Tesi

Calibrating the elements of a multispectral imaging system

    Get PDF
We describe a method to calibrate the elements of a multispectral system aimed at skylight imaging, which consists of a monochrome charge-coupled device (CCD) camera and a liquid-crystal tunable filter (LCTF). We demonstrate how to calibrate these two devices in order to build a multispectral camera that can obtain spectroradiometric measurements of skylight. Spectral characterizations of the tunable filter and the camera are presented together with a complete study into correcting temporal and spatial noise, which is of key importance in CCDs. We describe all the necessary steps to undertake this work and all the additional instrumentation that must be used to calibrate the radiometric devices correctly. We show how this complete study of our multispectral system allows us to use it as an accurate, high resolution spectroradiometer. This work was financed by the Spanish Red Temática “CIENCIA Y TECNOLOGÍA DEL COLOR” (FIS2005-25312-E), the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, and the European Fund for Regional Development (FEDER) through grant FIS2007-60736. [EN] This paper presents outcomes of a research program on the validation of a scale based on a theoretical proposal of three levels for the digital identity construction and development for older-adult learners. Age barriers for learning in our hyperconnected societies involve several gaps for the adults' lifelong learning and their full inclusion. Digital gaps include the motives and uses of older-adult learners for using digital platforms and resources, for this reason, in this paper the analysis of digital identity is associated with their Internet activity performances, aiming to analyze the relationship among the digital uses with their level of digital identity and digital inclusion. The scale was validated with a sample of senior learners (N = 659) aged 55 years old and over who already are involved in active aging programs of Adult Education in Spain. Twenty Likert-type items were used to measure the agreement with the relevance of the digital identity factors for the three levels, along with two other validated scales for the evaluation of their Internet uses and motivations. Exploratory and confirmatory analysis confirmed a factorial structure of three levels based on the location, access, and significance of digital identity. Results showed that uses and motives correlated with the digital identity of the older-adult learners, with key considerations for the design of digital literacy proposals in Lifelong Learning Programs

17 pags, 6 figs, 3 tabs, 2 schs. -- Supplementary materials are available online at https://www.mdpi.com/article/10 .3390/ijms222413613/s1.Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by parasites of the Leishmania genus that affects 98 countries worldwide, 2 million of new cases occur each year and more than 350 million people are at risk. The use of the actual treatments is limited due to toxicity concerns and the apparition of resistance strains. Therefore, there is an urgent necessity to find new drugs for the treatment of this disease. In this context, enzymes from the polyamine biosynthesis pathway, such as arginase, have been considered a good target. In the present work, a chemical library of benzimidazole derivatives was studied performing computational, enzyme kinetics, biological activity, and cytotoxic effect characterization, as well as in silico ADME-Tox predictions, to find new inhibitors for arginase from Leishmania mexicana (LmARG). The results show that the two most potent inhibitors (compounds 1 and 2) have an I50 values of 52 μM and 82 μM, respectively. Moreover, assays with human arginase 1 (HsARG) show that both compounds are selective for LmARG. According to molecular dynamics simulation studies these inhibitors interact with important residues for enzyme catalysis. Biological activity assays demonstrate that both compounds have activity against promastigote and amastigote, and low cytotoxic effect in murine macrophages. Finally, in silico prediction of their ADME-Tox properties suggest that these inhibitors support the characteristics to be considered drug candidates. Altogether, the results reported in our study suggest that the benzimidazole derivatives are an excellent starting point for design new drugs against leishmanisis. This research was funded by the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACyT), grants 257848 (A.T.-V.) and 258694 (C.A.-D.). The objective of this research was to study the relationship between the body weight and diet, physical activity, and other habits among freshmen students by sex, and to determine whether these habits have changed during the post-era of the COVID-19 pandemic. A serial cross-sectional study with data from 11 Spanish universities was carried out. In total, 10,096 first-year university students (73.2% female, mean age = 19.0 ± 1.5 years) completed an online self-administered questionnaire between 2012 and 2022. For some analyses, questionnaires were categorized by the year in which the survey was filled out as Before COVID-19, Lockdown, and New Normal. In total, 72.9% of participants were within the normal weight range, and 17.7% of men and 11.8% of women were overweight (p < 0.001). The students who did not meet the WHO criteria of physical activity, spent more than 7 h per day sitting, and skipped breakfast had a higher prevalence of obesity (p < 0.05). According to the period of study, the prevalence of overweight/obesity Before COVID-19 was 16.1% (95% CI: 15.4–16.9%), while in Lockdown the prevalence was significantly higher (20.2, 95% CI: 17.1–23.8) and in New Normal it was 18.9% (CI: 15.7–22.5). Moreover, the study suggests that during the Lockdown period, there was a reduction in the practice of physical activity and an increase in the prevalence of a healthy diet. For all these, it is necessary to propose public health interventions that improve the lifestyles of university students. Compared to previous years, today we have a higher failure rate in the subject of mathematics at the upper secondary level. However, math learning websites can be leveraged to improve teaching, and this article is an example of that. Taking advantage of the Khan Academic website, students had this tool to complement their knowledge of certain topics seen in class; resulting in a better use in the students who had access to this tool, but also demonstrating that women got even more benefit

Systematic evaluation of plasma signaling cascades by functional proteomics approaches: SARS-CoV-2 infection as model

Purpose Acute phase reactants (APRs) play a critical role in inflammation. The difference in their physiological functions or the different dynamic ranges of these proteins in plasma makes it difficult to detect them simultaneously and to use several of these proteins as a tool in clinical practice. Experimental Design A novel multiplex assay has been designed and optimized to carry out a high-throughput and simultaneous screening of APRs, allowing the detection of each of them at the same time and in their corresponding dynamic range. Results Using Sars-CoV-2 infection as a model, it has been possible to profile different patterns of acute phase proteins that vary significantly between healthy and infected patients. In addition, severity profiles (acute respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis) have been established. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance Differential profiles in acute phase proteins can serve as a diagnostic and prognostic tool, among patient stratification. The design of this new platform for their simultaneous detection paves the way for them to be more extensive use in clinical practice. We gratefully acknowledge financial support from the Spanish Health Institute Carlos III (ISCIII) for the grants: FIS PI18/00682, FIS PI21/01545 and CB16/12/00400.
