Refinement criteria for high fidelity interactive walkthroughs

Physically based global illumination rendering at interactive frame rates would enable users to navigate within complex virtual environments, such as archaeological models. These algorithms, however, are computationally too demanding to allow interactive navigation on current PCs. A technique based on image subsampling and spatiotemporal coherence among successive frames is exploited, while resorting to progressive refinement whenever there is available computing power. A physically based ray tracer (Radiance) is used to compute reflected radiance at the model's triangles vertices. Progressive refinement is achieved increasing the sampling frequency by subdividing certain triangles and requesting shading information for the resulting vertices. This paper proposes and evaluates different criteria for selecting which triangles to subdivide. A random criterium and two criteria based on Normalized Luminance Differences are evaluated: one operating on image space, the other on object space. Results, obtained with a model of an old roman town, show that the object space criterium is able to locate and represent visual discontinuities, such as shadows, and does so requiring less triangle subdivisions than the other two.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - POSI/CHS/42041/2001

La educación en la contemporaneidad: entre la emancipación y el retroceso

Desde o projeto da modernidade, criou-se a expetativa do poder libertador da educação, na lógica do progresso civilizacional, em que as conquistas da escolarização poderiam libertar o sujeito do obscurantismo, da ignorância e dos poderes políticos alienantes. Este artigo reflete sobre o par emancipação-retrocesso no âmbito do discurso educacional contemporâneo e discute se hoje faz sentido afirmar que a educação pode ainda emancipar. Parte, assim, de uma perspetiva crítica de emancipação, reflete sobre o perigo do retrocesso no contexto da pós-modernidade e, sob o signo da esperança, coloca um conjunto de interrogações e reflexões críticas, concluindo que o par emancipação-retrocesso, inserido em uma perspetiva evolutiva, expressa um tempo de mudança na reconfiguração do par emancipação-alienação.The project of modernity raised the expectation of education’s liberating power, following the logic of civilization progress. In this project, school’s achievements may liberate the individual from obscurantism and ignorance, as well as from alienating political powers. This article discusses the pair ‘emancipation-retrogression’ in the contemporary educational discourse. It also questions the meaning of the claim that education is still able to emancipate. The argument present in this article starts from a critical perspective of emancipation; proceeds with the analysis of the danger of retrogression in the frame of post-modernity, and under the sign of hope, raises questions and critical reflections, concluding that the pair ‘emancipation-retrogression’ expresses a time of change in the reconfiguration of the pair ‘emancipation-alienation’ within an evolutionary perspective.Desde el proyecto de la modernidad se creó la expectativa del poder libertador de la educación, de la lógica en el progreso de la civilización, en el que las conquistas de la escolarización podrían liberar al sujeto del oscurantismo, la ignorancia y los alienantes poderes políticos. Este artículo se profundiza en el binomio emancipación-retroceso en el ámbito del discurso educativo contemporáneo y se pregunta si, en los tiempos que corren, hay sentido afirmar que la educación es una herramienta de emancipación. Se parte, así, de una perspectiva crítica de emancipación, subrayando el peligro de retroceder en el contexto posmoderno y, bajo el signo de la esperanza, formulase una serie de interrogantes y reflexiones críticas. DINÂMICA FLUVIAL DO RIO AMAZONAS NO TRECHO ENTRE A ILHA DO CAREIRO E A COSTA DO VARRE VENTO

O resumo apresenta uma análise da dinâmica fluvial presente no rio Amazonas, entre a Ilha do Careiro e a Costa do Varre Vento, e como este processo pode vir a comprometer o transporte de grande calado em períodos extremos de vazante. O trabalho é resultado de pesquisas no Mestrado do Programa de Pós-graduação em Geografia da UFAM e objetiva analisar o rio Amazonas, no trecho proposto, no que diz respeito à formação de bancos arenosos e suas implicações ao transporte de grande calado em eventos extremos. A terminologia em manuais de equipamentos médicos de UTIs: relatos de uma pesquisa terminológica na área da Engenharia Biomédica

Abstract: This article reports our research that aimed to analyze the terminology of medical equipment used in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). For this analysis, we used as corpora the official equipment manuals registered by the manufacturers at Anvisa. The theoretical approach used to collect and study the terminological data was the Communicative Theory of Terminology (TCT). This approach establishes procedures for conducting descriptive research in Terminology, considering its context of use, the target audience, terminological variations, and the polyhedral character of the term. After selecting the medical specialty (intensive care) and surveying the standards in force in Brazil for this area, we reached, together with specialists in the field, twenty-five essential medical equipment for the installation of an ICU in a health institution. As a result, it was possible to observe that some devices have well-defined terminology, while others have variants that compete and may lead to conceptual errors. In this article, we present detailed aspects of two groups of concepts that refer to some ICU medical equipment used during the COVID-19 pandemic, which confirm the complexity and need for more work related to the harmonization of this terminology.   Keywords: Terminology; Medical Equipment, Intensive Care Unit.Este artigo relata uma pesquisa que teve como objetivo geral analisar a terminologia de equipamentos médicos utilizados nas Unidades de Terapia Intensiva (UTIs). Para essa análise, foram utilizados como corpora os manuais oficiais de equipamentos registrados pelos fabricantes na Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (ANVISA). A abordagem teórica utilizada para a recolha e para a análise dos dados terminológicos foi a Teoria Comunicativa da Terminologia (TCT), que estabelece procedimentos para a realização de uma pesquisa descritiva em Terminologia, considerando seu contexto de uso, o público-alvo, as variações terminológicas e o caráter poliédrico do termo. Após o recorte da especialidade médica (terapia intensiva) e do levantamento das normas vigentes no Brasil para essa área, foram definidos, com o apoio de especialistas, 25 equipamentos médicos essenciais para a instalação de uma UTI em uma instituição de saúde. Como resultado da pesquisa, foi possível observar que enquanto alguns equipamentos têm terminologia bem definida, outros apresentam variantes que concorrem entre si e que podem até induzir a erros conceituais e referenciais. Neste artigo, especificamente, são apresentadas discussões sobre dois grupos de conceitos bastante utilizados durante a pandemia da COVID-19: os ventiladores pulmonares e as câmaras para conservação de medicamentos. Os relatos desses casos demonstram a complexidade e a necessidade de mais trabalhos relacionados à harmonização da terminologia dos equipamentos e dos produtos para saúde.  Palavras-chave: terminologia; equipamentos médicos; Unidade de Terapia Intensiva.

Soil organic matter as a function of nitrogen fertilization in crop successions

A interdependência dos ciclos de C e N reflete-se nos teores de matéria orgânica do solo (MOS). Em um delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, com parcelas sub-subdivididas, tendo como tratamento principal cinco doses de nitrogênio de cobertura na cultura do milho (0; 60; 120; 180 e 240 kg ha-1 de N), como tratamento secundário, as sucessões milho-milho e soja-milho, e como sub-subtratamento, duas profundidades de amostragem (0 a 0.2 e 0.2 a 0.4 cm), avaliaram-se os teores de MOS e de C orgânico nas frações solúvel em água (C-SA), ácidos húmicos (C-AH), ácidos fúlvicos (C-AF) e humina (C-H), por meio do método clássico de fracionamento químico, em um Latossolo Vermelho eutrófico, de textura argilosa. A adubação nitrogenada não afetou os teores de MOS, mas favoreceu a síntese de compostos da fração C-AH. Houve efeito quadrático das doses de N nos teores de C-SA e de C-AF na sucessão milho-milho. A sucessão soja-milho resultou em maiores teores de MOS e de C orgânico na fração humina.The interdependence between the C and N cycles is reflected by the levels of soil organic matter (SOM). SOM and organic C levels in water soluble (C-WS) humic acids (C-HA), fulvic acids (C-FA), and humin fractions (C-H) were evaluated through the classic chemical fractionation method in samples of a Rhodic Eutrudox from a randomized blocks experimental design, with split-split-plots using five nitrogen sidedressing levels for corn (0; 60; 120; 180; and 240 kg ha-1 N) as the main treatment, two crop sequences (corn-corn and soybean-corn) as the secondary treatment, and two sampling depths (0 to 0.2 and 0.2 to 0.4 m) as a sub-subtreatment. Nitrogen fertilization did not affect SOM levels, but favored the synthesis of substances in the C-HA fraction. There was a quadratic effect of N rates on the C-WS and C-FA levels in the corn-corn succession. The soybean-corn succession resulted in larger SOM and organic C levels in the C-H fraction

Consolidação do diálogo entre Arquivologia, Biblioteconomia, Museologia e Ciência da Informação: a contribuição brasileira.

Objective. To present the contributions of the research group based at the School of Information Science, Federal University of Minas Gerais, named “Approaches and possible dialogues between Information Science and the areas of Archival Science, Library Science and Museum Studies” to consolidate the problem. Design/Methodology/Approach. We present the discussions made from the productions of the members of this group, showing the elements capable of supporting an epistemological view and the processes of an interdisciplinary dialogue. Results/Discusion. There are several historical, institutional and theoretical elements that have the potential for dialogue, such as concepts, themes, professional and educational challenges in each of them. Conclusions. There is some immaturity in the conditions of dialogue between the three areas, and even more so with the information science. The idea that the foundation is in belonging to the field of social sciences seems to point the way to the realization of possibilities. Originality/Value. The text points to the construction of a reflective space beyond the specificity of each one of the areas, demonstrating the possible dialogues and convergences between them

Standardized Outcomes Measures in Physical Therapy Practice for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Cerebral PALSY: A Systematic Review

Cerebral palsy (CP) treatment includes physical therapy and various complementary therapies to the standard clinical treatment. However, there are not many reviews that focus on the methods used and evaluation procedures. This study aims to analyze which tools are most suitable for the evaluation and methodology of patients with CP treated with physical therapy. Following the PRISMA statement, through a PICOS strategy, PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science (WOS), Scopus, Science Direct, and Scielo were searched with the following terms: cerebral palsy AND (physical therapy modalities OR therapeutics) AND outcome assessment. The methodological quality of the RCTs was assessed with the Evidence Project risk of bias tool. Thirty-seven RCTs and six RCT protocols, comprising 1359 participants with different types of CP: spastic hemiplegia/paresis, spastic diplegia/paresis, and spastic CP, met the inclusion criteria, uncovering 21 variables measured through 77 different instruments and several interventions. The therapies most widely used in CP are gaming or technology-assisted therapies, aerobic training, hippotherapy, music therapy, gait training, and aquatic exercises. This study provides an overview of what the authors used in the neurorehabilitation field through procedure evaluation and checking the technological advance that began to be used
