    Medical student’s perception on teaching-learning methods of pharmacology in a medical college

    Background: To know the Medical student’s perception on teaching and learning methods of pharmacology in a medical college attached to tertiary care hospital.Methods: This is a questionnaire based study conducted in a medical college. A pre-validated, pre-designed questionnaire containing 22 points was given to 5th semester students to know their perception on teaching and learning methods.Results: Analysis was done on 150 medical students of a tertiary care hospital. Among them, 80 % wanted the faculty members to make more utilization of Audio-Visual aids for effective learning. 78.67 % students wanted to include case based learning in the curriculum and 86.67% wanted more of the clinical pharmacology to be introduced. A 28% wanted MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions) to be included in the assessment of academic performance. A 13.33% felt that the ideal teaching method for learning pharmacology was didactic lectures. A 65% thought ideal teaching/learning media for pharmacology was the combination of LCD (Liquid Crystal display) projector and blackboard.Conclusions: The study revealed the ideal teaching and learning methods in pharmacology for the betterment of students

    A randomized split mouth clinical trial of the application of the desensitizer agents for tooth sensitivity

    Background: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) affects 3%-75% of the people and is one of the morbid tooth conditions. Hence in the present study we aim to examine the clinical effectiveness of 3 different desensitizing agents in decreasing pain of DH in time of 1 month.Methods: Fifty subjects with cervical DH in at least one tooth in any three of the 4 quadrants were selected. VAS was used to note the pain. Each quadrant in an individual was randomly assigned. Profluorid varnish, Admira protect, and PRG‑Barrier coat was used. VAS scores for the tactile and air stimuli were noted immediately after application, 1 week, and after 1 month. The data was analyzed keeping p<0.05 as significant.Results: VAS significantly reduced for all three groups from the base line (p<0.001). Admira protect showed significant reduction of hypersensitivity scores at 1 month compared to other groups (p<0.001).Conclusions: Admira protect was better at lowering the pain due to DH than PRG‑barrier coat and Profluorid varnish after 1 month of application

    Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

    A comparative study on conventional ligation and self ligation bracket systems: An original research

    Aim: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the comparison between conventional ligation and self-ligation bracket system. Methodology: Seven hundred and sixty two patients, consecutively treated with fixed appliances, were evaluated retrospectively. All patients were treated by one orthodontist in a private orthodontic practice. Three hundred and eighty three patients were treated using a conventional pre-adjusted bracket system and 379 patients were treated with active self-ligating brackets. The total treatment time, number of appointments, appointment intervals, number of bracket breakages and number of unscheduled emergency appointments were recorded. Pretreatment characteristics identified by the ICON were related to these variables. Results: The average treatment duration was 15.7 months (Range: 4.1–40.5 months; SD: 5.6 months). Comparable amounts of time were spent in rectangular and round archwires by both appliances. Overall, there was no statistically significant difference between the durations of treatment with active self-ligating brackets and conventional pre-adjusted brackets. The number of debonded brackets and other emergency visits was significantly higher in patients treated with active self-ligating brackets. The treatment characteristics associated with prolonged treatment were: extraction of teeth, a Class II molar relationship and the degree of maxillary crowding or spacing.&nbsp
