Pochonia chlamydosporia is the most prevalent fungal species responsible for Meloidogyne suppression in sustainable vegetable production systems
The fluctuations in Meloidogyne densities and fungal egg parasitism were determined from
February 2015 to July 2016 in four vegetable production sites conducted under organic production
and two sides conducted under integrated standards. At each site, the soil nematode densities at
transplanting and at the end of the crops, the galling index, the number of eggs in roots, and the
percentage of fungal egg parasitism were determined, and the fungal species were identified. In
addition, two pot experiments were conducted with soil taken from each site in February 2015 and
2016 to assess the fungal egg parasitism comparing non-sterile and sterile soil from each site. In field
conditions, the nematode population densities in the soil decreased along the crop rotations. The
maximum number of eggs per plant was recorded in the spring–summer crops. Egg parasitism
ranged from 11.2 to 55% in the organic sites and from 0.8 to 16.5% in the integrated production sites.

Effect of molasses application alone or combined with trichoderma asperellum T-34 on Meloidogyne spp. management and soil microbial activity in organic production systems
The effect of molasses alone or combined with Trichoderma asperellum T34 Biocontrol® was
assessed on Meloidogyne reproduction, disease severity, and density and activity of soil microor-
ganisms in pot and field experiments. Firstly, molasses application at 1 mL m−2 was assessed in
four different textured soils. Secondly, molasses application at 5, 10, 20, and 40 mL m−2, alone or
combined with T34, was assessed in pot and field experiments at 10 mL m−2 in two different textured
soils. The application of 1 mL m−2 of molasses was effective in reducing nematode reproduction in
the loam textured soil but not in sandy clay loam, sandy loam, or clay loam textured soils. Increasing
molasses dosage reduced the tomato dry shoot and fresh root weights, producing phytotoxicity at
40 mL m−2. The disease severity and nematode reproduction were reduced between 23% and 65%

Prognosis Stratification Tools in Early-Stage Endometrial Cancer: Could We Improve Their Accuracy?
There are three prognostic stratification tools used for endometrial cancer: ESMO-ESGO-ESTRO 2016, ProMisE, and ESGO-ESTRO-ESP 2020. However, these methods are not sufficiently accurate to address prognosis. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the integration of molecular classification and other biomarkers could be used to improve the prognosis stratification in early-stage endometrial cancer. Relapse-free and overall survival of each classifier were analyzed, and the c-index was employed to assess accuracy. Other biomarkers were explored to improve the precision of risk classifiers. We analyzed 293 patients. A comparison between the three classifiers showed an improved accuracy in ESGO-ESTRO-ESP 2020 when RFS was evaluated (c-index = 0.78), although we did not find broad differences between intermediate prognostic groups. Prognosis of these patients was better stratified with the incorporation of CTNNB1 status to the 2020 classifier (c-index 0.81), with statistically significant and clinically relevant differences in 5-year RFS: 93.9% for low risk, 79.1% for intermediate merged group/CTNNB1 wild type, and 42.7% for high risk (including patients with CTNNB1 mutation). The incorporation of molecular classification in risk stratification resulted in better discriminatory capability, which could be improved even further with the addition of CTNNB1 mutational evaluation.Peer reviewe

Apparent selective advantage of leucism in a coastal population of Southern caracaras (Falconidae)
ABSTRACT Background: Southern caracaras are medium-sized raptors with a large range stretching to the southern tip of South America. An aberrant, leucistic plumage is found commonly along the coast of Chubut Province (Patagonia, Argentina). Leucistic birds do not produce dark melanin in their feathers. However, they are not albinos because their eyes are not red. No genetic studies of caracara plumages are known. Hypothesis: The high frequency of leucistic birds in Chubut Province arises because of natural selection. Methods: Map the distribution of leucistic individuals relative to normal individuals. Combine a variety of anecdotal natural history observations, collected over 20 years, into a logical inference. Observations: Leucistic caracaras were found only along a 250-km stretch of rocky oceanic islands and continental outcrops with large seabird colonies in Chubut Province. Els treballs han estat realitzats manera individual per part dels estudiants dels grups M-3 i T-1 de l’assignatura Botànica Farmacèutica durant els mesos de febrer a maig del curs 2014-15 com a resultat final del Projecte d’Innovació Docent «Jardins per a la salut: aprenentatge servei a Botànica farmacèutica» (codi 2014PID-UB/054). Tots els treballs s’han dut a terme a través de la plataforma de GoogleDocs i han estat tutoritzats pels professors de l’assignatura. Complement component C4 structural variation and quantitative traits contribute to sex-biased vulnerability in systemic sclerosis

We investigated the association of C4 CN with systemic sclerosis (SSc) risk. Imputed total C4, C4A, C4B, and HERV-K CN were analyzed in 26,633 individuals and validated in an independent cohort. Our results showed that higher C4 CN confers protection to SSc, and deviations from CN parity of C4A and C4B augmented risk. The protection contributed per copy of C4A and C4B differed by sex. Stronger protection was afforded by C4A in men and by C4B in women. C4 CN correlated well with its gene expression and serum protein levels, and less C4 was detected for both in SSc patients. Conditioned analysis suggests that C4 genetics strongly contributes to the SSc association within the major histocompatibility complex locus and highlights classical alleles and amino acid variants of HLA-DRB1 and HLA-DPB1 as C4-independent signals
Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2
The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people.
