    Contemporaneous broad-band photometry and Hα\alpha observations of T Tauri stars

    The study of contemporaneous variations of the continuum flux and emission lines is of great importance to understand the different astrophysical processes at work in T Tauri stars. In this paper we present the results of a simultaneous BVRIBVRI and Hα\alpha photometric monitoring, contemporaneous to medium-resolution spectroscopy of six T Tauri stars in the Taurus-Auriga star forming region. We have characterized the Hα\alpha photometric system using synthetic templates and the contemporaneous spectra of the targets. We show that we can achieve a precision corresponding to 2−-3 \AA\ in the Hα\alpha equivalent width, in typical observing conditions. The spectral analysis has allowed us to determine the basic stellar parameters and the values of quantities related to the accretion. In particular, we have measured a significant veiling only for the three targets with the strongest Hα\alpha emission (T Tau, FM Tau, and DG Tau). The broad-band photometric variations are found to be in the range 0.05−-0.70 mag and are often paired to variations in the Hα\alpha intensity, which becomes stronger when the stellar continuum is weaker. In addition, we have mostly observed a redder V−IV-I and a bluer B−VB-V color as the stars become fainter. For most of the targets, the timescales of these variations seem to be longer than the rotation period. One exception is T Tau, for which the broad-band photometry varies with the rotation period. The most plausible interpretation of these photometric and Hα\alpha variations is that they are due to non-stationary mass accretion onto the stars, but rotational modulation can play a major role in some cases.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Acta Astronomic

    Crossing the Gould Belt in the Orion vicinity

    We present a study of the large-scale spatial distribution of 6482 RASS X-ray sources in approximately 5000 deg^2 in the direction of Orion. We examine the astrophysical properties of a sub-sample of ~100 optical counterparts, using optical spectroscopy. This sub-sample is used to investigate the space density of the RASS young star candidates by comparing X-ray number counts with Galactic model predictions. We characterize the observed sub-sample in terms of spectral type, lithium content, radial and rotational velocities, as well as iron abundance. A population synthesis model is then applied to analyze the stellar content of the RASS in the studied area. We find that stars associated with the Orion star-forming region do show a high lithium content. A population of late-type stars with lithium equivalent widths larger than Pleiades stars of the same spectral type (hence younger than ~70-100 Myr) is found widely spread over the studied area. Two new young stellar aggregates, namely "X-ray Clump 0534+22" (age~2-10 Myr) and "X-ray Clump 0430-08" (age~2-20 Myr), are also identified. The spectroscopic follow-up and comparison with Galactic model predictions reveal that the X-ray selected stellar population in the direction of Orion is characterized by three distinct components, namely the clustered, the young dispersed, and the widespread field populations. The clustered population is mainly associated with regions of recent or ongoing star formation and correlates spatially with molecular clouds. The dispersed young population follows a broad lane apparently coinciding spatially with the Gould Belt, while the widespread population consists primarily of active field stars older than 100 Myr. We expect the "bi-dimensional" picture emerging from this study to grow in depth as soon as the distance and the kinematics of the studied sources will become available from the future Gaia mission.Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables.     Glutathione metabolism is essential for self-renewal and chemoresistance of pancreatic cancer stem cells

    BACKGROUND Cellular metabolism regulates stemness in health and disease. A reduced redox state is essential for self-renewal of normal and cancer stem cells (CSCs). However, while stem cells rely on glycolysis, different CSCs, including pancreatic CSCs, favor mitochondrial metabolism as their dominant energy-producing pathway. This suggests that powerful antioxidant networks must be in place to detoxify mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) and maintain stemness in oxidative CSCs. Since glutathione metabolism is critical for normal stem cell function and CSCs from breast, liver and gastric cancer show increased glutathione content, we hypothesized that pancreatic CSCs also rely on this pathway for ROS detoxification. AIM To investigate the role of glutathione metabolism in pancreatic CSCs. METHODS Primary pancreatic cancer cells of patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) were cultured in adherent or CSC-enriching sphere conditions to determine the role of glutathione metabolism in stemness. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to validate RNAseq results involving glutathione metabolism genes in adherent vs spheres, as well as the expression of pluripotency-related genes following treatment. Public TCGA and GTEx RNAseq data from pancreatic cancer vs normal tissue samples were analyzed using the webserver GEPIA2. The glutathione-sensitive fluorescent probe monochlorobimane was used to determine glutathione content by fluorimetry or flow cytometry. Pharmacological inhibitors of glutathione synthesis and recycling [buthionine-sulfoximine (BSO) and 6-Aminonicotinamide (6-AN), respectively] were used to investigate the impact of glutathione depletion on CSC-enriched cultures. Staining with propidium iodide (cell cycle), Annexin-V (apoptosis) and CD133 (CSC content) were determined by flow cytometry. Self-renewal was assessed by sphere formation assay and response to gemcitabine treatment was used as a readout for chemoresistance. RESULTS Analysis of our previously published RNAseq dataset E-MTAB-3808 revealed up-regulation of genes involved in the KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) Pathway Glutathione Metabolism in CSC-enriched cultures compared to their differentiated counterparts. Consistently, in pancreatic cancer patient samples the expression of most of these up-regulated genes positively correlated with a stemness signature defined by NANOG, KLF4, SOX2 and OCT4 expression (P < 10-5). Moreover, 3 of the upregulated genes (MGST1, GPX8, GCCT) were associated with reduced disease-free survival in patients [Hazard ratio (HR) 2.2-2.5; P = 0.03-0.0054], suggesting a critical role for this pathway in pancreatic cancer progression. CSC-enriched sphere cultures also showed increased expression of different glutathione metabolism-related genes, as well as enhanced glutathione content in its reduced form (GSH). Glutathione depletion with BSO induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in spheres, and diminished the expression of stemness genes. Moreover, treatment with either BSO or the glutathione recycling inhibitor 6-AN inhibited self-renewal and the expression of the CSC marker CD133. GSH content in spheres positively correlated with intrinsic resistance to gemcitabine treatment in different PDXs r = 0.96, P = 5.8 × 1011). Additionally, CD133+ cells accumulated GSH in response to gemcitabine, which was abrogated by BSO treatment (P < 0.05). Combined treatment with BSO and gemcitabine-induced apoptosis in CD133+ cells to levels comparable to CD133- cells and significantly diminished self-renewal (P < 0.05), suggesting that chemoresistance of CSCs is partially dependent on GSH metabolism. CONCLUSION Our data suggest that pancreatic CSCs depend on glutathione metabolism. Pharmacological targeting of this pathway showed that high GSH content is essential to maintain CSC functionality in terms of self-renewal and chemoresistance

    We investigate the coherent dynamics of carriers in semiconductor superlattices driven by ac-dc electric fields. We solve numerically the time-dependent effective-mass equation for the envelope function.     El hallazgo de unos restos de micromamiferos en las proximidades del Colegio La Salle de Teruel permite datar la formación de las arcillas rojas conocida con 10s nombres de "Los Monotos", "Formación de Los Tejares" y "Pera1 Formation". La ausencia casi total de fósiles ha hecho que la edad de esa formación fuera largamente discutida. Los fósiles recientemente encontrados permiten atribuirle una edad vallesiense (MN 10 basal). La fauna recogida comprende: Galerix (Parasorex) socialis, Crusafontina excultus, Hispanomys peralensis, Progonomys hispanicus, P. cathalai y Prolagus crusafonti, que se Gade a la de Tetralophodon longirostris, e Hippmion sp

    Accretion-ejection connection in the young brown dwarf candidate ISO-Cha1 217

    As the number of observed brown dwarf outflows is growing it is important to investigate how these outflows compare to the well studied jets from young stellar objects. A key point of comparison is the relationship between outflow and accretion activity and in particular the ratio between the mass outflow and accretion rates (M˙out\dot{M}_{out}/M˙acc\dot{M}_{acc}). The brown dwarf candidate ISO-ChaI 217 was discovered by our group, as part of a spectro-astrometric study of brown dwarfs, to be driving an asymmetric outflow with the blue-shifted lobe having a position angle of ∼\sim 20∘^{\circ}. The aim here is to further investigate the properties of ISO-ChaI 217, the morphology and kinematics of its outflow, and to better constrain (M˙out\dot{M}_{out}/M˙acc\dot{M}_{acc}). The outflow is spatially resolved in the [SII]λλ6716,6731[SII]\lambda \lambda 6716,6731 lines and is detected out to ∼\sim 1\farcs6 in the blue-shifted lobe and ~ 1" in the red-shifted lobe. The asymmetry between the two lobes is confirmed although the velocity asymmetry is less pronounced with respect to our previous study. Using thirteen different accretion tracers we measure log(M˙acc\dot{M}_{acc}) [Msun_{sun}/yr]= -10.6 ±\pm 0.4. As it was not possible to measure the effect of extinction on the ISO-ChaI 217 outflow M˙out\dot{M}_{out} was derived for a range of values of Av_{v}, up to a value of Av_{v} = 2.5 mag estimated for the source extinction. The logarithm of the mass outflow (M˙out\dot{M}_{out}) was estimated in the range -11.7 to -11.1 for both jets combined. Thus M˙out\dot{M}_{out}/M˙acc\dot{M}_{acc} [\Msun/yr] lies below the maximum value predicted by magneto-centrifugal jet launching models. Finally, both model fitting of the Balmer decrements and spectro-astrometric analysis of the Hα\alpha line show that the bulk of the H I emission comes from the accretion flow.Comment: accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysic

    La eficacia reproductiva en el vacuno depende, entre otros parámetros, del intervalo entre partos. Esta variable está considerada una de las más importantes para la rentabilidad de la explotación en el caso del vacuno de carne en régimen extensivo. En este trabajo se estudia la influencia de distintos factores sobre el intervalo entre partos en la raza retinta mediante el análisis de 7356 partos de 1803 vacas pertenecientes al Núcleo de Control de Rendimientos de la Asociación de Ganaderos de esta raza. Nuestros resultados muestran que este parámetro se ve afectado principalmente por la ganadería, la campaña ganadera, época, sus interacciones y el tipo de parto, no existiendo relación significativa entre este período y el peso al destete de los terneros El valor medio obtenido para todo el intervalo analizado ha sido de 16,144 ± 0,086 meses y la heredabilidad estimada para este carácter fue de 0,1104 ± 0,08
