open6noAim of this study was to review the institutional experience of solid-pseudopapillary tumors of the pancreas with particular attention to the problems of preoperative diagnosis and treatment. From 1997 to 2013, SPT was diagnosed in 18 patients among 451 pancreatic cystic neoplasms (3.7%). All patients underwent preoperative abdominal ultrasound, computed assisted tomography, and tumor markers (CEA and CA 19-9) determinations. In some instances, magnetic resonance, positron emission tomography, and endoscopic ultrasound with aspiration cytology were performed. There were two males and 16 females. Serum CA 19-9 was slightly elevated in one case. Preoperative diagnosis was neuroendocrine tumor (n = 2), mucinous tumor (n = 2), and SPT (n = 14). Two patients underwent previous operation before referral to our department: one explorative laparotomy and one enucleation of SPT resulting in surgical margins involvement. All patients underwent pancreatic resection associated with portal vein resection (n = 1) or liver metastases (n = 1). One patient died of metastatic disease, 77 months after operation, and 17 are alive and free with a median survival time of 81.5 months (range 36-228 months). Most of SPT can be diagnosed by CT or MRI, and the role of other diagnostic tools is very limited. We lack sufficient information regarding clinicopathologic features predicting prognosis. Caution is needed when performing limited resection, and long and careful follow-up is required for all patients after surgery.openBeltrame, Valentina; Pozza, Gioia; Dalla Bona, Enrico; Fantin, Alberto; Valmasoni, Michele; Sperti, CosimoBeltrame, Valentina; Pozza, Gioia; DALLA BONA, Enrico; Fantin, Alberto; Valmasoni, Michele; Sperti, Cosim

This document consists of the culmination of research carried out under the co-supervision of the University of Udine and the University Paris Ouest Nanterre La Dnse, in accordance with the respective doctoral schools of Audiovisual Studies. The focal point of this research lays in the creation and analysis of the archives of Yves Kovacs. These developed at the Cin\ue9math\ue8que fran\ue7aise, paying particular attention to the critique and cin\ue9philie between the fifties and the sixties and of the individual responsible for this collection. Through theses archives, we have sought to deepen the question of the auteur, which structures the thinking process of a certain part of the French critique of the fifties, this being a cin\ue9phile formation phase for Kovacs. This thesis presents itself as the culmination, on one side, of an archiving effort in the strict sense of the word (physical and intellectual handling of the archive, from the inventory to the disposition of the archive), and on the other side, a study about Yves Kovacs at the time of his cin\ue9phile youth, shared between the specialized critique and the first collaborations on film and TV sets. In this way, the analysis of an archive moves to the level of the context of the origin, of the study of the man that constituted it and ultimately, for the same reasons that lead us to be interested in it. All of this in line with the idea that an archive is not only the place to find documents and information, but also a representation, in its very existence, a manifestation of different practices, ideas and needs of an era.L'elaborato costituisce l'esito di una ricerca svolta in co-tutela con l'Universit\ue0 degli Studi di Udine e l'Universit\ue9 Paris Ouest Nanterre La Dnse, nell'ambito delle rispettive scuole dottorali di studi artistici e audiovisivi. Comparative Genome Analysis of the Neurexin Gene Family in Danio rerio: Insights into Their Functions and Evolution

Get PDF
Neurexins constitute a family of proteins originally identified as synaptic transmembrane receptors for a spider venom toxin. In mammals, the 3 known Neurexin genes present 2 alternative promoters that drive the synthesis of a long (alpha) and a short (beta) form and contain different sites of alternative splicing (AS) that can give rise to thousands of different transcripts. To date, very little is known about the significance of this variability, except for the modulation of binding to some of the Neurexin ligands. Although orthologs of Neurexins have been isolated in invertebrates, these genes have been studied mostly in mammals. With the aim of investigating their functions in lower vertebrates, we chose Danio rerio as a model because of its increasing importance in comparative biology. We have isolated 6 zebrafish homologous genes, which are highly conserved at the structural level and display a similar regulation of AS, despite about 450 Myr separating the human and zebrafish species. Our data indicate a strong selective pressure at the exonic level and on the intronic borders, in particular on the regulative intronic sequences that flank the exons subject to AS. Such a selective pressure could help conserve the regulation and consequently the function of these genes along the vertebrates evolutive tree. AS analysis during development shows that all genes are expressed and finely regulated since the earliest stages of development, but mark an increase after the 24-h stage that corresponds to the beginning of synaptogenesis. Moreover, we found that specific isoforms of a zebrafish Neurexin gene (nrxn1a) are expressed in the adult testis and in the earliest stages of development, before the beginning of zygotic transcription, indicating a potential delivery of paternal RNA to the embryo. Our analysis suggests the existence of possible new functions for Neurexins, serving as the basis for novel approaches to the functional studies of this complex neuronal protein family and more in general to the understanding of the AS mechanism in low vertebrates

Hydrothermal treatments to promote surface inactivation and increased flexibility in three hardwoods

Get PDF
In the present study, three juvenile hardwoods (namely sycamore, pecan and london plane) were treated by boiling, steaming and microwave. Trees from Platanus x acerifolia (sycamore), Carya illinoinensis (pecan) and Luehea divaricata (london plane) were selected in homogeneous forests located in southern Brazil. Each hydrothermal treatment was performed for 60 min. In general, the hydrothermal treatments caused a certain surface inactivation effect, which was marked by decreased surface roughness, increased hydrophobic character and darkened colour patterns. Also, both decreased stiffness and strength, as well as increased deflectibility were obtained. These mechanisms were attributed to degradation in fine segments from amorphous polysaccharides, leaching of some organic extractives and fragmentation of lignin, as indirectly indicated by infrared spectra

Unsupervised activity recognition for autonomous water drones

Get PDF
We propose an automatic system aimed at discovering relevant activities for aquatic drones employed in water monitoring applications. The methodology exploits unsupervised time series segmentation to pursue two main goals: i) to support on-line decision making of drones and operators, ii) to support off-line analysis of large datasets collected by drones. The main novelty of our approach consists of its unsupervised nature, which enables to analyze unlabeled data. We investigate different variants of the proposed approach and validate them using an annotated dataset having labels for activity “upstream/downstream navigation”. Obtained results are encouraging in terms of clustering purity and silhouette which reach values greater than 0.94 and 0.20, respectively, in the best models

First report of pre-Hispanic Fasciola hepatica from South America revealed by ancient DNA

Get PDF
It is generally assumed that the digenean human liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, gained entry to South America during the 15th century upon arrival of Europeans and their livestock. Nonetheless in Patagonia, Argentina, digenean eggs similar to F. hepatica have been observed in deer coprolites dating back to 2300 years B.P. The main objective of our present study was to identify and characterize these eggs using an ancient DNA (aDNA) study. Eggs were isolated and used for aDNA extraction, amplification and sequencing of partial regions from the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 and the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase subunit 1 mitochondrial genes. Also, phylogenetic trees were constructed using Bayesian and maximum likelihood. Our results confirm the presence of F. hepatica in South America from at least 2300 years B.P. This is the first report and the first aDNA study of this trematode in South America prior to the arrival of the European cattle in the 15th century. The present work contributes to the study of phylogenetic and palaeobiogeographical aspects of F. hepatica and its settlement across America.Fil: Beltrame, Maria Ornela. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in treated woods deteriorated by a white rot fungus

Get PDF
This study aimed to analyze chemical changes by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy of Eucalyptus dunnii and Pinus elliottii treated woods subjected to an accelerated decay test with the white rot fungus Ganoderma applanatum. The wood test specimens (2,5x2,5x0,9 cm) were impregnated with preservative solutions of chromated copper borate and synthetic pyrethroids and carbamates with 6% concentration by a vaccum-pressure process. After a decay test of 16 weeks, the chemical changes of the treated and untreated wood samples were evaluated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. It was observed that the rot fungus attack caused a variation in the intensity and a displacement of spectrum peaks, indicating a change to the woods’ chemical composition after fungal exposure. The lignin / carbohydrate ratio indicated that the fungus had no preference for a specific cell wall component, pointing to a simultaneous deterioration of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin in the treated and untreated woods. Finally, the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy technique, together with the lignin / carbohydrate ratio analysis, proved efficient in the study of the variation of the wood chemical modifications deteriorated by rot fungi
