Patient-specific cardiovascular superelastic NiTi stents produced by laser powder bed fusion

    Get PDF
To date, there is a general lack of customizability within the selection of endovascular devices for catheter-based vascular interventions. Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) has been flexibly exploited to produce customized implants using conventional biomedical alloys for orthopedic and dental applications. Applying LPBF for cardiovascular applications, patient-specific stents can be produced with small struts (approximately 100-300 µm), variable geometries, and clinically used metals capable of superelastic behaviour at body temperature (eg. equiatomic nickel-titanium alloys, NiTi). Additionally, the growing availability and use of patient-specific 3D models provides a unique opportunity to outline the necessary manufacturing process that would be required for customizable NiTi devices based on patient geometry. In order to fulfil the potential of the patient-specific superelastic stents, process and design know-how should be expanded to the novel material and fine details at the limits of conventional LPBF machines. In this work, a framework for developing a patient-specific superelastic NiTi stent produced by LPBF is demonstrated. At a proof-of-concept stage, the design procedures are shown in a geometry similar to the artery. The stents with 100 µm nominal strut diameter are later produced with a Ni50.8Ti49.2 powder and heat treated. The results confirm the possibility of producing stents with a design suitable for highly complex patient-specific anatomies and having superelastic behavior at body temperature

Learned multiphysics inversion with differentiable programming and machine learning

We present the Seismic Laboratory for Imaging and Modeling/Monitoring (SLIM) open-source software framework for computational geophysics and, more generally, inverse problems involving the wave-equation (e.g., seismic and medical ultrasound), regularization with learned priors, and learned neural surrogates for multiphase flow simulations. By integrating multiple layers of abstraction, our software is designed to be both readable and scalable. This allows researchers to easily formulate their problems in an abstract fashion while exploiting the latest developments in high-performance computing. We illustrate and demonstrate our design principles and their benefits by means of building a scalable prototype for permeability inversion from time-lapse crosswell seismic data, which aside from coupling of wave physics and multiphase flow, involves machine learning

Positronium Portal into Hidden Sector: A new Experiment to Search for Mirror Dark Matter

The understanding of the origin of dark matter has great importance for cosmology and particle physics. Several interesting extensions of the standard model dealing with solution of this problem motivate the concept of hidden sectors consisting of SU(3)xSU(2)_LxU(1)_Y singlet fields. Among these models, the mirror matter model is certainly one of the most interesting. The model explains the origin of parity violation in weak interactions, it could also explain the baryon asymmetry of the Universe and provide a natural ground for the explanation of dark matter. The mirror matter could have a portal to our world through photon-mirror photon mixing (epsilon). This mixing would lead to orthopositronium (o-Ps) to mirror orthopositronium oscillations, the experimental signature of which is the apparently invisible decay of o-Ps. In this paper, we describe an experiment to search for the decay o-Ps -> invisible in vacuum by using a pulsed slow positron beam and a massive 4pi BGO crystal calorimeter. The developed high efficiency positron tagging system, the low calorimeter energy threshold and high hermiticity allow the expected sensitivity in mixing strength to be epsilon about 10^-9, which is more than one order of magnitude below the current Big Bang Nucleosynthesis limit and in a region of parameter space of great theoretical and phenomenological interest. The vacuum experiment with such sensitivity is particularly timely in light of the recent DAMA/LIBRA observations of the annual modulation signal consistent with a mirror type dark matter interpretation.Comment: 40 pages, 29 Figures 2 Tables v2: Ref. added, Fig. 29 and some text added to explain idea for backscattering e+ background suppression, corrected typos v3: minor corrections: Eq 2.1 corrected (6 lines-> 5 lines), Eq.2.17: two extra "-" signs remove

Covariant Description of Flavor Conversion in the LHC Era

A simple covariant formalism to describe flavor and CP violation in the left-handed quark sector in a model independent way is provided. The introduction of a covariant basis, which makes the standard model approximate symmetry structure manifest, leads to a physical and transparent picture of flavor conversion processes. Our method is particularly useful to derive robust bounds on models with arbitrary mechanisms of alignment. Known constraints on flavor violation in the K and D systems are reproduced in a straightforward manner. Assumptions-free limits, based on top flavor violation at the LHC, are then obtained. In the absence of signal, with 100 fb^{-1} of data, the LHC will exclude weakly coupled (strongly coupled) new physics up to a scale of 0.6 TeV (7.6 TeV), while at present no general constraint can be set related to Delta t=1 processes. LHC data will constrain Delta F=2 contributions via same-sign tops signal, with a model independent exclusion region of 0.08 TeV (1.0 TeV). However, in this case, stronger bounds are found from the study of CP violation in D-bar D mixing with a scale of 0.57 TeV (7.2 TeV). In addition, we apply our analysis to models of supersymmetry and warped extra dimension. The minimal flavor violation framework is also discussed, where the formalism allows to distinguish between the linear and generic non-linear limits within this class of models.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures. Potential effects of ionizing radiation on the evidentiary value of DNA, latent fingerprints, hair, and fibers: A comprehensive review and new results

    Get PDF
An extensive literature review and new post-irradiation experimental results are presented of genotyping blood stains and hair, and physical examinations of latent fingerprints, hairs, and fibers. Results indicate that successful development of nuclear short tandem repeat (STR) and mitochondrial DNA sequence profiles from human blood and hair evidence is possible—up to a point—following exposure to gamma, neutron, beta, and alpha radiation at several levels that would most likely be present at this type of crime scene (i.e., a “dirty bomb,” etc.). Commencing at gamma radiation levels between 90 and 900 kGy, DNA analysis using conventional DNA techniques was unsuccessful. In general, irradiation negatively affected the quality of latent fingerprints. All four radiation types degraded most fingerprint samples at all doses; nevertheless, many fingerprints remained of value for potential use in comparison. Although variable from one hair to another, microscopic changes observed for all types and levels of irradiation could potentially result in false exclusions. Negligible microscopic changes were observed in papers and fibers (used as substrates for fingerprints and bloodstains) up to 90 kGy gamma, but fluorescence of fibers began to change above that dose. Paper and fibers, as well as plastic evidence enclosures, became extremely brittle leading to breakage after a gamma dose of 900 kGy

Second order QCD corrections to inclusive semileptonic b \to Xc l \bar \nu_l decays with massless and massive lepton

We extend previous computations of the second order QCD corrections to semileptonic b \to c inclusive transitions, to the case where the charged lepton in the final state is massive. This allows accurate description of b \to c \tau \bar \nu_\tau decays. We review techniques used in the computation of O(\alpha_s^2) corrections to inclusive semileptonic b \to c transitions and present extensive numerical studies of O(\alpha_s^2) QCD corrections to b \to c l \bar \nu_l decays, for l =e, \tau.Comment: 30 pages, 4 figures, 5 table
