Dihedral Monodromy and Xiao Fibrations
We construct three new families of fibrations where is an
algebraic complex surface and a curve that violate Xiao's conjecture
relating the relative irregularity and the genus of the general fiber. The
fibers of are certain \'etale cyclic covers of hyperelliptic curves that
give coverings of with dihedral monodromy.
As an application, we also show the existence of big and nef effective
divisors in the Brill-Noether range.Comment: 12 pages. Exposition improved. The last section has been expanded

Short time relaxation of a driven elastic string in a random medium
We study numerically the relaxation of a driven elastic string in a two
dimensional pinning landscape. The relaxation of the string, initially flat, is
governed by a growing length separating the short steady-state
equilibrated lengthscales, from the large lengthscales that keep memory of the
initial condition. We find a macroscopic short time regime where relaxation is
universal, both above and below the depinning threshold, different from the one
expected for standard critical phenomena. Below the threshold, the zero
temperature relaxation towards the first pinned configuration provides a novel,
experimentally convenient way to access all the critical exponents of the
depinning transition independently.Comment: 4.2 pages, 3 figure
Conchoidal transform of two plane curves
The conchoid of a plane curve is constructed using a fixed circle in
the affine plane. We generalize the classical definition so that we obtain a
conchoid from any pair of curves and in the projective plane. We
present two definitions, one purely algebraic through resultants and a more
geometric one using an incidence correspondence in \PP^2 \times \PP^2. We
prove, among other things, that the conchoid of a generic curve of fixed degree
is irreducible, we determine its singularities and give a formula for its
degree and genus. In the final section we return to the classical case: for any
given curve we give a criterion for its conchoid to be irreducible and we
give a procedure to determine when a curve is the conchoid of another.Comment: 18 pages Revised version: slight title change, improved exposition,

Light-Induced Charge Accumulation in PTCDI/Pentacene/Ag(111) Heterojunctions
The incorporation of singlet fission (SF) chromophores in solar cells is expected to bring significant increases in the power conversion efficiency thanks to multiexciton generation. However, efficient charge generation in the device is determined by the energy level alignment (ELA) between the active materials, which should favor exciton transport and separation under illumination. By combining ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and optical differential reflectance measurements, we determine the ELA in a prototypical SF heterojunction between pentacene (Pc) and perylene-tetracarboxylic-diimide (PTCDI) grown on Ag(111). Time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on such a system reveals light-induced modifications of the ELA; by measuring the transient shift of the core level photoemission lines we observe an accumulation of long-lived holes in the PTCDI within the first hundred picoseconds after the optical pump
Public Procurement with Unverifiable Quality: The Case for Discriminatory Competitive Procedures
Unverifiable quality may affect the enforcement of procurement contracts even when the award procedure is able to select the most efficient firm in the market. In this paper, we show that a discriminatory competitive mechanism – which awards the contract on the basis of price and (firms') past performance – yields an efficient allocation of the contract and allows the buyer to implement her desired quality. Quality enforcement arises out of relational contracting whereby the buyer ‘handicaps' a contractor in future competitive tendering processes if it fails to provide the required quality. We study an infinitely repeated procurement model with two firms and one buyer imperfectly informed on the firms' cost, in which, in each period, the buyer runs a discriminatory auction. We restrict our analysis to the case of a buyer committed to her handicapping strategy, a case which captures some of the features of a public buyer. When players use either grim trigger or stick-and-carrot strategies, we find that the buyer can induce the delivery of optimal (unverifiable) quality with a variety of handicap levels and, when applicable, durations of the punishment period; for some values of the handicap and the length of the punishment period, both firms remain active in the market even when punished

AntVideoRecord: Autonomous system to capture the locomotor activity of leafcutter ants
The leafcutter ants (LCA) are considered plague in a great part of the American continent, causing great damage in production fields. Knowing the locomotion and foraging rhythm in LCA on a continuous basis would imply a significant advance for ecological studies, fundamentally of animal behavior. However, studying the forage rhythm of LCA in the field involves a significant human effort. This also adds a risk of subjective results due to the operator fatigue. In this work a new development named ‘AntVideoRecord’ is proposed to address this issue. This device is a low-cost autonomous system that records videos of the LCA path in a fixed position. The device can be easily reproduced using the freely accessible source code provided. The evaluation of this novel device was successful because it has exceeded all the basic requirements in the field: record continuously for at least seven days, withstand high and low temperatures, capture acceptable videos during the day and night, and have a simple configuration protocol by mobile devices and laptops. It was possible to confirm the correct operation of the device, being able to record more than 1900 h in the field at different climate conditions and times of the day.Fil: Sabattini, Julian Alberto. Spectroscopic fingerprints of iron-coordinated cobalt and iron porphyrin layers on graphene
Achieving design capabilities of monolayer 2D functional catalysts represents a challenging perspective. Coordinated single metal atom sites can offer tailored electronic configuration, ligation geometries, chemical activity and selectivity, together with stability. We report spectroscopic evidence of the formation of a 2D metal-organic framework supported by a single graphene sheet in which coordination among Tetra-Pyridyl-Porphyrins (TPyPs) is spontaneously obtained by exploiting single iron atoms. The spectroscopic characterization, together with ab initio methods, reveals that metal inter-molecular coordination occurs via the terminal nitrogen atoms contained in the pyridinic residues of adjacent TPyPs. Interestingly, the peripheral coordination of metal atoms is found to affect the electronic configuration of the porphyrins core. Due to the chemical stability of the supporting graphene layer, its weak interaction with the metal-organic framework, and the known electrochemical activity of the latter, this system represents an optimal candidate for the design and engineering of prototype 2D electrocatalytic materials
