Both the phenomena are strongly
influenced by the nature of the underlying classical phase space. This work
reviews the current state of understanding of dynamical tunneling from the
phase space perspective and the consequences for intramolecular vibrational

Testing sequential quantum measurements: how can maximal knowledge be extracted?
The extraction of information from a quantum system unavoidably implies a
modification of the measured system itself. It has been demonstrated recently
that partial measurements can be carried out in order to extract only a portion
of the information encoded in a quantum system, at the cost of inducing a
limited amount of disturbance. Here we analyze experimentally the dynamics of
sequential partial measurements carried out on a quantum system, focusing on
the trade-off between the maximal information extractable and the disturbance.
In particular we consider two different regimes of measurement, demonstrating
that, by exploiting an adaptive strategy, an optimal trade-off between the two
quantities can be found, as observed in a single measurement process. Such
experimental result, achieved for two sequential measurements, can be extended

Superpulsed low-level laser therapy protects skeletal muscle of mdx mice against damage, inflammation and morphological changes delaying dystrophy progression.
Aim: To evaluate the effects of preventive treatment with low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on progression of dystrophy in mdx mice. Methods: Ten animals were randomly divided into 2 experimental groups treated with superpulsed LLLT (904 nm, 15 mW, 700 Hz, 1 J) or placebo-LLLT at one point overlying the tibialis anterior muscle (bilaterally) 5 times per week for 14 weeks (from 6th to 20th week of age). Morphological changes, creatine kinase (CK) activity and mRNA gene expression were assessed in animals at 20th week of age. Results: Animals treated with LLLT showed very few morphological changes in skeletal muscle, with less atrophy and fibrosis than animals treated with placebo-LLLT. CK was significantly lower (p = 0.0203) in animals treated with LLLT (864.70 U.l−1, SEM 226.10) than placebo (1708.00 U.l−1, SEM 184.60). mRNA gene expression of inflammatory markers was significantly decreased by treatment with LLLT (p<0.05): TNF-α (placebo-control = 0.51 µg/µl [SEM 0.12], - LLLT = 0.048 µg/µl [SEM 0.01]), IL-1β (placebo-control = 2.292 µg/µl [SEM 0.74], - LLLT = 0.12 µg/µl [SEM 0.03]), IL-6 (placebo-control = 3.946 µg/µl [SEM 0.98], - LLLT = 0.854 µg/µl [SEM 0.33]), IL-10 (placebo-control = 1.116 µg/µl [SEM 0.22], - LLLT = 0.352 µg/µl [SEM 0.15]), and COX-2 (placebo-control = 4.984 µg/µl [SEM 1.18], LLLT = 1.470 µg/µl [SEM 0.73]). Conclusion: Irradiation of superpulsed LLLT on successive days five times per week for 14 weeks decreased morphological changes, skeletal muscle damage and inflammation in mdx mice. This indicates that LLLT has potential to decrease progression of Duchenne muscular dystrophy
Insights into enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli diversity in Bangladesh utilizing genomic epidemiology
Remineralization of initial carious lesions in deciduous enamel after application of dentifrices of different fluoride concentrations
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the remineralization potential of five dentifrices with different fluoride concentrations. Initial caries lesions were created in 72 cylindrical enamel blocks from deciduous teeth. The specimens were randomly distributed among six experimental groups corresponding to six experimental periods. Each of the six volunteers carried two deciduous enamel specimens fixed in an intraoral appliance for a period of 4 weeks. They brushed their teeth and the enamel blocks at least two times a day with dentifrices containing 0 ppm (period 1), 250 ppm (period 2), and 500 ppm fluoride (period 3), respectively. A second group of volunteers (n = 6) used dentifrices with a fluoride content of 0 ppm (period 4), 1,000 ppm (period 5), or 1,500 ppm (period 6). At the end of the respective period, the mineral content was determined by transversal microradiography (TMR). The use of dentifrices containing 500 ppm fluoride (38% MR), 1,000 ppm fluoride (42% MR), and 1,500 ppm fluoride (42% MR) resulted in a statistically significant higher mineral recovery compared to the control group (0 ppm fluoride). Mineral recovery was similar after use of dentifrices containing 0 and 250 ppm fluoride (24%; 25%). It is concluded that it is possible to remineralize initial carious lesions in deciduous enamel in a similar way as it has been described for enamel of permanent teeth
Transtorno autístico e doença celíaca : sem evidências de associação
Objective: To evaluate the possible association between celiac disease (CD) and/or gluten sensitivity (GS) and autism spectrum disorder
(ASD). Methods: Occurrences of CD were determined in a group of children and adolescents affected by ASD and, conversely, occurrences
of ASD were assessed in a group of biopsy-proven celiac patients. To detect the possible existence of GS, the levels of antigliadin antibodies in ASD patients were assessed and compared with the levels in a group of non-celiac children. Results: The prevalence of CD or GS in
ASD patients was not greater than in groups originating from the same geographical area. Similarly the prevalence of ASD was not greater
than in a group of biopsy-proven CD patients. Conclusion: No statistically demonstrable association was found between CD or GS and ASD.
Consequently, routine screening for CD or GS in all patients with ASD is, at this moment, neither justifed nor cost-effective. ___________________________________________________________________________________ RESUMOObjetivo: Avaliar a possível associação entre doença celíaca (DC) e/ou sensibilidade ao glúten (SG) e transtorno do espectro autista (TEA).
Métodos: Ocorrências de DC foram determinadas em um grupo de crianças e adolescentes afetados pelo TEA e a ocorrência d TEA foi
avaliada em um grupo de pacientes com DC comprovada por biópsia. Para detectar a possível existência de SG, foram determinados níveis
de anticorpos antigliadina em pacientes com TEA e comparados ao grupo de crianças sem a doença celíaca. Resultados: A prevalência de
DC ou SG não foi maior no grupo de pacientes com TEA quando comparada a grupos de indivíduos originários da mesma região geográfca.
De modo similar, a prevalência do TEA não foi maior ao ser comparada ao grupo de pacientes com DC. Conclusão: Não houve associação
estatisticamente demonstrável entre DC ou SG e TEA. Consequentemente, não são justifcáveis, no momento, exames de rotina para detecção de DC ou SG em pacientes com TEA
A web server for interactive and zoomable Chaos Game Representation images
Chaos Game Representation (CGR) is a generalized scale-independent Markov transition table, which is useful for the visualization and comparative study of genomic signature, or for the study of characteristic sequence motifs. However, in order to fully utilize the scale-independent properties of CGR, it should be accessible through scale-independent user interface instead of static images. Here we describe a web server and Perl library for generating zoomable CGR images utilizing Google Maps API, which is also easily searchable for specific motifs.
