This paper explored the issues/acing student-athletes with learning disabilities and their academic counselors. Understanding the nature of learning disabilities and their effects can enhance the counselor's ability to address the complex needs of the student-athlete with a learning disability. The increasing numbers of college student-athletes who have diagnosed learning disabilities demands notice. This paper provided an explanation of the problems of diagnosis and treatment. Strontium isotope characterization of Karoo volcanic rocks
Karoo volcanics of both mafic and felsic composition cover large areas of southern Africa, and are characterized by considerable ranges in their initial 87Sr/86Sr (i.e. Ro) ratios. Mafic volcanics from the eastern and western continental margins show the greatest range in Ro ratios, i.e. Lebombo-Nuanetsi area: 0.7035-0.7134 and Etendeka: 0.7030-0.7135 respectively. In the Central Karoo area the mafic rocks show a smaller spread of ratios: 0.7046-0.7094
Reflectionless tunneling in ballistic normal-metal--superconductor junctions
We investigate the phenomenon of reflectionless tunneling in ballistic
normal-metal--superconductor (NS) structures, using a semiclassical formalism.
It is shown that applied magnetic field and superconducting phase difference
both impair the constructive interference leading to this effect, but in a
qualitatively different way. This is manifested both in the conductance and in
the shot noise properties of the system considered. Unlike diffusive systems,
the features of the conductance are sharp, and enable fine spatial control of
the current, as well as single channel manipulations. We discuss the
possibility of conducting experiments in ballistic semiconductor-superconductor
structures with smooth interfaces and some of the phenomena, specific to such
structures, that could be measured. A general criterion for the barrier at NS
interfaces, though large, to be effectively transparent to pair current is

A four‐component classification of uncertainties in biological invasions: implications for management
Although uncertainty is an integral part of any science, it raises doubts in public perception about scientific evidence, is exploited by denialists, and therefore potentially hinders the implementation of management actions. As a relatively young field of study, invasion science contains many uncertainties. This may explain why, despite international policies aimed at mitigating biological invasions, the implementation of national- and regional-scale measures to prevent or control alien species has done little to slow the increase in extent of invasions and the magnitude of impacts. Uncertainty is therefore a critical aspect of invasion science that should be addressed to enable the field to progress further. To improve how uncertainties in invasion science are captured and characterized, we propose a framework, which is also applicable to other applied research fields such as climate and conservation science, divided into four components: the need (1) to clearly circumscribe the phenomenon, (2) to measure and provide evidence for the phenomenon (i.e., confirmation), (3) to understand the mechanisms that cause the phenomenon, and (4) to understand the mechanisms through which the phenomenon results in consequences. We link these issues to three major types of uncertainty: linguistic, psychological, and epistemic. The application of this framework shows that the four components tend to be characterized by different types of uncertainty in invasion science.We explain how these uncertainties can be detrimental to the implementation of management measures and propose ways to reduce them. Since biological invasions are increasingly tightly embedded in complex socio-ecological systems, many problems associated with these uncertainties have convoluted solutions. They demand the consensus of many stakeholders to define and frame the dimensions of the phenomenon, and to decide on appropriate actions. While many of the uncertainties cannot be eliminated completely, we believe that using this framework to explicitly identify and communicate them will help to improve collaboration between researchers and managers, increase scientific, political, and public support for invasion research, and provide a stronger foundation for sustainable management strategies
Dissipative Electron Transport through Andreev Interferometers
We consider the conductance of an Andreev interferometer, i.e., a hybrid
structure where a dissipative current flows through a mesoscopic normal (N)
sample in contact with two superconducting (S) "mirrors". Giant conductance
oscillations are predicted if the superconducting phase difference is
varied. Conductance maxima appear when is on odd multiple of due
to a bunching at the Fermi energy of quasiparticle energy levels formed by
Andreev reflections at the N-S boundaries. For a ballistic normal sample the
oscillation amplitude is giant and proportional to the number of open
transverse modes. We estimate using both analytical and numerical methods how
scattering and mode mixing --- which tend to lift the level degeneracy at the
Fermi energy --- effect the giant oscillations. These are shown to survive in a
diffusive sample at temperatures much smaller than the Thouless temperature
provided there are potential barriers between the sample and the normal
electron reservoirs. Our results are in good agreement with previous work on
conductance oscillations of diffusive samples, which we propose can be
understood in terms of a Feynman path integral description of quasiparticle

Responses to the publication of the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM 5
The idea and practice of ‘diagnosis’ in psychiatry has always been controversial. Controversy came to a head in the period preceding and immediately after publication of the latest version of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, DSM-5. There was widespread international discussion and debate not only in scholarly journals but in mainstream and social media, and to the formation of International DSM Response Committee and an International Summit on Psychiatric Diagnosis. This article documents that process and outlines the issues that provoked, and continue to provoke most controversy, from the (admittedly personal) perspective of those involved. It ends with suggestions of alternatives to diagnosis, which avoid some of these problems and outlines how these are being taken forward. The next ten years are likely to see significant change
Phase coherent transport in hybrid superconducting structures: the case of d-wave superconductors
We examine the effect of d-wave symmetry on zero bias anomalies in
normal-superconducting tunnel junctions and phase-periodic conductances in
Andreev interferometers. In the presence of d-wave pairing, zero-bias anomalies
are suppressed compared with the s-wave case. For Andreev interferometers with
aligned islands, the phase-periodic conductance is insensistive to the nature
of the pairing, whereas for non-aligned islands, the nature of the zero-phase

The prevalence and incidence of mental ill-health in adults with autism and intellectual disabilities
The prevalence, and incidence, of mental ill-health in adults with intellectual disabilities and autism were compared with the whole population with intellectual disabilities, and with controls, matched individually for age, gender, ability-level, and Down syndrome. Although the adults with autism had a higher point prevalence of problem behaviours compared with the whole adult population with intellectual disabilities, compared with individually matched controls there was no difference in prevalence, or incidence of either problem behaviours or other mental ill-health. Adults with autism who had problem behaviours were less likely to recover over a two-year period than were their matched controls. Apparent differences in rates of mental ill-health are accounted for by factors other than autism, including Down syndrome and ability level
Worker remittances and the global preconditions of ‘smart development’
With the growing environmental crisis affecting our globe, ideas to weigh economic or social progress by the ‘energy input’ necessary to achieve it are increasingly gaining acceptance. This question is intriguing and is being dealt with by a growing number of studies, focusing on the environmental price of human progress. Even more intriguing, however, is the question of which factors of social organization contribute to a responsible use of the resources of our planet to achieve a given social result (‘smart development’). In this essay, we present the first systematic study on how migration – or rather, more concretely, received worker remittances per GDP – helps the nations of our globe to enjoy social and economic progress at a relatively small environmental price. We look at the effects of migration on the balance sheets of societal accounting, based on the ‘ecological price’ of the combined performance of democracy, economic growth, gender equality, human development, research and development, and social cohesion. Feminism in power, economic freedom, population density, the UNDP education index as well as the receipt of worker remittances all significantly contribute towards a ‘smart overall development’, while high military expenditures and a high world economic openness are a bottleneck for ‘smart overall development’
Towards improved cover glasses for photovoltaic devices
For the solar energy industry to increase its competitiveness there is a global drive to lower the cost of solar generated electricity. Photovoltaic (PV) module assembly is material-demanding and the cover glass constitutes a significant proportion of the cost. Currently, 3 mm thick glass is the predominant cover material for PV modules, accounting for 10-25% of the total cost. Here we review the state-of-the-art of cover glasses for PV modules and present our recent results for improvement of the glass. These improvements were demonstrated in terms of mechanical, chemical and optical properties by optimizing the glass composition, including addition of novel dopants, to produce cover glasses that can provide: (i) enhanced UV protection of polymeric PV module components, potentially increasing module service lifetimes; (ii) re-emission of a proportion of the absorbed UV photon energy as visible photons capable of being absorbed by the solar cells, thereby increasing PV module efficiencies; (iii) Successful laboratory-scale demonstration of proof-of-concept, with increases of 1-6% in Isc and 1-8% Ipm. Improvements in both chemical and crack resistance of the cover glass were also achieved through modest chemical reformulation, highlighting what may be achievable within existing manufacturing technology constraints
