This thesis is based upon research conducted in Maputo (Mozambique) among a group of young men that referred to the market of Xipamanine, as their “hang-out” place and as a place of sustenance, where they “got by”. The shared subjective experience of the anthropologist and her interlocutors and how this particular relationship contributes to the production of knowledge is evidenced throughout the text. This research aims to offer an “ethnographic portrait” of the everyday lives, dreams and contingencies of these young men. How their masculinities were strategically performed in attempting to subvert dominant discourses and to improve their social standing. In an effort to depart from victimizing discourses, which often explore young men’s marginalization, I projected the collaborative use of digital image-making technology as a means by which to reach a “shared understanding” of their lives. In the process, the young men re-inscribe the public vulnerability of their lives with a new kind of performance that is both heightened in masculinity and gender fluidity.

Random Modulo: A new processor cache design for real-time critical systems

    Get PDF
Cache memories have a huge impact on software's worst-case execution time (WCET). While enabling the seamless use of caches is key to provide the increasing levels of (guaranteed) performance required by automotive software, caches complicate timing analysis. In the context of Measurement-Based Probabilistic Timing Analysis (MBPTA) - a promising technique to ease timing analyis of complex hardware - we propose Random Modulo (RM), a new cache design that provides the probabilistic behavior required by MBPTA and with the following advantages over existing MBPTA-compliant cache designs: (i) an outstanding reduction in WCET estimates, (ii) lower latency and area overhead, and (iii) competitive average performance w.r.t conventional caches.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Expression of MMP-13 in Human Temporomandibular Joint Disc Derangement and Osteoarthritis

    Get PDF
Objective: MMP-13 performs digestion of collagen, which is a primary component of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) articular disc. This study evaluated the expression of MMP-13 in patients with anterior disc displacement with (ADDwR) and without reduction (ADDwoR), and in the presence of TMJ osteoarthrosis. Methods: Thirty-nine human temporomandibular joint disc samples were collected and divided in two ways: ADDwR (21 samples), ADDwoR (10 samples), and a control group (8 samples); and with osteoarthrosis (10 samples) and without osteoarthrosis (29 samples). Immunostaining of the TMJ discs was statistically compared between the groups. Results: There was no statistically significant difference for the area of MMP-13 immunostaining between the control group, ADDwR, and ADDwoR, nor between groups with and without osteoarthrosis. Conclusion: This study suggests MMP-13 is not significantly involved in collagen degradation in human TMJ disc displacement or osteoarthrosis

Erupted Complex Odontoma Mimicking a Mandibular Second Molar

    Get PDF
Complex odontoma (CO) is considered one of the most common odontogenic lesions, composed by a miscellaneous of dental tissue such as enamel, dentin, pulp and sometimes cementum. They may interfere with the eruption of an associated tooth, being more prevalent in the posterior mandible. CO has been rarely reported as erupted, being considered an intraosseous lesion. This is a case report of a 17-year-old male with a benign fibro-osseous lesion consistent with CO that was located at the left second molar region, above the crown of the impacted mandibular second molar tooth. The lesion was surgically removed, and the tooth had to be extracted, since there was no indication that it could erupt naturally or with orthodontic traction. The histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of CO and after 6 months complete bone formation was observed radiographically. An early diagnosis will provide a better treatment option, avoiding tooth extraction or a more damaging surgery

Sustainable Recovery of the Taquari River Riparian Forest: Public Ministry in the Defense of Collective Interests

    Get PDF
Riparian forest, an Area of Permanent Preservation, has suffered anthropic pressure for decades, which makes its recovery imperative. To preserve it, the Constitution has established the responsibility of the Public Prosecutor's Office to ensure diffuse environmental rights. Therefore, under the 1965 Forest Code, the Program for the Sustainable Development of Riparian Forest of Taquari River (PRSMCRT in the Portuguese acronym) was implemented in 14 marginal municipalities, whose areas are part of the Atlantic Forest Biome supported by methodology which was developed for it observing the regional characteristics and coordinated by the Public Ministry of the Rio Grande do Sul State (MPRS). This paper uses a qualitative approach with bibliographic research and analysis of the documents. It is exploratory in its objectives, descriptive about the methodology referred and purposeful in the end, because shows the results of the documentary analysis carried out by the Civil Inquiry that covered the Program and records the methodology developed by UNIVATES for the recovery the riparian area, which served as a basis for combining the required environmental protection, albeit in a smaller area than the legally foreseen in that time, with the constitutional right to property. Results show the recovery of riparian zones after the MPRS and counties work defending the collective rights. The other hand, researches need to be developed in the riparian zone of Taquari river to verify the efficient of the methodology which was created and applied in the PRSMCRT, especially about ecosystem services. Regardless of that, it is possible to replicate the global idea elsewhere

Interleukin-6 Expression in Disc Derangement of Human Temporomandibular Joint and Association with Osteoarthrosis

    Get PDF
The inflammatory process is a coordinated response that protects host after infection or trauma, involving several molecular reactions. Once the inflammation is closely linked to the process of destruction of the temporomandibular joint, this study aims to examine, by immunohistochemistry, the expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6), an important inflammatory marker, in temporomandibular articular discs of patients with anterior disc displacement with (ADDwR) and without reduction (ADDwoR) and its association with osteoarthrosis (OA). Thirty-eight (n = 38) articular discs were divided into two cutoffs: 1) analysis 1: 4 control (acute pathology), 17 ADDwR, 17 ADDwoR; and 2) analysis 2: without OA (n = 21) and with OA (n = 17). The area of immunostaining was compared statistically between groups (p \u3c 0.05). In the disc samples, no significant differences were observed between the groups ADDwR and ADDwoR, and with and without OA, in respect to the expression of IL-6 by immunohistochemical examination. Future studies should be conducted with a larger sample size, which could clarify the association of the inflammatory mediator IL-6 with temporomandibular joint dysfunction
