‘I opened the door to develop kuduro at JUPSON:’ Music Studios as Spaces of Collective Creativity in the Context of Electronic Dance Music in Angola

In this paper, I demonstrate how studios producing the Angolan electronic dance music (EDM) kuduro (‘hard arse’) in the capital Luanda are usefully investigated as social spaces of collective creativity. I triangulate interviews, observations, close listening and ethnographic participation. Researchers often portray kuduro and other EDM styles in the Global South using what I name the ‘scarcity-resilience narrative’. This narrative gives short shrift to the rich cultural resources that feed into EDM styles. It perpetuates problematic stereotypes about African people and occludes the deliberate labour that kuduro practitioners (‘kuduristas’) invest in their craft. As kuduristas routinely affirm that sociability drives their interpersonal creative processes I portray kuduro studios as social spaces and construe kuduro’s collective creativity through Extended Mind Theory (EMT). In my analysis, I first introduce kuduro studios in Luanda broadly and then focus on two influential kuduro studios: JUPSON and Guetto Produções. I show how kuduristas mobilise their collective creativity inside the studio by tapping into aesthetic strategies and conventions of the rich popular culture that surrounds them. Via EMT, I portray aesthetic duelling, puto-kota (‘elder-younger’) relationships, call-and-response and urban vocal strategies as collectively maintained social institutions. Inside the studio, kuduristas translate these rich resources into the sonic materiality of kuduro tracks which, in turn, are designed to achieve maximum audience response through mobilising the social institutions when radiating out into the world. This paper provides the first, fine-grained study of kuduro studios in Luanda. It de-centres the ‘scarcity-resilience narrative’ of Global South EDM by focusing on collective creativity and, as such, offers a fresh epistemological position on the study of music studios, Global South EDM and popular music in Angola.Peer Reviewe

Spielräume gestalten – nachhaltige Planungsprozesse durch Partizipation von Kindern und Jugendlichen : das Beispiel „Fulda-Galerie“

Als im Frühjahr 2006 ein Wettbewerb zur Gestaltung der Grün- und Freiflächen im Planungsareal der Galerie ausgeschrieben wurde, saß ein (erwachsener) Bewohner mit am Tisch der Jury. Der Siegerbeitrag des Wettbewerbs sieht vor, zunächst nicht jede Freifläche bis zum letzten Grashalm zu durchplanen. Gut ein Jahr nach Abschluss des Lehrforschungsprojekts zur partizipativen Spielraumgestaltung sieht die Stadt Fulda für den Sommer 2007 eine Beteiligungsaktion vor, bei der die heranwachsenden BewohnerInnen die Gestaltung der verbleibenden Flächen mitbestimmen können. Inwieweit sich hier ein Prozess weiterentwickelt, der in Ablauf und Ergebnis zukunftsfähig ist, kann derzeit noch nicht beurteilt werden

Regulation der Cholesterolbiosynthese als spezifische adaptive Wirtsreaktion in murinen Sepsismodellen

Es soll eine Analyse der Regulation der Cholesterolbiosynthese im murinen Lebergewebe für die zwei häufigsten Infektionsfoki bei Sepsis, S. pneumoniae-induzierte Pneumonie und polymikrobielle Peritonitis, erfolgen. Auf Ebene des Transkriptoms werden die für die Regulation der Cholesterolbiosynthese entscheidenden Transkriptionsfaktoren und Enzyme untersucht. Diese Daten werden auf Ebene des Metaboloms durch die Konzentrationen von Synthesezwischenprodukten sowie des Endproduktes Cholesterol in Lebergewebe und Plasma ergänzt und anschließend in einer integrativen Datenanalyse ausgewertet. Dabei soll geklärt werden, ob die Regulation der Cholesterolbiosynthese eine differenzierte adaptive Wirtsreaktion auf die untersuchten Infektionsfoki darstellen kann. Weibliche Mäuse wurden auf zwei experimentelle Gruppen aufgeteilt: pulmonale Infektion durch intra-tracheale Instillation von Pneumokokkenserotypen unterschiedlicher Virulenz und polymikrobielle Peritonitis durch intraperitoneale Injektion einer humanen Faeces-Suspension. Expressionsveränderungen der Zielgene wurden mittels RT-PCR untersucht und Metabolomdaten wurden durch Massenspektroskopie sowie automatisierte Analyse erhoben. Das Pneumoniemodell zeigte in der Auswertung eine konzertierte Hochregulation der Cholesterolbiosynthese. Dabei war das Ausmaß der Regulation abhängig vom verwendeten Erregerserotyp. Bei Peritonitis hingegen zeigte sich eine konzertierte Herabregulation. Daraus lässt sich eine Abhängigkeit der adaptiven Wirtsantwort von Infektionsfokus und Erregerspektrum im Rahmen bei Sepsis ableiten, welche im Pneumoniemodell erregerspezifisch ist. In künftigen klinischen Studien ist daher eine stärkere Berücksichtigung von Infektionsfokus und Erregerspektrum sowie ein engmaschiges Cholesterolmonitoring zu empfehlen, um den pathogenetischen Aspekt in der Entwicklung der Sepsistherapie mehr Bedeutung beizumessen

Ageing and Caring in Rural Environments : cross-national insights from Central Europe

Drawing on interdisciplinary, cross-national perspectives, this open access book contributes to the development of a coherent scientific discourse on social exclusion of older people. The book considers five domains of exclusion (services; economic; social relations; civic and socio-cultural; and community and spatial domains), with three chapters dedicated to analysing different dimensions of each exclusion domain. The book also examines the interrelationships between different forms of exclusion, and how outcomes and processes of different kinds of exclusion can be related to one another. In doing so, major cross-cutting themes, such as rights and identity, inclusive service infrastructures, and displacement of marginalised older adult groups, are considered. Finally, in a series of chapters written by international policy stakeholders and policy researchers, the book analyses key policies relevant to social exclusion and older people, including debates linked to sustainable development, EU policy and social rights, welfare and pensions systems, and planning and development. The book’s approach helps to illuminate the comprehensive multidimensionality of social exclusion, and provides insight into the relative nature of disadvantage in later life. With 77 contributors working across 28 nations, the book presents a forward-looking research agenda for social exclusion amongst older people, and will be an important resource for students, researchers and policy stakeholders working on ageing

AMIQUS – Unter Freunden

Ältere MigrantInnen in Deutschland, die ihr Leben nach besten Kräften aktiv gestalten und den Wunsch nach gesellschaftlicher Teilhabe noch nicht aufgegeben haben, fanden in Forschung und Praxis bisher wenig Aufmerksamkeit. In der Praxis sozialer Arbeit, in der Stadtteilarbeit, in Migrations- und Integrationsprojekten spielt die ältere Generation der Zugewanderten bisher kaum eine Rolle. Hier setzte das Forschungsprojekt AMIQUS an, dessen teils überraschende Ergebnisse in diesem Band versammelt sind. Untersucht wurden die Bedingungen und Ressourcen, vor allem aber die Barrieren für eine angemessene Lebensführung im Alter. Die Grundannahme war, dass nachbarschaftliche Unterstützungssysteme zu entwickeln und zu stärken und Prozesse der Selbstorganisation eigener Interessen im Wohnquartier zu unterstützen, ein wesentlicher Schlüssel gesellschaftlicher Teilhabe ist

Argonaute2 Is Essential for Mammalian Gastrulation and Proper Mesoderm Formation

Mammalian Argonaute proteins (EIF2C1−4) play an essential role in RNA-induced silencing. Here, we show that the loss of eIF2C2 (Argonaute2 or Ago2) results in gastrulation arrest, ectopic expression of Brachyury (T), and mesoderm expansion. We identify a genetic interaction between Ago2 and T, as Ago2 haploinsufficiency partially rescues the classic T/+ short-tail phenotype. Finally, we demonstrate that the ectopic T expression and concomitant mesoderm expansion result from disrupted fibroblast growth factor signaling, likely due to aberrant expression of Eomesodermin. Together, these data indicate that a factor best known as a key component of the RNA-induced silencing complex is required for proper fibroblast growth factor signaling during gastrulation, suggesting a possible micro-RNA function in the formation of a mammalian germ layer

FMRP Regulates the Nuclear Export of Adam9 and Psen1 mRNAs: Secondary Analysis of an N 6 -Methyladenosine Dataset

Fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) binds to and regulates the translation of amyloid-β protein precursor (App) mRNA, but the detailed mechanism remains to be determined. Differential methylation of App mRNA could underlie FMRP binding, message localization and translation efficiency. We sought to determine the role of FMRP and N6-methyladeonsine (m6A) on nuclear export of App mRNA. We utilized the m6A dataset by Hsu and colleagues to identify m6A sites in App mRNA and to determine if the abundance of message in the cytoplasm relative to the nucleus is altered in Fmr1 knockout mouse brain cortex. Given that processing of APP to Aβ and soluble APP alpha (sAPPα) contributes to disease phenotypes, we also investigated whether Fmr1KO associates with nuclear export of the mRNAs for APP protein processing enzymes, including β-site amyloid cleaving enzyme (Bace1), A disintegrin and metalloproteinases (Adams), and presenilins (Psen). Fmr1KO did not alter the nuclear/cytoplasmic abundance of App mRNA. Of 36 validated FMRP targets, 35 messages contained m6A peaks but only Agap2 mRNA was selectively enriched in Fmr1KO nucleus. The abundance of the APP processing enzymes Adam9 and Psen1 mRNA, which code for a minor alpha-secretase and gamma-secretase, respectively, were selectively enriched in wild type cytoplasm

Corrosion and wear behaviour of alumina coatings obtained by various methods

Alumina coatings are widely used in a range of industrial applications to improve corrosion protection, wear and erosion resistance and thermal insulation of metallic surfaces. From various efficient and adjustable processes refined alumina surfaces with long-term use are obtained. It can be seen that cost-efficient arc-sprayed Al coatings post-treated by plasma-electrolytic oxidation (PEO) form Al₂O₃-layers with remarkable corrosion protection, hardness, bonding strength and abrasion resistance as well as extended service time. The properties of these coatings are compared to alumina coatings obtained by flame spraying and atmospheric plasma spraying.Покриви на основі оксиду алюмінію широко використовують у промисловості для поліпшення корозійного захисту, зносо- та ерозійної тривкості, а також теплоізлояції металевих поверхонь. Різними методами отримано удосконалені покриви. Показано, що економічно ефективні алюмінієві покриви, сформовані методом електродугового розпилення, а потім оброблені плазмово-електролітичним оксидуванням, утворюють шари Al₂O₃ з високими антикорозійними характеристиками, твердістю, силою зчеплення та абразивною тривкістю і продовженим ресурсом роботи. Порівняно їх властивості з покривами на основі оксиду алюмінію, одержаними методами полуменевого та атмосферного плазмового розпилення.Покрытия на основе оксида алюминия часто применяют в промышленности для улучшения коррозионной защиты, износо- и эрозионной стойкости, а также теплоизлояции металлических поверхностей. Различнымы методами получены усовершенствованные покрытия. Показано, что экономически эффективные алюминиевые покрытия, сформированные методом электродугового распыления, а потом обработаные плазменно-электролитическим оксидированием, образуют слои Al₂O₃ с высокими антикоррозионными характеристиками, твердостью, силой сцепления, абразивной стойкостью и длительным ресурсом работы. Сравнены их свойства с покрытиями на основе оксида алюминия, полученными методами пламенного и атмосферного плазменного распыления

Der Band zeigt die Ergebnisse des Praxisforschungsprojektes BUSLAR. Untersucht wurde, wie durch Selbstorganisation z.B. in Bürgerhilfevereinen in ländlichen Räumen Aufgaben der Unterstützung älterer Menschen übernommen werden. Von Seiten der Politik wird dieses Engagement begrüßt in der Hoffnung, es könne Lücken in der öffentlichen Daseinsvorsorge ein stückweit schließen – ohne angemessene Unterstützung, ist dieses Engagement nachhaltig gefährdet
