ObjectivesIn this study we investigated the probable protective effects of thymoquinone on amikacin-induced ototoxicity in rats.MethodsThirty-two healthy rats were divided into four groups (amikacin, amikacin+thymoquinone, thymoquinone, and no treatment). Thymoquinone was fed to the rats via oral gavage in a dose of 40 mg/kg/day throughout the study period of 14 days. Amikacin was given by the intramuscular route in a dose of 600 mg/kg/day. Audiological assessment was conducted by the distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) and auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests, administered to all rats at the beginning of the study, and also on days 7 and 15. Biochemical parameters were calculated at the termination of the study to evaluate the oxidative status.ResultsThere were significant decreases in DPOAE values and significant increases in ABR thresholds of the amikacin group on days 7 and 15, as compared to the amikacin+thymoquinone group. While ABR thresholds of the amikacin group increased significantly on days 7 and 15 as compared to their initial values, there were no significant differences between the initial and the 7th and 15th day values of ABR thresholds in the amikacin+thymoquinone group. Total oxidant status and oxidative stress index values of the amikacin+thymoquinone group were significantly lower than those of the amikacin group. Total antioxidant status values of the amikacin+thymoquinone group were significantly higher than those of the amikacin group.ConclusionOur study has demonstrated that the ototoxic effect brought forth by amikacin could be overcome with the concurrent use of thymoquinone

Ozer, Alev/0000-0002-0934-0226WOS: 000376566600016Aim: To analyze the cervical cytological abnormalities which are detected in women undergoing Pap screening in a tertiary health care center within Siirt, a southeastern province of Turkey. Material and Method: A total of 3000 women who underwent Pap screening at the study center between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009 were recruited for the study. The women who were diagnosed with benign epithelial changes, infectious alterations, as well as atypical squamous cells with undetermined significance (ASC-US), atypical squamous cells of high significance (ASC-H), and low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) were included. Results: Benign epithelial alterations, infectious changes, ASCUS, ASC-H, and LSIL were detected in 83.7%, 15.3%, 0.8%, 0.1% and 0.1% of the Pap smears respectively. A significant correlation was found between the patient age and the histopathological alterations in the Pap smears (r= 0.072, p= 0.001). Although no correlation could be detected between gravidity and Pap smear results (r= 0.033, p= 0.067), a significant correlation existed between parity and the histopathological findings within the Pap smears (r= 0.051, p= 0.005). Interestingly, the Pap smear results were found to be unrelated to socioeconomic status (r= 0.088, p= 0.168), education level (r= 0.048, p= 0.257), and smoking habit (r= 0.086, p= 0.077). Discussion: The present study has reported a value of 1.0% for the overall prevalence of cervical cytological abnormalities, which is much lower than in western countries. Thus, rather than being dependent on the data reported by clinical studies that have been conducted in western countries, Turkish health care policy should be based on the data obtained from national studies

Ozer, Alev/0000-0002-0934-0226WOS: 000376567100031Uterine prolapse that appears for the first time during pregnancy is a rarely encountered clinical entity, complicating 1 in 10000 to 1 in 15000 deliveries. A 30-year-old, gravida 3, para 2 woman with a 35-week-old pregnancy who was admitted to the study center was diagnosed with stage III C uterine prolapse according to the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification System. Bed rest in the Trendelenburg position and administration of saline soaks for the reduction of cervical edema were recommended for the palliative treatment of the patient. Five weeks later, a healthy male baby with a birthweight of 3500 grams was delivered by cesarean section. Appropriate management of pregnancy-associated uterine prolapse consists of conservative treatment modalities throughout pregnancy

Effects Of Distractors On Upright Balance Performance In School-Aged Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Preliminary Study

Introduction: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a common impairing neuropsychiatric disorder with onset in early childhood. Almost half of the children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder also experience a variety of motor-related dysfunctions ranging from fine/gross motor control problems to difficulties in maintaining balance. Objectives: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of distractors two different auditory distractors namely, relaxing music and white noise on upright balance performance in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Methods: We compared upright balance performance and the involvement of different sensory systems in the presence of auditory distractors between school-aged children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (n = 26) and typically developing controls (n = 20). Neurocom SMART Balance Master Dynamic Posturography device was used for the sensory organization test. Sensory organization test was repeated three times for each participant in three different test environments. Results: The balance scores in the silence environment were lower in the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder group but the differences were not statistically significant. In addition to lower balance scores the visual and vestibular ratios were also lower. Auditory distractors affected the general balance performance positively for both groups. More challenging conditions, using an unstable platform with distorted somatosensory signals were more affected. Relaxing music was more effective in the control group, and white noise was more effective in the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder group and the positive effects of white noise became more apparent in challenging conditions. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study evaluating balance performance in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder under the effects of auditory distractors. Although more studies are needed, our results indicate that auditory distractors may have enhancing effects on upright balance performance in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The role of omentin in early pregnancy losses

    No full text
This prospective case-control study aimed to investigate the role of omentin, an anti-inflammatory adipokine in early pregnancy losses. The study comprised 47 women with spontaneous miscarriage at a gestational age of 8–12 weeks and 36 healthy pregnant women, matched for age, body mass index and gestational age, gravdity and parity. A significant negative correlation was determined between plasma omentin concentrations and body weight (r= −0.242, p = .027) and gestational age (r= −0.249, p = .023). Although not statistically, the women with spontaneous miscarriage had higher plasma concentrations of omentin compared to those with healthy pregnancies (7.798 ± 3.453 ng/ml vs. 7.200 ± 3.442 ng/ml, p = .435). This finding might support the hypothesis that increased inflammation plays a role in the etiopathogenesis of early pregnancy losses. These results revealed the potential use of omentin to predict unhealthy pregnancies.Impact statement What is already known on the subject of the paper? The exact mechanism of early pregnancy loss with euploid foetal karyotype has not been elucidated yet. An alteration in the physiological inflammatory response of pregnancy might be one of the mechanisms responsible for miscarriage. What does this study add? To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the role of omentin in early pregnancy loss. The results obtained from this current study could be used to clarify the relationship between inflammatory processes and miscarriage. What are the implications for clinical practice and/or further research? Identification of the role of omentin in the process of early pregnancy losses would be helpful in order to design further studies to determine the feasibility of using omentin as a serum marker to predict the risk of miscarriage in early pregnancies. Additionally, understanding of the etiopathogenesis of early pregnancy losses with euploid karyotype will give a lead to further researches which could focus on exploring new interventions to detect and treat altered inflammation in early pregnancies
