South African youth in the age of freedom

The social role of youth is an issue that, in the last twenty years, has become a key point of the political agenda of many African nations. In South Africa, the consequences of segregationist politics, market economy, and migrations, have profoundly shaped the social and cultural role of youth, both in urban and rural contexts. Moreover, the end of apartheid has opened a new period of wide transformation. Based on my ethnographic research in kwaMashabane, a remote South African rural area, this paper analyses how the social role of male youth is shaped by national state policy and by local dynamics. Moreover, I will focus on the relationship between models of adulthood, and the strategies that youth adopt to cope with conflicts and continuities. This analysis will show how post-apartheid freedom and the constraints of the local social structure are negotiated, and how society is coping with the complex relationships between cultural reproduction and social change

Seeds of revolt. Intergenerational relationships in rural KwaZulu, South Africa

Na África do Sul as políticas segregacionistas, a afirmação do capitalismo e as migrações têm moldado profundamente o papel social e cultural dos jovens, seja no meio urbano, seja no rural. Além disso, o fim do regime do apartheid inaugurou um período de amplas transformações. Baseado numa pesquisa etnográfica em KwaMashabane, uma região rural da África do Sul, este artigo analisa como o papel social dos jovens homens é moldado pelas políticas do Estado-nação e pelas dinâmicas locais. Mediante uma comparação entre os padrões de maturidades afirmados localmente e as estratégias que os jovens adotam para lidar com a condição deles, de “não adultos”, será possível evidenciar como a “liberdade” implícita da época do pós-apartheid lida com a estrutura sociocultural local e como a sociedade enfrenta a complexa dinâmica entre reprodução e mudança social

“Grassroot development”, innovation and rural producers’ organizations: a mozambican case study

This paper focuses on the role of rural producers’ organizations as factors of innovation in those contexts characterized by subsistence level agricultural production, by means of a case study on the cooperative associations that compose UDCM (União Distrital dos Camponeses de Morrumbala), in the district of Morrumbala (Zambezia province, Mozambique). Our methodology adopts an interdisciplinary perspective, joining together the economic and the anthropological analysis and using both qualitative and quantitative data. Data collected underline that cooperative is a medium useful to mediate between innovations introduction and the transformations of social context in which the members live. Moreover we are going to show that cooperatives are brokers able to introduce peasants to an accumulation pattern without eliminating redistribution dynamics. The social change imposed by a market system that might introduce, by means of the surplus production, to a capitalistic development, is therefore mediated with the local social and cultural context

Reconfigurando o meio ambiente. Reflexões sobre migrações e disputas ambientais na ilha de santa Catarina

Since the eighties, Santa Catarina Island has become a tourist and housing destination for many Brazilians and foreigners, usually people with high cultural or economic capital. The analysis of the dynamics between transformations that "come from outside" and the local reception of them allows, as well as reflecting on these social transformations, to grasp invention’s processes at the local level, of categories such as environmentalism, sustainability. Moreover, it underlines the role of migrants in this specific space-time and their territoriality in contexts of cultural hybridization.A Ilha de Santa Catarina, a partir dos anos oitenta, começou a ser destino turístico e de moradia para muitos brasileiros e estrangeiros, normalmente pessoas com elevado capital cultural ou econômico. A análise da dinâmica entre transformações que “chegam de fora” e a recepção local deles permite de abordar os processos de invenção no nível local, de categorias como o ambientalismo, a sustentabilidade e o papel dos migrantes neste espaço-temporal específico e sua territorialidade em contextos de hibridação cultura

O Museu Suape: Reflexões sobre a contramusealização dos acervos visuais

The discovery of a collection of Super 8 films, recorded in the 1970s, documenting the construction of the Suape Port in Pernambuco, is the focus of this article. These films were accidentally found during community-focused extension projects, aimed at the local community affected by an oil spill. The need to preserve the content of the collection, initially meant to be forgotten, has then become an issue. The digitization of the images and the creation of an experimental museum are proposed to make them accessible to the public. The Suape Museum emerges as a counter-narrative, seeking to recover and reinterpret these images within a context of reflection on the present and future of the region. For the community affected by the transformations and impacts of the port construction, the collection represents traumatic memories. Through a collaborative approach to musealization, the aim is to produce new meanings from these images.A descoberta de um acervo de filmes em Super 8, gravados na década de 1970, que registram a construção do Porto de Suape, em Pernambuco, é o foco deste artigo. Esses filmes foram acidentalmente encontrados durante projetos de extensão direcionados à comunidade local, que havia sido afetada por um vazamento de óleo. Inicialmente destinado ao esquecimento, o acervo despertou a necessidade de preservação e divulgação de seu conteúdo. A digitalização das imagens e a criação de um museu experimental foi o caminho para torná-las acessíveis ao público. O Museu Suape emerge como uma contranarrativa, buscando resgatar e reinterpretar essas imagens em um contexto de reflexão sobre o presente e o futuro da região. Para a comunidade afetada pelas transformações e impactos da construção do Porto, o acervo representa memórias traumáticas. Por meio de uma abordagem colaborativa de musealização, busca-se construir novos significados a partir dessas imagens

Alvorada do Remo: Memória, cidade e imagens

Resumo: O trabalho que se segue elabora uma reflexão sobre os processos de construção de narrativas sobre a memória e a história do remo em Florianópolis, capital do estado de Santa Catarina, a partir da introdução e do incentivo desse esporte durante a primeira metade do século XX. Para tal, foi analisada a exposição fotográfica intitulada "A História em 100 anos. Homenagem a todos que dignificaram as cores riachuelinas", construída, musealizada e exposta nos salões do centenário Clube Náutico Riachuelo, pelos próprios riachuelos durante o ano de 2015. Essa exposição se insere dentro de um conjunto de atividades comemorativas pelo centenário da fundação do Clube Náutico Riachuelo, como homenagem à agremiação esportiva mais antiga do estado, que se mantém ativa atualmente.Palavras-chaves: Remo. Imagem DAWN OF ROWING: MEMORY, CITY AND IMAGES Abstract: The work that follows elaborates a reflection on the processes of building narratives about the memory and history of rowing in Florianópolis, capital of the state of Santa Catarina, from the introduction and encouragement of this sport during the first half of the 20th century. To this end, the photographic exhibition entitled "History in 100 years. Homage to everyone who dignified the colors of Riachuelo" was analyzed, built, musealized and displayed in the halls of the centenary Clube Náutico Riachuelo, by the riachuelos during 2015. This exhibition is part of a set of commemorative activities for the centenary of the foundation of the Clube Náutico Riachuelo, as a tribute to the oldest sports association in the state, which is still active today.Keywords: Rowing. Anthropológicas podcast. Estéticas e políticas no campo público

A quarentena compulsória impôs a muitos/as antropólogos/as o duplo desafio de desenvolver estratégias de pesquisa virtuais ou netnográficas e de produzir conteúdos sobre o contexto atual para mobilizar um debate informado pelas ciências sociais sobre a pandemia. A partir dessas considerações, um grupo de professores do Departamento de Antropologia e Museologia da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco lançou uma série de podcast, chamada de Anthropológicas, com o objetivo de propor debates de cunho interdisciplinares, gravados virtualmente e publicados em formato de podcasts. Exploramos essa experiência mobilizando o recente debate sobre a categoria de infraestrutura, entendida aqui como um conjunto de relações entre humanos e não humanos que permite a produção e a circulação de formas específicas. Analisaremos, através de uma abordagem etnográfica multimodal, como esse conjunto é resultado de uma “estética política” que, inscrita no implícito distanciamento das formas de comunicação que mais circulam na academia, visa enfrentar os dilemas de uma antropologia pública frente a um dos mais complexos debates da história recente.Palavras-chave: Podcast. Antropologia Pública.  Podcast anthropological: aesthetics and policies in the public field Abstract: Compulsory quarantine has imposed on many anthropologists the double challenge of developing virtual or netnographic research strategies and producing content about the current context in order to mobilize an informed debate by the social sciences about the pandemic. Based on these considerations, a group of professors from the Department of Anthropology and Museology of the Federal University of Pernambuco produced a podcast series, called Anthropologicas. Its aim is to propose interdisciplinary debates, virtually recorded and published in podcast format. This experience is analyzed through the category of infrastructure, understood here as a set of relationships between human and non-human that allows the production and circulation of specific forms. The podcast is the result of a specific "political aesthetic", implicitly detached from the forms that circulate most in academia. A multimodal ethnographic approach allows us to confront the dilemmas of public anthropology, one of the most complex debates in recent anthropology history.Keywords: Podcast. Pandemic.
