Rangeland surveys : a basis for improved land use

    Get PDF
In mis 1988, the Department of Agriculture started a three-year programme to assist pastoralists in the Murchison River catchment to update land management planning of their stations. This Project, which is funded by the National Soil Conservation Program, will use interim results from a recent rangeland survey which has investigated and mapped the grazing recources throughout the region. Elsewhere in Western Australia\u27s pastoral areas, information on the productive potential of each area - and the management problems inherent for each class of land - are being used to help pastoral managers of Soil Conservation Districts rehabilitate degraded areas. This information will also encourage them to adopt management practices that conserve the land and improve the long-term economic performance of the grazing enterprise

Accurate Coordinates and 2MASS Cross-IDs for (Almost) All Gliese Catalog Stars

We provide precise J2000, epoch 2000 coordinates and cross-identifications to sources in the 2MASS point source catalog for nearly all stars in the Gliese, Gliese and Jahreiss, and Woolley catalogs of nearby stars. The only Gliese objects where we were not successful are two Gliese sources that are actually QSOs, two proposed companions to brighter stars which we believe do not exist, four stars included in one of the catalogs but identified there as only optical companions, one probable plate flaw, and two stars which simply remain un-recovered. For the 4251 recovered stars, 2693 have coordinates based on Hipparcos positions, 1549 have coordinates based on 2MASS data, and 9 have positions from other astrometric sources. All positions have been calculated at epoch 2000 using proper motions from the literature, which are also given here.Comment: accepted to PASP, Full version of Table 1 available electronicall

Online, Continuous Sensor and Method for Curd Moisture Content Control in Cheese Making

    Get PDF
A method is provided for improving quality of cheese produced from a milk batch. A light beam from an incident light source impinges onto a surface of the milk batch, and light backscatter is optically detected during a coagulation process and correlated to an optimum cutting time for the milk coagulum. Next, light backscattered from a curd and whey mixture derived from the milk batch during a syneresis process is optically detected and correlated to an optimum syneresis endpoint. At least one of the backscattered light data, optical parameters developed from analysis of the backscattered light data, and whey fat dilution are correlated to at least one of a milk protein %, a milk fat %, a milk total solids content, a milk processing temperature, a curd moisture content, a curd moisture change over time, whey fat content, a whey fat loss, and a final curd yield

    Method of Improving Cheese Quality

A method is provided for improving the quality of cheese produced from a curd and whey mixture. The method comprises the steps of monitoring the curd and whey mixture during syneresis processing to collect color data, comparing the color data to a predetermined standard and terminating syneresis when the color meets the predetermined standard or, alternatively, analyzing the color data obtained to generate kinetic parameters that can be used to predict the end point of syneresis to improve control of curd moisture content

The right ventricular response to lung resection

    Get PDF
Objectives: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer death and in suitable cases the best chance of cure is offered by surgery. Lung resection is associated with significant postoperative cardiorespiratory morbidity, with dyspnea and reduced functional capacity as dominant features. These changes are poorly associated with deterioration in pulmonary function and a potential role of right ventricular (RV) dysfunction has been hypothesized. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging is a reference method for noninvasive assessment of RV function and has not previously been applied to this population. Methods: We used cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging to assess the RV response to lung resection. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging with volume and flow analysis was performed on 27 patients preoperatively, on postoperative day 2 and at 2 months. Left ventricular ejection fraction and RV ejection fraction, the ratio of stroke volume to end systolic volume, pulmonary artery acceleration time, and distensibility of main and branch pulmonary arteries were studied. Results: Mean ± standard deviation RV ejection fraction deteriorated from 50.5% ± 6.9% preoperatively to 45.6% ± 4.5% on postoperative day 2 and remained depressed at 44.9% ± 7.7% by 2 months (P = .003). The ratio of stroke volume to end systolic volume deteriorated from median 1.0 (quartile 1, quartile 3, 0.9, 1.2) preoperatively to median 0.8 (quartile 1, quartile 3, 0.7, 1.0) on postoperative day 2 (P = .011). On postoperative day 2 there was a decrease in pulmonary artery acceleration time and operative pulmonary artery distensibility (P < .030 for both). There were no changes in left ventricular ejection fraction during the study period (P = .621). Conclusions: These findings suggest RV dysfunction occurs following lung resection and persists 2 months after surgery. The deterioration in the ratio of stroke volume to end systolic volume suggests a mismatch between afterload and contractility. There is an increase in indices of pulsatile afterload resulting from the operative pulmonary artery

TERMS Photometry of Known Transiting Exoplanets

    Get PDF
The Transit Ephemeris Refinement and Monitoring Survey (TERMS) conducts radial velocity and photometric monitoring of known exoplanets in order to refine planetary orbits and predictions of possible transit times. This effort is primarily directed towards planets not known to transit, but a small sample of our targets consist of known transiting systems. Here we present precision photometry for 6 WASP planets acquired during their transit windows. We perform a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis for each planet and combine these data with previous measurements to redetermine the period and ephemerides for these planets. These observations provide recent mid-transit times which are useful for scheduling future observations. Our results improve the ephemerides of WASP-4b, WASP-5b and WASP-6b and reduce the uncertainties on the mid-transit time for WASP-29b. We also confirm the orbital, stellar and planetary parameters of all 6 systems.Comment: 12 pages; 6 figures; 9 tables; accepted for publication in AJ; two references updated and minor improvements made to match the version to be publishe

SDN enabled dynamically reconfigurable high capacity optical access architecture for converged services

    Get PDF
Dynamically reconfigurable time-division multiplexing (TDM) dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) long-reach passive optical networks (PONs) can support the reduction of nodes and network interfaces by enabling a fully meshed flat optical core. In this paper we demonstrate the flexibility of the TDM-DWDM PON architecture, which can enable the convergence of multiple service types on a single physical layer. Heterogeneous services and modulation formats, i.e. residential 10G PON channels, business 100G dedicated channel and wireless fronthaul, are demonstrated co-existing on the same long reach TDM-DWDM PON system, with up to 100km reach, 512 users and emulated system load of 40 channels, employing amplifier nodes with either erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) or semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). For the first time end-to-end software defined networking (SDN) management of the access and core network elements is also implemented and integrated with the PON physical layer in order to demonstrate two service use cases: a fast protection mechanism with end-to-end service restoration in the case of a primary link failure; and dynamic wavelength allocation (DWA) in response to an increased traffic demand
