The Treaties Between Rus' and Byzantium In this paper, the Author analyzes the lexicon of the treaties between Rus’ and Byzantium (10th Century). The use of ethnonyms, toponyms and of spatial terminology shows a clear predominance of personal-ethnic terms over spatial ones. This may reflect the typical “concreteness” of Roman law. Broadly speaking, the titles of Byzantine emperors and of Rus’ princes follow the usages of the imperial chancery. However, in many instances there are significant divergences, which do not necessarily prove that these documents are not authentic. On the contrary, this procedure reflects the highly flexible practices of Byzantine diplomacy. Besides, the mention of Slavic pagan deities alongside the Christian God could be read as reminiscent of very archaic practices, reflected by the Roman evocatio and ius fetiale. Furthermore, the paper focuses on the inadequacy of the dichotomy autochthonous (‘Russian’) ~ allogeneous (‘Byzantine’) usually adopted in studies concerning these texts. Although such an approach may shed light on some of the issues raised, it appears to be misleading in the study of phenomena with deeper historical roots. In conclusion, in the context of culture, the loan represents the norm, not the exception

The textual tradition of the Slavic Gospels shows clear evidence of reciprocal influence between the liturgical version and the continuous text. The present survey analyzes 17 ‘textual nodes’ of the Gospel of John, i.e. segments of the text for which the variants of 126 Greek lectionaries from the 8th-11th century have been collected. This analysis aims to shed light on a scarcely studied aspect of Slavic textual history, thus completing the picture outlined in previous works of the author, which were focused on the relationship with the tradition of Greek Tetraevangelia

Ivan Aleksandăr (1331-1371)

The long reign of Ivan Aleksandăr (1331-1371), the penultimate emperor of Bulgaria prior to the Turkish conquest, was marked by a series of successful military campaigns against Serbia and Byzantium and above all by an intensive cultural production, largely fostered and funded by the sovereign himself. The central decades of the fourteenth century were of crucial importance for the later cultural evolution of Bulgaria and the whole of Orthodox Slovenia, despite which to date ample and exhaustive studies on the figure of Ivan Aleksandăr are lacking. There is, in effect, a considerable amount of information at disposal, although it is scattered over the literary sources, the colophons of the manuscripts, the epigraphic documentation and also, obviously, the official deeds promulgated by the Emperor. Through the analysis of this varied documentation, this book attempts to reconstruct the figure of the sovereign, the context in which he lived and worked, his greatness and his mistakes and his parallel activities as a strategist and an illuminated patron of the arts. For the first time, the Italian reader can find collected and translated all the manuscript sources relating to the Bulgarian sovereign. The book is completed by an appendix with the original texts of the Slavonic-ecclesiastical tradition

LESSONS IN TRANSLATION. The essays in this volume focus on translation, analyzed as an intercultural process in which two different language-cultures concretely become one text, a texte de textes, whose semiotic substance derives precisely from this meeting-clash between them. Translation is here understood first and foremost as a concrete discursive practice and enunciative strategy, and secondly as a theory that tends to resemanticize the process in a cultural perspective: from concept to text, or rather from concepts to texts, as this field of research requires and as evidenced by the convergent perspective of analysis which lies behind the variety of methods and themes in this series of lessons, which range from the history of translation to self-translation, from verse and wordplay translations to the biography of translators. This convergence of perspective and intent is embodied in the didactic, less specialized, style of the articles, which are mainly addressed to a student readership, as implicit in the title of the series: Lessons in Translation

Il Vangelo di Ivan Aleksandăr nella tradizione testuale dei vangeli slavi

Alberto Alberti, Marcello Garzaniti The Ivan Alexander Gospel in the Textual Tradition of the Slavic Gospels In this article, the Authors analyse the Slavic text of the Gospels in the light of the most recent developments in Greek New Testament studies. Particularly useful is the work carried out at the Institut für neutestamentliche Forschung (Münster). On the basis of the identifi cation of a series of ‘Test Passages’ (Teststellen), the Münster volumes offer all the readings of the Greek tradition (except for lectionaries). In this paper, the fi rst 10 chapters of the Gospel of John and the entire text of the synoptic Gospels are analysed from this point of view, comparing the Greek text with a corpus of 12 Slavic manuscripts. The text of the Ivan Alexander Gospel in some instances refl ects the process of harmonization to the Greek ‘Byzantine text’, but in general terms preserves many archaic features, which is quite unusual for a 14th century Gospel. The revision on the basis of Greek manuscripts is also illustrated by readings which are clearly in harmony with particular forms of the Greek text

Primary cerebral neoplasms associated with vascular malformations: anatomo-pathologic study of two cases

The association of intracerebral vascular malformations and primary cerebral neoplasm is rare. The most commonly found vascular malformation with neoplasm is intracranial arterial aneurysm.
