Environmental Education 2.0: Toward a Theory of Ecologically Minded Teaching
Since the 1970s, the environmental education movement has been positioned as one of the primary means to cultivate the knowledge, values, dispositions, and behavior needed to preserve and protect the planet. Ample research suggests, however, that environmental education has failed to meet its goals, and that the state of the environment is worsening. There are organizations and frameworks that recognize the limits of traditional environmental education and that are pushing school reform broadly, and environmental education in particular, in new directions--what I call the Environmental Education 2.0 movement. In this study, I focus on one framework in particular, EcoJustice education. EcoJustice theorists posit that the ecological crises we face are rooted in culture and, more specifically, that Westernized culture has produced ecological crises through the pervasive homogenization, monetization, and privatization of existence. The result is alienation of community, the loss of forms of intergenerational wisdom that sustain healthy communities, and the erasure of cultural diversity into a global monoculture. The premise of Ecojustice education is that teachers and students need to understand these realities and then work to challenge them. Seven educators and I, all committed to preserving and protecting the environment, met regularly over the course of five months in a Critical Friends Group to learn together about Ecojustice and consider its implications for teaching. Analysis of these meeting transcripts and interviews with participants revealed the ways our Critical Friends Group served as a space--a commons--for reflection and reframing. So, too, was it a space in which an understanding of ecologically minded teaching emerged.Doctor of Philosoph
Second Set of Spaces
This document describes the Gloss infrastructure supporting implementation of
location-aware services. The document is in two parts. The first part describes
software architecture for the smart space. As described in D8, a local
architecture provides a framework for constructing Gloss applications, termed
assemblies, that run on individual physical nodes, whereas a global
architecture defines an overlay network for linking individual assemblies. The
second part outlines the hardware installation for local sensing. This
describes the first phase of the installation in Strathclyde University

Women’s responses to changes in U.S. preventive task force’s mammography screening guidelines: results of focus groups with ethnically diverse women
Background: The 2009 U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) changed mammography guidelines to recommend routine biennial screening starting at age 50. This study describes women’s awareness of, attitudes toward, and intention to comply with these new guidelines. Methods: Women ages 40–50 years old were recruited from the Boston area to participate in focus groups (k = 8; n = 77). Groups were segmented by race/ethnicity (Caucasian = 39%; African American = 35%; Latina = 26%), audio-taped, and transcribed. Thematic content analysis was used. Results: Participants were largely unaware of the revised guidelines and suspicious that it was a cost-savings measure by insurers and/or providers. Most did not intend to comply with the change, viewing screening as obligatory. Few felt prepared to participate in shared decision-making or advocate for their preferences with respect to screening. Conclusions: Communication about the rationale for mammography guideline changes has left many women unconvinced about potential disadvantages or limitations of screening. Since further guideline changes are likely to occur with advances in technology and science, it is important to help women become informed consumers of health information and active participants in shared decision-making with providers. Additional research is needed to determine the impact of the USPSTF change on women’s screening behaviors and on breast cancer outcomes
Deconvolution of ASCA X-ray data: II. Radial temperature and metallicity profiles for 106 galaxy clusters
In Paper-I we presented a methodology to recover the spatial variations of
properties of the intracluster gas from ASCA X-ray satellite observations of
galaxy clusters. We verified the correctness of this procedure by applying it
to simulated cluster datasets which we had subjected to the various
contaminants common in ASCA data. In this paper we present the results which we
obtain when we apply this method to real galaxy cluster observations. We
determine broad-band temperature and cooling-flow mass-deposition rates for the
106 clusters in our sample, and obtain temperature, abundance and emissivity
profiles (i.e. at least two annular bins) for 98 of these clusters. We find
that 90 percent of these temperature profiles are consistent with isothermality
at the 3-sigma confidence level. This conflicts with the prevalence of
steeply-declining cluster temperature profiles found by Markevitch et al.
(1998) from a sample of 30 clusters. In Paper-III (in preparation) we utilise
our temperature and emissivity profiles to determine radial hydrostatic-mass

Regulating financial conglomerates
We investigate the optimal regulation of financial conglomerates which combine a bank and a non-bank financial institution. The conglomerate’s risk-taking incentives depend upon the level of market discipline it faces, which in turn is determined by the conglomerate’s liability structure. We examine optimal capital requirements for stand-alone institutions, for integrated financial conglomerates, and for financial conglomerates that are structured as holding companies. For a given risk profile, integrated conglomerates have a lower probability of failure than either their stand-alone or decentralized equivalent. However, when risk profiles are endogenously selected, conglomeration may extend the reach of the deposit insurance safety net and hence provide incentives for increased risk-taking. As a result, integrated conglomerates may optimally attract higher capital requirements. In contrast, decentralised conglomerates are able to hold assets in the socially most efficient place. Their optimal capital requirements encourage this. Hence, the practice of “regulatory arbitrage”, or of transferring assets from one balance sheet to another, is welfare-increasing. We discuss the policy implications of our finding in the context not only of the present debate on the regulation of financial conglomerates but also in the light of existing US bank holding company regulation
Columnar and lamellar phases in attractive colloidal systems
In colloidal suspensions, the competition between attractive and repulsive
interactions gives rise to a rich and complex phenomenology. Here, we study the
equilibrium phase diagram of a model system using a DLVO interaction potential
by means of molecular dynamics simulations and a thermodynamical approach. As a
result, we find tubular and lamellar phases at low volume fraction. Such
phases, extremely relevant for designing new materials, may be not easily
observed in the experiments because of the long relaxation times and the

A Multiscale Approach to Blast Neurotrauma Modeling: Part I – Development of Novel Test Devices for in vivo and in vitro Blast Injury Models
The loading conditions used in some current in vivo and in vitro blast-induced neurotrauma models may not be representative of real-world blast conditions. To address these limitations, we developed a compressed-gas driven shock tube with different driven lengths that can generate Friedlander-type blasts. The shock tube can generate overpressures up to 650 kPa with durations between 0.3 and 1.1 ms using compressed helium driver gas, and peak overpressures up to 450 kPa with durations between 0.6 and 3 ms using compressed nitrogen. This device is used for short-duration blast overpressure loading for small animal in vivo injury models, and contrasts the more frequently used long duration/high impulse blast overpressures in the literature. We also developed a new apparatus that is used with the shock tube to recreate the in vivo intracranial overpressure response for loading in vitro culture preparations. The receiver device surrounds the culture with materials of similar impedance to facilitate the propagation of a single overpressure pulse through the tissue. This method prevents pressure waves reflecting off the tissue that can cause unrealistic deformation and injury. The receiver performance was characterized using the longest helium-driven shock tube, and produced in-fluid overpressures up to 1500 kPa at the location where a culture would be placed. This response was well correlated with the overpressure conditions from the shock tube (R2 = 0.97). Finite element models of the shock tube and receiver were developed and validated to better elucidate the mechanics of this methodology. A demonstration exposing a culture to the loading conditions created by this system suggest tissue strains less than 5% for all pressure levels simulated, which was well below functional deficit thresholds for strain rates less than 50 s−1. This novel system is not limited to a specific type of culture model and can be modified to reproduce more complex pressure pulses
Properties of galactic B[e] supergiants. IV. Hen3-298 and Hen3-303
We present the results of optical and near-IR spectroscopic and near-IR
photometric observations of the emission-line stars Hen3-298 and Hen3-303.
Strong emission in the H-alpha line is found in both objects. The presence of
Fe II and [O I] emission lines in the spectrum of Hen3-298 indicates that it is
a B[e] star. The double-peaked CO line profiles, found in the infrared spectrum
of Hen3-298, along with the optical line profiles suggest that the star is
surrounded by a rotating circumstellar disk. Both objects also show infrared
excesses, similar to those of B[e] stars. The radial velocities of the
absorption and emission lines as well as a high reddening level suggest that
the objects are located in the Norma spiral arm at a distance of 3-4.5 kpc. We
estimated a luminosity of log (L/L_sun) ~ 5.1 and a spectral type of no earlier
than B3 for Hen3-298. Hen3-303 seems to be a less luminous B-type object (log
(L/L_sun) ~ 4.3), located in the same spiral arm.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysic
Simulation of Claylike Colloids
We investigate properties of dense suspensions and sediments of small
spherical silt particles by means of a combined Molecular Dynamics (MD) and
Stochastic Rotation Dynamics (SRD) simulation. We include van der Waals and
effective electrostatic interactions between the colloidal particles, as well
as Brownian motion and hydrodynamic interactions which are calculated in the
SRD-part. We present the simulation technique and first results. We have
measured velocity distributions, diffusion coefficients, sedimentation
velocity, spatial correlation functions and we have explored the phase diagram
depending on the parameters of the potentials and on the volume fraction.Comment: 20 pages, 14 figure
