    Ácido úrico sérico, un viejo biomarcador que puede predecir riesgo de cáncer entre pacientes obesos

    Antecedentes: Es discutido si niveles elevados de ácido úrico sérico (AUS) se relacionan con el cáncer. El objetivo del presente estudio es determinar los niveles de ácido úrico entre pacientes obesos con cáncer (POC) de cualquier tipo. Método: Se tomaron en cuenta pacientes consecutivos con cáncer. Se determinó el IMC e indicadores bioquímicos que incluyeron AUS. Se analizaron los datos mediante estadística descriptiva, correlación de Pearson, así como X2 y t-test. Resultados: El promedio de edad de los 146 pacientes fue de 60.6 16.67 años. Se excluyeron 49 pacientes con cáncer de próstata por su conocida relación inversa con obesidad. El promedio de edad de los 97 pacientes restantes fue 54.5 ± 16.66 años. Fueron no obesos 51 pacientes (edad 53.1), 28 del sexo femenino y 23 masculino; con POC 46 pacientes (edad 55.8), 28 del sexo femenino y 18 masculino. El AUS en POC fue en promedio 5.29 y los de peso normal tuvieron en promedio 5.0 mg/dl. Hubo predominio de POC en mujeres mayores de 45 años. Los pacientes con POC menores de 45 años presentaron AUS más elevado (X2, two-tailed, p=0.0393). Discusión: El predominio de POC en mujeres mayores de 45 puede ser explicado metabólicamente. Fue mayor el AUS en POC menores de 45 años. La hipótesis del peligro de Matzinger propone que las DAMPs disparan una respuesta inmune en ausencia de PAMPs. El ácido úrico es candidato DAMPs y puede participar en la carcinogénesis en pacientes con POC menores de 45 años

    Estudio de la hidrofobicidad de la caolinita de La Unión, Antioquia

    In this research three methodologies to convert the hydrophilic surface of kaolinite into a hydrophobic surface are proposed, this condition is required to recover this mineral by means of froth flotation. Taking into account the anisotropy, zeta potential and complex surface electrical properties of the kaolinite, three surface chemical treatments based on the interacting and absorption of anionic collectors onto the mineral surface, causing an increase in the contact angle and thus increased hydrophobicity of kaolinite were applied. The methodologies proposed were interactions of kaolinite particles with: sodium dodecyl sulfate solutions with concentration 1x10-3M, 1x10-4M, 1x10-5M; sodium dodecyl sulfate solutions 1x10-3M, 1x10-4M, 1x10-5M with further interaction with kerosene solutions 127000 ppm; and oleic acid solutions 1x10-3M, 1x10-4M, 1x10-5M, each one with a five minutes of interaction. The experimental results obtained by zeta potential and contact angle of the kaolinite before and after applying chemical treatments indicate that larger the chain length of the collector and its concentration, bigger the contact angle and so, more hydrophobic the surface (edge or face). In order to optimize, control and understand this solid-liquid interaction phenomenon is suggested to find out about the hydrophobization mechanism of kaolinite with oleic acid and its percentage of hydrophobization.En este artículo se proponen tres metodologías para convertir la superficie hidrófila de la caolinita en una superficie hidrófoba, condición requerida para recuperar este mineral mediante el proceso de flotación espumante. A partir del conocimiento del comportamiento anisotrópico, potencial zeta y propiedades eléctricas superficiales complejas de la caolinita, se aplicaron tres tratamientos de química de superficies a la caolinita, basados en el empleo de colectores aniónicos que interactúan y se adsorben sobre la superficie del mineral, provocando un aumento en el ángulo de contacto y por tanto aumentado la hidrofobicidad de la caolinita. Las metodologías propuestas fueron interacciones de partículas de caolinita con: soluciones de dodecil sulfato de sodio de concentración 1x10-3M, 1x10-4M, 1x10-5M; soluciones de dodecil sulfato de sodio 1x10-3M, 1x10-4M, 1x10-5M con posterior interacción con emulsiones de queroseno 127000 ppm; y soluciones de ácido oleico 1x10-3M, 1x10-4M, 1x10-5M cada uno de ellos con un tiempo total de interacción de 5 min. Los resultados experimentales mediante potencial zeta y ángulo de contacto de la caolinita, antes y después de aplicar los tratamientos químicos, permitieron concluir que mientras mayor es la longitud de la cadena del colector y la concentración del mismo se obtiene un mayor ángulo de contacto y por tanto una superficie (borde o cara) más hidrófoba. Para optimizar, controlar y comprender este fenómeno de interacción sólido-líquido se sugiere determinar el porcentaje de hidrofobización y el mecanismo de hidrofobización de caolinita con ácido oleico, colector de cadena hidrocarbonada más larga

    Mitochondrial membrane models built from native lipid extracts: Interfacial and transport properties

    The mitochondrion is an essential organelle enclosed by two membranes whose functionalities depend on their very specific protein and lipid compositions. Proteins from the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM) are specialized in mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy, whereas proteins of the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) have dedicated functions in cellular respiration and apoptosis. As for lipids, the OMM is enriched in glycerophosphatidyl choline but cardiolipin is exclusively found within the IMM. Though the lipid topology and distribution of the OMM and IMM are known since more than four decades, little is known about the interfacial and dynamic properties of the IMM and OMM lipid extracts. Here we build monolayers, supported bilayers and giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) of native OMM and IMM lipids extracts from porcine heart. Additionally, we perform a comparative analysis on the interfacial, phase immiscibility and mechanical properties of both types of extract. Our results show that IMM lipids form more expanded and softer membranes than OMM lipids, allowing a better understanding of the physicochemical and biophysical properties of mitochondrial membranes.Fil: Schiaffarino, Olivia.     Effect of Nb as dopant of hydrotalcite catalysts during the ethanol condensation to optimize n-Butanol production

    The present study optimizes Cu-supported catalysts on hydrotalcite for the synthesis of n-butanol whose interest is in its use as biofuel, due to its superior performance in comparison with other short-chain alcohols. The catalytic performance was improved by adding Nb to the catalytic formulation. In this way, several Cu-Nb catalysts supported on hydrotalcites (Mg/Al) with different Nb loadings were synthesized by incipient wetness impregnation and characterized by H2 temperature-programmed reduction, X-ray diffraction, N2 physisorption, CO2 and NH3 thermo-programmed desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was shown that the incorporation of Nb promoted a suitable balance between the acid-basic and redox sites, modulating the Cu0/Cu+ dehydrogenation/hydrogenation properties for the n-BuOH production. The synthesis of multiple value-added products (n-BuOH, acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate, and 1-hexanol) was achieved in both the liquid (at 180 ºC) and gas phase (150 350 ºC), where it was demonstrated that both the n-BuOH selectivity and ethanol con- version improved with the Nb addition.     Feasibility assessment of the interactive use of a Monte Carlo algorithm in treatment planning for intraoperative electron radiation therapy

    This work analysed the feasibility of using a fast, customized Monte Carlo (MC) method to perform accurate computation of dose distributions during pre- and intraplanning of intraoperative electron radiation therapy (IOERT) procedures. The MC method that was implemented, which has been integrated into a specific innovative simulation and planning tool, is able to simulate the fate of thousands of particles per second, and it was the aim of this work to determine the level of interactivity that could be achieved. The planning workflow enabled calibration of the imaging and treatment equipment, as well as manipulation of the surgical frame and insertion of the protection shields around the organs at risk and other beam modifiers. In this way, the multidisciplinary team involved in IOERT has all the tools necessary to perform complex MC dosage simulations adapted to their equipment in an efficient and transparent way. To assess the accuracy and reliability of this MC technique, dose distributions for a monoenergetic source were compared with those obtained using a general-purpose software package used widely in medical physics applications. Once accuracy of the underlying simulator was confirmed, a clinical accelerator was modelled and experimental measurements in water were conducted. A comparison was made with the output from the simulator to identify the conditions under which accurate dose estimations could be obtained in less than 3 min, which is the threshold imposed to allow for interactive use of the tool in treatment planning. Finally, a clinically relevant scenario, namely early-stage breast cancer treatment, was simulated with pre- and intraoperative volumes to verify that it was feasible to use the MC tool intraoperatively and to adjust dose delivery based on the simulation output, without compromising accuracy. The workflow provided a satisfactory model of the treatment head and the imaging system, enabling proper configuration of the treatment planning system and providing good accuracy in the dosage simulation

    Results of a survey on peri-operative nutritional support in pancreatic and biliary surgery in Spain

    Introduction: a survey on peri-operative nutritional support in pancreatic and biliary surgery among Spanish hospitals in 2007 showed that few surgical groups followed the 2006 ESPEN guidelines. Ten years later we sent a questionnaire to check the current situation. Methods: a questionnaire with 21 items sent to 38 centers, related to fasting time before and after surgery, nutritional screening use and type, time and type of peri-operative nutritional support, and number of procedures. Results: thirty-four institutions responded. The median number of pancreatic resections (head/total) was 29.5 (95 % CI: 23.0-35; range, 5-68) (total, 1002); of surgeries for biliary malignancies (non-pancreatic), 9.8 (95 % CI: 7.3-12.4; range, 2-30); and of main biliary resections for benign conditions, 10.4 (95 % CI: 7.6-13.3; range, 2-33). Before surgery, only 41.2 % of the sites used nutritional support (< 50 % used any nutritional screening procedure). The mean duration of preoperative fasting for solid foods was 9.3 h (range, 6-24 h); it was 6.6 h for liquids (range, 2-12). Following pancreatic surgery, 29.4 % tried to use early oral feeding, but 88.2 % of the surveyed teams used some nutritional support; 26.5 % of respondents used TPN in 100 % of cases. Different percentages of TPN and EN were used in the other centers. In malignant biliary surgery, 22.6 % used TPN always, and EN in 19.3 % of cases. Conclusions: TPN is the commonest nutrition approach after pancreatic head surgery. Only 29.4 % of the units used early oral feeding, and 32.3 % used EN; 22.6 % used TPN regularly after surgery for malignant biliary tumours. The 2006 ESPEN guideline recommendations are not regularly followed 12 years after their publication in our country

    DVINO: A RISC-V vector processor implemented in 65nm technology

    This paper describes the design, verification, implementation and fabrication of the Drac Vector IN-Order (DVINO) processor, a RISC-V vector processor capable of booting Linux jointly developed by BSC, CIC-IPN, IMB-CNM (CSIC), and UPC. The DVINO processor includes an internally developed two-lane vector processor unit as well as a Phase Locked Loop (PLL) and an Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC). The paper summarizes the design from architectural as well as logic synthesis and physical design in CMOS 65nm technology.The DRAC project is co-financed by the European Union Regional Development Fund within the framework of the ERDF Operational Program of Catalonia 2014-2020 with a grant of 50% of total eligible cost. Diez años después enviamos un cuestionario para comprobar la situación actual. Métodos: treinta y ocho centros recibieron un cuestionario con 21 preguntas sobre tiempo de ayunas antes y después de la cirugía, cribado nutricional, duración y tipo de soporte nutricional perioperatorio, y número de procedimientos. Resultados: respondieron 34 grupos. La mediana de pancreatectomías (cabeza/total) fue de 29,5 (IC 95 %: 23,0-35; rango, 5-68) (total, 1002), la de cirugías biliares malignas de 9,8 (IC 95 %: 7,3-12,4; rango, 2-30) y la de resecciones biliares por patología benigna de 10,4 (IC 95 %: 7,6-13,3; rango, 2-33). Solo el 41,2 % de los grupos utilizaban soporte nutricional antes de la cirugía (< 50 % habian efectuado un cribado nutricional). El tiempo medio de ayuno preoperatorio para sólidos fue de 9,3 h (rango, 6-24 h), y de 6,6 h para líquidos (rango, 2-12). Tras la pancreatectomía, el 29,4 % habían intentado administrar una dieta oral precoz, pero el 88,2 % de los grupos usaron algún tipo de soporte nutricional y el 26,5 % usaron NP en el 100 % de los casos. Los demás grupos usaron diferentes porcentajes de NP y NE en sus casos. En la cirugía biliar maligna, el 22,6 % utilizaron NP siempre y NE en el 19,3 % de los casos. Conclusiones: la NP es el soporte nutricional más utilizado tras la cirugía de cabeza pancreática. Solo el 29,4 % de las unidades usan nutrición oral precoz y el 32,3 % emplean la NE tras este tipo de cirugía. El 22,6 % de las instituciones usan NP habitualmente tras la cirugía de tumores biliares malignos. Las guías ESPEN 2006 no se siguen de forma habitual en nuestro país tras más de 10 años desde su publicación

    Floc-Flotation of Malachite Fines with an Octyl Hydroxamate and Kerosene Mixture

    Malachite fines are easily produced in the grinding process, leading to low malachite flotation recovery. Floc-flotation of malachite fines with an octyl hydroxamate and kerosene mixture was studied to improve the flotation recovery, using microflotation, microscopy image observations, contact angle measurements, and Extended Derjguin&#8211;Landau&#8211;Verwey&#8211;Overbeek (EDLVO) analysis. The results showed that the addition of octyl hydroxamate as an emulsifier of kerosene enhanced the aggregation of malachite fines and improved malachite flotation recovery. In addition, when kerosene droplets were smaller and of uniform size distribution, the spreading of kerosene droplets on the malachite surface improved. The enhanced spreading of kerosene droplets led to higher coverage of kerosene on the malachite surface, resulting in improved hydrophobic aggregation and flotation recovery
