Local majority dynamics on preferential attachment graphs
Suppose in a graph vertices can be either red or blue. Let be odd. At
each time step, each vertex in polls random neighbours and takes
the majority colour. If it doesn't have neighbours, it simply polls all of
them, or all less one if the degree of is even. We study this protocol on
the preferential attachment model of Albert and Barab\'asi, which gives rise to
a degree distribution that has roughly power-law ,
as well as generalisations which give exponents larger than . The setting is
as follows: Initially each vertex of is red independently with probability
, and is otherwise blue. We show that if is
sufficiently biased away from , then with high probability,
consensus is reached on the initial global majority within
steps. Here is the number of vertices and is the minimum of
and (or if is even), being the number of edges each new
vertex adds in the preferential attachment generative process. Additionally,
our analysis reduces the required bias of for graphs of a given degree
sequence studied by the first author (which includes, e.g., random regular
graphs)
The role of cryptotephra in refining the chronology of Late Pleistocene human evolution and cultural change in North Africa
© 2014.Sites in North Africa hold key information for dating the presence of Homo sapiens and the distribution of Middle Stone Age (MSA), Middle Palaeolithic (MP) and Later Stone Age (LSA) cultural activity in the Late Pleistocene. Here we present new and review recently published tephrochronological evidence for five cave sites in North Africa with long MSA/MP and LSA cultural sequences. Four tephra horizons have been identified at the Haua Fteah (Cyrenaica, Libya). They include cryptotephra evidence for the Campanian Ignimbrite (CI) eruption dating to ~39 ka that allows correlation with other Palaeolithic sequences in the eastern Mediterranean and as far north as Russia. Cryptotephra have also been recorded from the Moroccan sites of Taforalt, Rhafas and Dar es-Soltane 1. At Taforalt the geochemical composition suggests a provenance in the Azores, while examples from Sodmein (Egypt) appear to derive from central Anatolia and another unknown source. In these latter examples chemical compositional data from relevant proximal volcanic centres is currently lacking so the identification of tephra in layers of known age and cultural association provides the first reliable age determinations for distal volcanic events and their geographical extent. A universal model for mobility and migration patterns
Introduced in its contemporary form by George Kingsley Zipf in 1946, but with
roots that go back to the work of Gaspard Monge in the 18th century, the
gravity law is the prevailing framework to predict population movement, cargo
shipping volume, inter-city phone calls, as well as bilateral trade flows
between nations. Despite its widespread use, it relies on adjustable parameters
that vary from region to region and suffers from known analytic
inconsistencies. Here we introduce a stochastic process capturing local
mobility decisions that helps us analytically derive commuting and mobility
fluxes that require as input only information on the population distribution.
The resulting radiation model predicts mobility patterns in good agreement with
mobility and transport patterns observed in a wide range of phenomena, from
long-term migration patterns to communication volume between different regions.
Given its parameter-free nature, the model can be applied in areas where we
lack previous mobility measurements, significantly improving the predictive
accuracy of most of phenomena affected by mobility and transport processes.Comment: Main text and supplementary informatio
A close halo of large transparent grains around extreme red giant stars
Intermediate-mass stars end their lives by ejecting the bulk of their
envelope via a slow dense wind back into the interstellar medium, to form the
next generation of stars and planets. Stellar pulsations are thought to elevate
gas to an altitude cool enough for the condensation of dust, which is then
accelerated by radiation pressure from starlight, entraining the gas and
driving the wind. However accounting for the mass loss has been a problem due
to the difficulty in observing tenuous gas and dust tens of milliarcseconds
from the star, and there is accordingly no consensus on the way sufficient
momentum is transferred from the starlight to the outflow. Here, we present
spatially-resolved, multi-wavelength observations of circumstellar dust shells
of three stars on the asymptotic giant branch of the HR diagram. When imaged in
scattered light, dust shells were found at remarkably small radii (<~ 2 stellar
radii) and with unexpectedly large grains (~300 nm radius). This proximity to
the photosphere argues for dust species that are transparent to starlight and
therefore resistant to sublimation by the intense radiation field. While
transparency usually implies insufficient radiative pressure to drive a wind,
the radiation field can accelerate these large grains via photon scattering
rather than absorption - a plausible mass-loss mechanism for lower-amplitude

Empowering the competitiveness of asnaf rural zakat entrepreneurs policy: national development aspirations 2030
Entrepreneurship is an area that can change the landscape of people's lives in a country. This activity not only can make a huge contribution to individuals but can also impact the development of a country. To achieve this, the government has formulated various policies making entrepreneurship a national priority. Therefore, the study aims to outline the agenda of national development in 2030 in strengthening the competitiveness of entrepreneurship especially for rural entrepreneurs. This qualitative study was conducted using data collection and data analysis methods. The method of data collection is done through library research. The data obtained were analysed based on inductive and deductive methods to obtain the results. The analysis has outlined the competitiveness of rural entrepreneurs to be included in the government agenda such as National Entrepreneurship Policy 2030, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Shared Prosperity Vision 2030, Rural Development Policy, Rural Development Harapan Blueprint 2018-2023, Small and Medium Enterprise Master Plan 2012-2020. However, the key challenge in making this agenda successful is to change the mindset of the rural community to be ready to accept and make any changes to create an entrepreneurial community by 2030
Secondary bacterial infections of buruli ulcer lesions before and after chemotherapy with streptomycin and rifampicin
Buruli ulcer (BU), caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans is a chronic necrotizing skin disease. It usually starts with a subcutaneous nodule or plaque containing large clusters of extracellular acid-fast bacilli. Surrounding tissue is destroyed by the cytotoxic macrolide toxin mycolactone produced by microcolonies of M. ulcerans. Skin covering the destroyed subcutaneous fat and soft tissue may eventually break down leading to the formation of large ulcers that progress, if untreated, over months and years. Here we have analyzed the bacterial flora of BU lesions of three different groups of patients before, during and after daily treatment with streptomycin and rifampicin for eight weeks (SR8) and determined drug resistance of the bacteria isolated from the lesions. Before SR8 treatment, more than 60% of the examined BU lesions were infected with other bacteria, with Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa being the most prominent ones. During treatment, 65% of all lesions were still infected, mainly with P. aeruginosa. After completion of SR8 treatment, still more than 75% of lesions clinically suspected to be infected were microbiologically confirmed as infected, mainly with P. aeruginosa or Proteus miriabilis. Drug susceptibility tests revealed especially for S. aureus a high frequency of resistance to the first line drugs used in Ghana. Our results show that secondary infection of BU lesions is common. This could lead to delayed healing and should therefore be further investigated
Dietary soy and meat proteins induce distinct physiological and gene expression changes in rats
This study reports on a comprehensive comparison of the effects of soy and meat proteins given at the recommended level on physiological markers of metabolic syndrome and the hepatic transcriptome. Male rats were fed semi-synthetic diets for 1 wk that differed only regarding protein source, with casein serving as reference. Body weight gain and adipose tissue mass were significantly reduced by soy but not meat proteins. The insulin resistance index was improved by soy, and to a lesser extent by meat proteins. Liver triacylglycerol contents were reduced by both protein sources, which coincided with increased plasma triacylglycerol concentrations. Both soy and meat proteins changed plasma amino acid patterns. The expression of 1571 and 1369 genes were altered by soy and meat proteins respectively. Functional classification revealed that lipid, energy and amino acid metabolic pathways, as well as insulin signaling pathways were regulated differently by soy and meat proteins. Several transcriptional regulators, including NFE2L2, ATF4, Srebf1 and Rictor were identified as potential key upstream regulators. These results suggest that soy and meat proteins induce distinct physiological and gene expression responses in rats and provide novel evidence and suggestions for the health effects of different protein sources in human diets
Methylating mushrooms
Peptide N-methylation is an important strategy used by medicinal chemists to improve cell permeability, oral bioavailability, and target affinity of peptide-based inhibitors. Correspondingly, N-methyl amides appear extensively in bioactive natural products. In the case of the immunosuppressant cyclosporine, for example, specific N-methylation of seven out of ten backbone amide nitrogens in the cyclic decapeptide is thought to allow a conformational ‘shapeshifting’ that hides polar N–H moieties and facilitates passive diffusion across cell membranes. Until now, N-methylation has primarily been the mark of peptide natural products from complex nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) assembly lines, and has not previously been found among their cousins, the ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptide (RiPP) natural products.
