    Bryuno Function and the Standard Map

    For the standard map the homotopically non-trivial invariant curves of rotation number satisfying the Bryuno condition are shown to be analytic in the perturbative parameter, provided the latter is small enough. The radius of convergence of the Lindstedt series -- sometimes called critical function of the standard map -- is studied and the relation with the Bryuno function is derived: the logarithm of the radius of convergence plus twice the Bryuno function is proved to be bounded (from below and from above) uniformily in the rotation number.Comment: 120 K, Latex, 33 page

    Gallbladder cancer: South American experience

    Large differences in terms of incidence and mortality due to gallbladder cancer (GBC) have been reported worldwide. Moreover, it seems that GBC has unique characteristics in South America. We surveyed the literature looking for information about the epidemiology, basic and translational research, and clinical trials performed in South America in order to critically analyze the magnitude of this health problem in the region. Compared to other geographic areas, age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) for GBC in women are very high, particularly in many western areas of South America. Genetic, as well as dietary and environmental factors likely contribute to the pathogenesis of this disease in the area. Compared to other regions the profile of abnormalities of key genes such as KRAS and TP53 in GBC seems to slightly differ in South America, while the clinical behavior appears to be similar with a median overall survival (OS) of 6.5 to 8 months in advanced GBC. In contrast to Europe and USA, prophylactic cholecystectomy is a common practice in western areas of South America. GBC particularly affects women in South America, and represents a significant public health problem. It appears to have peculiarities that pose an urgent need for additional research aimed to discover risk factors, molecular events associated with its development and new treatment options for this lethal disease.Fil: Arroyo, Gerardo F..     Delay and Cooperation in Nonstochastic Bandits

    We study networks of communicating learning agents that cooperate to solve a common nonstochastic bandit problem. Agents use an underlying communication network to get messages about actions selected by other agents, and drop messages that took more than dd hops to arrive, where dd is a delay parameter. We introduce \textsc{Exp3-Coop}, a cooperative version of the {\sc Exp3} algorithm and prove that with KK actions and NN agents the average per-agent regret after TT rounds is at most of order (d+1+KNαd)(TlnK)\sqrt{\bigl(d+1 + \tfrac{K}{N}\alpha_{\le d}\bigr)(T\ln K)}, where αd\alpha_{\le d} is the independence number of the dd-th power of the connected communication graph GG. We then show that for any connected graph, for d=Kd=\sqrt{K} the regret bound is K1/4TK^{1/4}\sqrt{T}, strictly better than the minimax regret KT\sqrt{KT} for noncooperating agents. More informed choices of dd lead to bounds which are arbitrarily close to the full information minimax regret TlnK\sqrt{T\ln K} when GG is dense. When GG has sparse components, we show that a variant of \textsc{Exp3-Coop}, allowing agents to choose their parameters according to their centrality in GG, strictly improves the regret. Finally, as a by-product of our analysis, we provide the first characterization of the minimax regret for bandit learning with delay.Comment: 30 page

    An Orchestration Method for Integrated Multi-Disciplinary Simulation in Digital Twin Applications

    In recent years, the methodology of Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) has become relevant to the design of complex products, especially when safety critical systems need to be addressed. It allows, in fact, the deployment of product development directly through some digital models, allowing an effective traceability of requirements, being allocated upon the system functions, components, and parts. This approach enhances the designer capabilities in controlling the product development, manufacturing and after-market services. However, the application of such a methodology requires overcoming several technological barriers, especially in terms of models integration. The interoperability and management of several models—developed within different software to cover multiple levels of detail across several technical disciplines—is still very difficult, despite the level of maturation achieved by Systems Engineering. This paper describes a possible approach to provide such a connection between tools to allow a complete multi-disciplinary and heterogeneous simulation to analyse complex systems, such as safety-critical ones, which are typical of aerospace applications. Such an application is within a defined industrial context, placing particular attention on the compatibility of the approach with the legacy processes and tool

    Silvering process of female European eel in the north Adriatic: Who is really ready to migrate?

    During the 1970s and 2010, the population of Anguilla anguilla declined significantly, and the species is now classified as a critically endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Considering its social, economic, and ecological importance, it is necessary to understand the biological mechanism that controls population dynamics, in particular the passage from the resident phase to the migratory phase. During this phase of their life cycle, the environment plays a key role in the maturation of the spawners which will eventually undertake a long spawning migration to the Sargasso Sea. An assessment of the morphological characteristics of eels during their silvering process and reproductive activity was conducted by collecting 1513 female eels from seven lagoons in the North Adriatic Sea. Morphometric analyses show that eels classified as pre-migratory according to the Silver Index are histologically (65% of eels with oocytes in the most advanced stage of development) and morphologically ready to migrate. Accordingly, pre-migrant eels treated with hormone induction performed similarly to migrant eels. They mated and spawned spontaneously in the tank with a percentage of 81.0%, and 88.2% of them produced viable eggs. The results showed how the North Adriatic lagoons could present favourable conditions that permit the fast development of females with high reproductive potential. This data can be used to develop successful strategies to conserve and manage eel populations

    A comprehensive CFD model for the biomass pyrolysis

    The present work addresses the study of the pyrolysis of biomass particle, with the aim to improve the comprehensive mathematical model of the thermochemical processes involving solids decomposition. A new CFD model for the biomass pyrolysis was developed at the particle scale in order to properly describe the relative role of reaction kinetics and transport phenomena. The model is able to solve the Navier-Stokes equations for both the gas and solid porous phase. The code employs the open-source OpenFOAM® framework to effectively manage the computational meshes and the discretization of fundamental governing equations. The mathematical algorithm is based on the PIMPLE method for transient solver and exploit the operator-splitting technique that allows the separation of the transport and the reactive term in order to handle complex computational geometries minimizing the computational effort. The model was tested with experimental data for both reactive and non-reactive conditions. The code is able to provide correct information about temperature distribution within the particle, gas, tar and char formation rates

    Biological Control of the Chagas Disease Vector Triatoma infestans with the Entomopathogenic Fungus Beauveria bassiana Combined with an Aggregation Cue: Field, Laboratory and Mathematical Modeling Assessment

    Background: Current Chagas disease vector control strategies, based on chemical insecticide spraying, are growingly threatened by the emergence of pyrethroid-resistant Triatoma infestans populations in the Gran Chaco region of South America. Methodology and findings: We have already shown that the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana has the ability to breach the insect cuticle and is effective both against pyrethroid-susceptible and pyrethroid-resistant T. infestans, in laboratory as well as field assays. It is also known that T. infestans cuticle lipids play a major role as contact aggregation pheromones. We estimated the effectiveness of pheromonebased infection boxes containing B. bassiana spores to kill indoor bugs, and its effect on the vector population dynamics. Laboratory assays were performed to estimate the effect of fungal infection on female reproductive parameters. The effect of insect exuviae as an aggregation signal in the performance of the infection boxes was estimated both in the laboratory and in the field. We developed a stage-specific matrix model of T. infestans to describe the fungal infection effects on insect population dynamics, and to analyze the performance of the biopesticide device in vector biological control. Conclusions: The pheromone-containing infective box is a promising new tool against indoor populations of this Chagas disease vector, with the number of boxes per house being the main driver of the reduction of the total domestic bug population. This ecologically safe approach is the first proven alternative to chemical insecticides in the control of T. infestans. The advantageous reduction in vector population by delayedaction fungal biopesticides in a contained environment is here shown supported by mathematical modeling.Fil: Forlani, Lucas.     The importance of the postmortem interval for the diagnosis of Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome by Neisseria meningitidis in a series of forensic cases

    The effective value of microbiological post-mortem examinations stands as fundamental in forensic cases involving microbiology. We ran these analyses on five victims, who suddenly died after showing persistent fever. The examinations were conducted between 48 hours and 10 days after death, and adrenal gland apoplexy was detected in all the cases. Microbiological examinations identified Neisseria meningitidis, which was accountable for Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome. Diplococci were isolated from three cadavers that underwent forensic dissection between 2 and 3 days after death. The remaining two cadavers showed polymicrobial contamination, and a polymerase chain reaction technique was necessary to identify the pathogen. We assumed that the microbial overlap could lead to diagnostic mistakes and conceal the identification of the lethal pathogen. Therefore, we suggest using molecular techniques for a postmortem interval (PMI) longer than 72 hours. Classical microbiological examination should be performed for PMI within 72 hours
