Understanding Infrared Galaxy Populations: the SWIRE Legacy Survey
We discuss spectral energy distributions, photometric redshifts, redshift
distributions, luminosity functions, source-counts and the far infrared to
optical luminosity ratio for sources in the SWIRE Legacy Survey. The spectral
energy distributions of selected SWIRE sources are modelled in terms of a
simple set of galaxy and quasar templates in the optical and near infrared, and
with a set of dust emission templates (cirrus, M82 starburst, Arp 220
starburst, and AGN dust torus) in the mid infrared. The optical data, together
with the IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 mu data, have been used to determine photometric
redshifts. For galaxies with known spectroscopic redshifts there is a notable
improvement in the photometric redshift when the IRAC data are used, with a
reduction in the rms scatter from 10% in (1+z) to 5%. While further
spectroscopic data are needed to confirm this result, the prospect of
determining good photometric redshifts for the 2 million extragalactic objects
in SWIRE is excellent. The distribution of the different infrared sed types in
the L{ir}/L{opt} versus L{ir} plane, where L{ir} and L{opt} are the infrared
and optical bolometric luminosities, is discussed. Source-counts at 24, 70 and

We present measurements of galaxy clustering detected in the six
SWIRE fields in all MIPS channels at 24, 70, and 160 microns. The measurements
include the low-order 2-point angular correlation functions, and high-order

Planning and community development: case studies
Planning and Comunity Development: Case Studies, presents the findings of the inter-university Seminar held on 28?29 July 2011 and organized by researchers from the Technical University of Madrid and the University of California, Berkeley, who were fortunate to have the presence of the renowned Professor John Friedmann. Professors, researchers and PhD students from our research groups presented their works as scientific communications that were enriched by the debate among the different researches who attended the Seminar. All of them appear in the picture below in front of the gate of Haviland Hall at UC Berkeley. This book analyses the concept of planning and its evolution so far, leading to the conceptualization of governance as an expression of the planning practice. It also studies the role of social capital and cooperation as tools for the community development. The conceptual analysis is complemented by the development of six case studies that put forward experiences of planning and community development carried out in diverse social and cultural contexts of Latin-America, Europe and North America. This publication comes after more than 20 years of work of the researchers that met at the seminar. Through their work in managing development initiatives, they have learned lessons and have contribute to shape their own body of teaching that develops and analyses the role of planning in public domain to promote community development. This knowledge is synthesized in the model Planning as Working With People, that shows that development is not effective unless is promoted in continuous collaboration with all the actors involved in the process
MAMBO 1.2mm observations of luminous starbursts at z~2 in the SWIRE fields
We report on--off pointed MAMBO observations at 1.2 mm of 61 Spitzer-selected
star-forming galaxies from the SWIRE survey. The sources are selected on the
basis of bright 24um fluxes (f_24um>0.4mJy) and of stellar dominated
near-infrared spectral energy distributions in order to favor z~2 starburst
galaxies. The average 1.2mm flux for the whole sample is 1.5+/-0.2 mJy. Our
analysis focuses on 29 sources in the Lockman Hole field where the average
1.2mm flux (1.9+/-0.3 mJy) is higher than in other fields (1.1+/-0.2 mJy). The
analysis of the sources multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions
indicates that they are starburst galaxies with far-infrared luminosities
~10^12-10^13.3 Lsun, and stellar masses of ~0.2-6 x10^11 M_sun. Compared to
sub-millimeter selected galaxies (SMGs), the SWIRE-MAMBO sources are among
those with the largest 24um/millimeter flux ratios. The origin of such large
ratios is investigated by comparing the average mid-infrared spectra and the
stacked far-infrared spectral energy distributions of the SWIRE-MAMBO sources
and of SMGs. The mid-infrared spectra exhibit strong PAH features, and a warm
dust continuum. The warm dust continuum contributes to ~34% of the mid-infrared
emission, and is likely associated with an AGN component. This constribution is
consistent with what is found in SMGs. The large 24um/1.2mm flux ratios are
thus not due to AGN emission, but rather to enhanced PAH emission compared to
SMGs. The analysis of the stacked far-infrared fluxes yields warmer dust
temperatures than typically observed in SMGs. Our selection favors warm
ultra-luminous infrared sources at high-z, a class of objects that is rarely
found in SMG samples. Our sample is the largest Spitzer-selected sample

Cross-protection and cross-neutralization capacity of ancestral and VOC-matched SARS-CoV-2 adenoviral vector-based vaccines
COVID-19 vaccines were originally designed based on the ancestral Spike protein, but immune escape of emergent Variants of Concern (VOC) jeopardized their efficacy, warranting variant-proof vaccines. Here, we used preclinical rodent models to establish the cross-protective and cross-neutralizing capacity of adenoviral-vectored vaccines expressing VOC-matched Spike. CoroVaxG.3-D.FR, matched to Delta Plus Spike, displayed the highest levels of nAb to the matched VOC and mismatched variants. Cross-protection against viral infection in aged K18-hACE2 mice showed dramatic differences among the different vaccines. While Delta-targeted vaccines fully protected mice from a challenge with Gamma, a Gamma-based vaccine offered only partial protection to Delta challenge. Administration of CorovaxG.3-D.FR in a prime/boost regimen showed that a booster was able to increase the neutralizing capacity of the sera against all variants and fully protect aged K18-hACE2 mice against Omicron BA.1, as a BA.1-targeted vaccine did. The neutralizing capacity of the sera diminished in all cases against Omicron BA.2 and BA.5. Altogether, the data demonstrate that a booster with a vaccine based on an antigenically distant variant, such as Delta or BA.1, has the potential to protect from a wider range of SARS-CoV-2 lineages, although careful surveillance of breakthrough infections will help to evaluate combination vaccines targeting antigenically divergent variants yet to emerge.Fil: Vinzon, Sabrina Eugenia. Photometric redshifts in the SWIRE Survey
We present the SWIRE Photometric Redshift Catalogue, 1025119 redshifts of
unprecedented reliability and accuracy. Our method is based on fixed galaxy and
QSO templates applied to data at 0.36-4.5 mu, and on a set of 4 infrared
emission templates fitted to infrared excess data at 3.6-170 mu. The code
involves two passes through the data, to try to optimize recognition of AGN
dust tori. A few carefully justified priors are used and are the key to
supression of outliers. Extinction, A_V, is allowed as a free parameter. We use
a set of 5982 spectroscopic redshifts, taken from the literature and from our
own spectroscopic surveys, to analyze the performance of our method as a
function of the number of photometric bands used in the solution and the
reduced chi^2. For 7 photometric bands the rms value of
(z_{phot}-z_{spec})/(1+z_{spec}) is 3.5%, and the percentage of catastrophic
outliers is ~1%.
We discuss the redshift distributions at 3.6 and 24 mu. In individual fields,
structure in the redshift distribution corresponds to clusters which can be
seen in the spectroscopic redshift distribution. 10% of sources in the SWIRE
photometric redshift catalogue have z >2, and 4% have z>3, so this catalogue is
a huge resource for high redshift galaxies.
A key parameter for understanding the evolutionary status of infrared
galaxies is L_{ir}/L_{opt}, which can be interpreted as the specific
star-formation rate for starbursts. For dust tori around Type 1 AGN,
L_{tor}/L_{opt} is a measure of the torus covering factor and we deduce a mean

Ingeniería Geológica en Terrenos Volcánicos. Métodos, Técnicas y Experiencias en las Islas Canarias
La presente obra es un compendio de conceptos, metodologías y técnicas útiles
para acometer proyectos y obras en terrenos volcánicos desde el punto de vista de la ingeniería geológica y la geotecnia.
El libro se presenta en tres partes diferenciadas. La primera es conceptual y
metodológica, con capítulos que tratan sobre la clasificación de las rocas volcánicas con fines geotécnicos, la caracterización geomecánica, los problemas geotécnicos y constructivos asociados a los distintos materiales, y una guía metodológica para la redacción de informes geotécnicos para la edificación. La segunda parte aborda las aplicaciones a obras de ingeniería, incluyendo deslizamientos, obras subterráneas,infraestructuras marítimas y obras públicas. La tercera parte recoge capítulos dedicados a describir distintos casos prácticos de obras y proyectos en los que la problemática geotécnica en terrenos volcánicos ha tenido un papel relevante.
Los capítulos han sido elaborados por técnicos y científicos de reconocido prestigio en el campo de la ingeniería geológica en terrenos volcánicos, que han plasmado en ellos sus conocimientos y experiencias en la materia.Los editores y autores de parte de los capítulos del libro, los Doctores Luis E. Hernández Gutiérrez (Geólogo) y Juan Carlos Santamarta Cerezal (Ingeniero de Montes, Civil y Minas), son los responsables del grupo de investigación INGENIA (Ingeniería Geológica, Innovación y Aguas).
Su actividad investigadora comprende más de 200 publicaciones en el área de la
ingeniería geológica, la geotecnia, medio ambiente y el aprovechamiento del agua
en islas y terrenos volcánicos. En relación a la docencia han impartido y dirigido
más de 90 seminarios y cursos de especialización a nivel nacional e internacional,
incluyendo la organización de 4 congresos internacionales. Fueron premiados por

e innovación universitaria, y son pioneros en los laboratorios virtuales para la

Impact of COVID-19 on cardiovascular testing in the United States versus the rest of the world
Objectives: This study sought to quantify and compare the decline in volumes of cardiovascular procedures between the United States and non-US institutions during the early phase of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the care of many non-COVID-19 illnesses. Reductions in diagnostic cardiovascular testing around the world have led to concerns over the implications of reduced testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality.
Methods: Data were submitted to the INCAPS-COVID (International Atomic Energy Agency Non-Invasive Cardiology Protocols Study of COVID-19), a multinational registry comprising 909 institutions in 108 countries (including 155 facilities in 40 U.S. states), assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. Data were obtained for April 2020 and compared with volumes of baseline procedures from March 2019. We compared laboratory characteristics, practices, and procedure volumes between U.S. and non-U.S. facilities and between U.S. geographic regions and identified factors associated with volume reduction in the United States.
Results: Reductions in the volumes of procedures in the United States were similar to those in non-U.S. facilities (68% vs. 63%, respectively; p = 0.237), although U.S. facilities reported greater reductions in invasive coronary angiography (69% vs. 53%, respectively; p < 0.001). Significantly more U.S. facilities reported increased use of telehealth and patient screening measures than non-U.S. facilities, such as temperature checks, symptom screenings, and COVID-19 testing. Reductions in volumes of procedures differed between U.S. regions, with larger declines observed in the Northeast (76%) and Midwest (74%) than in the South (62%) and West (44%). Prevalence of COVID-19, staff redeployments, outpatient centers, and urban centers were associated with greater reductions in volume in U.S. facilities in a multivariable analysis.
Conclusions: We observed marked reductions in U.S. cardiovascular testing in the early phase of the pandemic and significant variability between U.S. regions. The association between reductions of volumes and COVID-19 prevalence in the United States highlighted the need for proactive efforts to maintain access to cardiovascular testing in areas most affected by outbreaks of COVID-19 infection

Climate seasonality limits leaf carbon assimilation and wood productivity in tropical forests
The seasonal climate drivers of the carbon cycle in tropical forests remain poorly known, although these forests account for more carbon assimilation and storage than any other terrestrial ecosystem. Based on a unique combination of seasonal pan-tropical data sets from 89 experimental sites (68 include aboveground wood productivity measurements and 35 litter productivity measurements), their associated canopy photosynthetic capacity (enhanced vegetation index, EVI) and climate, we ask how carbon assimilation and aboveground allocation are related to climate seasonality in tropical forests and how they interact in the seasonal carbon cycle. We found that canopy photosynthetic capacity seasonality responds positively to precipitation when rainfall is < 2000 mm yr⁻¹ (water-limited forests) and to radiation otherwise (light-limited forests). On the other hand, independent of climate limitations, wood productivity and litterfall are driven by seasonal variation in precipitation and evapotranspiration, respectively. Consequently, light-limited forests present an asynchronism between canopy photosynthetic capacity and wood productivity. First-order control by precipitation likely indicates a decrease in tropical forest productivity in a drier climate in water-limited forest, and in current light-limited forest with future rainfall < 2000 mm yr⁻¹
Prevalence, associated factors and outcomes of pressure injuries in adult intensive care unit patients: the DecubICUs study

Epidemiologic data is however unavailable. We aimed to provide an international picture of the extent of pressure injuries and factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries in adult ICU patients. Methods: International 1-day point-prevalence study; follow-up for outcome assessment until hospital discharge (maximum 12 weeks). Factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injury and hospital mortality were assessed by generalised linear mixed-effects regression analysis. Results: Data from 13,254 patients in 1117 ICUs (90 countries) revealed 6747 pressure injuries; 3997 (59.2%) were ICU-acquired. Overall prevalence was 26.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 25.9–27.3). ICU-acquired prevalence was 16.2% (95% CI 15.6–16.8). Sacrum (37%) and heels (19.5%) were most affected. Factors independently associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries were older age, male sex, being underweight, emergency surgery, higher Simplified Acute Physiology Score II, Braden score 3 days, comorbidities (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, immunodeficiency), organ support (renal replacement, mechanical ventilation on ICU admission), and being in a low or lower-middle income-economy. Gradually increasing associations with mortality were identified for increasing severity of pressure injury: stage I (odds ratio [OR] 1.5; 95% CI 1.2–1.8), stage II (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.4–1.9), and stage III or worse (OR 2.8; 95% CI 2.3–3.3). Conclusion: Pressure injuries are common in adult ICU patients. ICU-acquired pressure injuries are associated with mainly intrinsic factors and mortality. Optimal care standards, increased awareness, appropriate resource allocation, and further research into optimal prevention are pivotal to tackle this important patient safety threat
