    Local Structure and Spin Transition in Fe2O3 Hematite at High-Pressure

    The pressure evolution of the local structure of Fe2O3 hematite has been determined for the first time by extended x-ray absorption fine structure up to 79 GPa. The comparison to the different high-pressure forms proposed in the literature suggests that the orthorhombic structure with space group Aba2 is the most probable. The crossover from Fe high-spin to low-spin states with pressure increase has been monitored from the pre-edge region of the Fe K-edge absorption spectra. The "simultaneous" comparison with the local structural changes allows us to definitively conclude that it is the electronic transition that drives the structural transition and not viceversa

    Low temperature deactivation of Ge heavily n-type doped by ion implantation and laser thermal annealing

    International audienceHeavy doping of Ge is crucial for several advanced micro-and optoelectronic applications, but, at the same time, it still remains extremely challenging. Ge heavily n-type doped at a concentration of 1 X 10(20) cm(-3) by As ion implantation and melting laser thermal annealing (LTA) is shown here to be highly metastable. Upon post-LTA conventional thermal annealing As electrically deactivates already at 350 degrees C reaching an active concentration of similar to 4 x 10(19) cm(-3). No significant As diffusion is detected up to 450 degrees C, where the As activation decreases further to similar to 3 x 10(19) cm(-3). The reason for the observed detrimental deactivation was investigated by Atom Probe Tomography and in situ High Resolution X-Ray Diffraction measurements. In general, the thermal stability of heavily doped Ge layers needs to be carefully evaluated because, as shown here, deactivation might occur at very low temperatures, close to those required for low resistivity Ohmic contacting of n-type Ge

    Role of fluorine in suppressing boron transient enhanced diffusion in preamorphized Si

    We have explained the role of fluorine in the reduction of the self-interstitial population in a preamorphized Si layer under thermal treatment. For this purpose, we have employed a B spike layer grown by molecular-beam epitaxy as a marker for the self-interstitial local concentration. The amorphized samples were implanted with 731012, 731013, or 431014 F/cm2 at 100 keV, and afterwards recrystallized by solid phase epitaxy. Thermal anneals at 750 or 850 °C were performed in order to induce the release of self-interstitials from the end-of-range (EOR) defects and thus provoke the transient enhanced diffusion of B atoms. We have shown that the incorporation of F reduces the B enhanced diffusion in a controlled way, up to its complete suppression. It is seen that no direct interaction between B and F occurs, whereas the suppression of B enhanced diffusion is related to the F ability in reducing the excess of silicon self-interstitials emitted by the EOR source.     Nowadays, many examples of data acquisition (DAQ) software for experimental nuclear physics are monolithic processes that run on a computer attached to the DAQ hardware. In this article we present a distributed DAQ system developed for the C-BORD project. With our system, we propose a novel approach, in which each task related to the different DAQ parts (acquisition, pre-process, analysis, etc.) runs in a separate process. In particular, the system is composed of a set of servers that exchange information through dedicated communication sockets. Therefore, with this architecture, an important advantage is the possibility to run the processes on different computers to distribute the computational load. The initial tests of the system have been giving excellent results, both in terms of performance (i.e., maximum acquisition rates) and stability. The project entitled "Effective container inspection at BORDer control points" (C-BORD) is funded by the European H2020 programme. Its aim is to develop a comprehensive set of technologies for the generalized non-intrusive inspection (NII) of containers and large-volume freight at the European Union border

    Comparative results on collimation of the SPS beam of protons and Pb ions with bent crystals

    New experiments on crystal assisted collimation have been carried out at the CERN SPS with stored beams of 120 GeV/. c protons and Pb ions. Bent silicon crystals of 2 mm long with about 170 μrad bend angle and a small residual torsion were used as primary collimators. In channeling conditions, the beam loss rate induced by inelastic interactions of particles with the crystal nuclei is minimal. The loss reduction was about 6 for protons and about 3 for Pb ions. Lower reduction value for Pb ions can be explained by their considerably larger ionization losses in the crystal. In one of the crystals, the measured fraction of the Pb ion beam halo deflected in channeling conditions was 74%, a value very close to that for protons. The intensity of the off-momentum halo leaking out from the collimation station was measured in the first high dispersion area downstream. The particle population in the shadow of the secondary collimator-absorber was considerably smaller in channeling conditions than for amorphous orientations of the crystal. The corresponding reduction was in the range of 2-5 for both protons and Pb ions.peer-reviewe

    Observation of parametric X-rays produced by 400 GeV/c protons in bent crystals

    Spectral maxima of parametric X-ray radiation (PXR) produced by 400 GeV/c protons in bent silicon crystals aligned with the beam have been observed in an experiment at the H8 external beam of the CERN SPS. The total yield of PXR photons was about 10-6 per proton. Agreement between calculations and the experimental data shows that the PXR kinematic theory is valid for bent crystals with sufficiently small curvature as used in the experiment. The intensity of PXR emitted from halo protons in a bent crystal used as a primary collimator in a circular accelerator may be considered as a possible tool to control its crystal structure, which is slowly damaged because of irradiation. The intensity distribution of PXR peaks depends on the crystal thickness intersected by the beam, which changes for different orientations of a crystal collimator. This dependence may be used to control crystal collimator alignment by analyzing PXR spectra produced by halo protons.peer-reviewe
