Improving parent-child interactions in maltreating families with the Attachment Video-feedback Intervention: parental childhood trauma as a moderator of treatment effects
Research is demonstrating the effectiveness of attachment-based interventions for maltreating families. However, parents' own traumatic childhood experiences may interfere with treatment effects. The current study investigated in a sample of maltreating families whether effects of the Attachment Video-feedback Intervention (AVI) on parent-child interactive quality were moderated by parental childhood trauma. Families were randomized to receive AVI (n= 29) or a Psychoeducative intervention (PI;n= 19), or they were in anon-randomized comparison group (RS;n= 40). Parents filled out the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and videotapes of parent-child interactions were coded for interactive quality. Parents who received AVI showed improved parent-child interactive quality compared to parents in PI and RS groups. However, parents with more severe levels of childhood trauma showed less improvements. Future research should explore whether clinical attention with a specific focus on trauma would increase treatement effects.Education and Child Studie
Nonstimulated early visual areas carry information about surrounding context
Even within the early sensory areas, the majority of the input to any given cortical neuron comes from other cortical neurons. To extend our knowledge of the contextual information that is transmitted by such lateral and feedback connections, we investigated how visually nonstimulated regions in primary visual cortex (V1) and visual area V2 are influenced by the surrounding context. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and pattern-classification methods to show that the cortical representation of a nonstimulated quarter-field carries information that can discriminate the surrounding visual context. We show further that the activity patterns in these regions are significantly related to those observed with feed-forward stimulation and that these effects are driven primarily by V1. These results thus demonstrate that visual context strongly influences early visual areas even in the absence of differential feed-forward thalamic stimulation
Baseline Functioning and Stress Reactivity in Maltreating Parents and At-Risk Adults: Review and Meta-Analyses of Autonomic Nervous System Studies.
We reviewed and meta-analyzed 10 studies ( N = 492) that examined the association between (risk for) child maltreatment perpetration and basal autonomic activity, and 10 studies ( N = 471) that examined the association between (risk for) child maltreatment and autonomic stress reactivity. We hypothesized that maltreating parents/at-risk adults would show higher basal levels of heart rate (HR) and skin conductance (SC) and lower levels of HR variability (HRV) and would show greater HR and SC stress reactivity, but blunted HRV reactivity. A narrative review showed that evidence from significance testing within and across studies was mixed. The first set of meta-analyses revealed that (risk for) child maltreatment was associated with higher HR baseline activity ( g = 0.24), a possible indication of allostatic load. The second set of meta-analyses yielded no differences in autonomic stress reactivity between maltreating/at-risk participants and nonmaltreating/low-risk comparison groups. Cumulative meta-analyses showed that positive effects for sympathetic stress reactivity as a risk factor for child maltreatment were found in a few early studies, whereas each subsequently aggregated study reduced the combined effect size to a null effect, an indication of the winner's curse. Most studies were underpowered. Estimation of conditional laws given an extreme component
Let be a bivariate random vector. The estimation of a probability of
the form is challenging when is large, and a
fruitful approach consists in studying, if it exists, the limiting conditional
distribution of the random vector , suitably normalized, given that
is large. There already exists a wide literature on bivariate models for which
this limiting distribution exists. In this paper, a statistical analysis of
this problem is done. Estimators of the limiting distribution (which is assumed
to exist) and the normalizing functions are provided, as well as an estimator
of the conditional quantile function when the conditioning event is extreme.
Consistency of the estimators is proved and a functional central limit theorem
for the estimator of the limiting distribution is obtained. The small sample
behavior of the estimator of the conditional quantile function is illustrated

The effect of still-face paradigm on infant behavior: a cross-cultural comparison between mothers and fathers.
Most stillâface paradigm (SFP) studies have been done in Western families with infantâmother dyads. The present study investigated the SFP pattern in 123 Dutch and 63 Chinese 4âmonthâold infants with mothers and fathers. The classic SFP effect was found for positive affect and gaze in both countries. For negative affect, Chinese infants showed a different SFP pattern than Dutch infants. With fathers, in-fants displayed a less pronounced SFP pattern for positive affect and an increase from the still face to the reunion for negative affect. Only a minority of infants showed the ex-pected SFP pattern across episodes. Our findings support that infant emotion expression is influenced by parent gen-der and cultural context. An interesting avenue for further study is the exploration of the origins of withinâ and be-tweenâgender and culture differences in affective communi-cation between parents and infants.Development Psychopathology in context: famil

Callous-unemotional traits, low cortisol reactivity and physical aggression in children: findings from the Wirral Child Health and Development Study
Callous-unemotional (CU) traits are thought to confer risk for aggression via reduced amygdala responsivity to distress cues in others. Low cortisol reactivity is thought to confer risk for aggression via reduced arousal and this effect may be confined to boys. We tested the hypothesis that the association between childhood CU traits and aggression would be greatest in the absence of the inhibitory effects of cortisol reactivity, and that this effect would be sex dependent. Participants were 283 members of a stratified subsample within an epidemiological longitudinal cohort (WCHADS). Cortisol reactivity to a social stressor was assessed at 5 years. CU traits were reported by mothers at 5 years, and physical aggression by mothers and teachers at age 7. Results showed that CU traits were associated with elevated aggression at 7 years controlling for earlier aggression. There was no main effect of cortisol reactivity on regression. The association between CU traits and aggression was moderated by cortisol reactivity (pâ=â.011) with a strong association between CU traits and aggression in the presence of low reactivity, and a small and non-significant association in the presence of high reactivity. This association was further moderated by child sex (pâ=â.041) with the joint effect of high CU traits and low cortisol reactivity seen only in boys (pâ=â.016). We report first evidence that a combined deficit in inhibitory processes associated with CU traits and low cortisol reactivity increases risk for childhood aggression, in a sex-dependent manner
Fully three-dimensional sound speed-corrected multi-wavelength photoacoustic breast tomography
Photoacoustic tomography is a contrast agent-free imaging technique capable
of visualizing blood vessels and tumor-associated vascularization in breast
tissue. While sophisticated breast imaging systems have been recently
developed, there is yet much to be gained in imaging depth, image quality and
tissue characterization capability before clinical translation is possible. In
response, we have developed a hybrid photoacoustic and ultrasound-transmission
tomographic system PAM3. The photoacoustic component has for the first time
three-dimensional multi-wavelength imaging capability, and implements
substantial technical advancements in critical hardware and software
sub-systems. The ultrasound component enables for the first time, a
three-dimensional sound speed map of the breast to be incorporated in
photoacoustic reconstruction to correct for inhomogeneities, enabling accurate
target recovery. The results demonstrate the deepest photoacoustic breast
imaging to date namely 48 mm, with a more uniform field of view than hitherto,
and an isotropic spatial resolution that rivals that of Magnetic Resonance
Imaging. The in vivo performance achieved, and the diagnostic value of
interrogating angiogenesis-driven optical contrast as well as tumor mass sound
