    Management of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) should consider both the maternal, fetal, and neonatal effects of the disease, line of treatment, and physiological changes during pregnancy. Women with GDM are classified into two categories according to their fasting blood glucose levels. Dietary control is mandatory in both classes, and the addition of pharmacological agents in those with fasting and 2-h postprandial plasma glucose levels <95 and 120 mg/dL is controversial (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, 2013). Individualization of the diet in GDM according to women weight and height is recommended by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), and restriction of carbohydrate to a level that maintains normal glucose level is mandatory with individualization of the caloric intake according to women BMI and weight gain during pregnancy

    Low Complexity Selective Adaptive Multicarrier DS-CDMA Receiver

    In this paper, selective adaptive (SA) receiver for Multicarrier Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (MC DS-CDMA) system is presented. This receiver has high performance and at the same time reduces the multiple access interference (MAI) of the MC DS-CDMA) system with low computational complexity. The performance of SA receiver is measured in terms of the bit error rate (BER). An upper bound expression of the BER for the SA receiver under Rayleigh fading channel condition is derived and validated by computer simulations. Moreover, the implementation complexities of the SA receiver is compared with the Adaptive Parallel Interference Cancellation (APIC) receiver.

    Who complies with COVID-19 transmission mitigation behavioral guidelines?

    During the past 6 months, the world has lost almost 950,000 lives because of the outbreak of COVID-19, with more than 31 million individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 worldwide. In response, lockdowns, and various other policies have been implemented. Unfortunately, many individuals are violating those policies and governments have been urging people to comply with the behavioral guidelines. In this paper, we argue that personality traits need to be considered to understand and encourage more effective public compliance with COVID 19 transmission mitigation behavioral guidelines. Using a sample of 8,548 individuals from Japan, we show that certain personality traits are related to the tendency to comply with COVID-19 transmission mitigation behavioral guidelines. We emphasize the importance of understanding why people respond differently to the same authority’s messages and provide actionable insights for government policy makers and those who implement policies

    Isoflavonoids

    Isoflavonoids are interesting class of natural products due to their positive effects on human health. Isoflavonoids include isoflavones, isoflavanones, isoflavans, rotenoids and pterocarpans. Although they are reported from many plant families, most isoflavonoids are produced by the subfamily Papilionaceae of the Fabaceae. Various chromatographic methods have been applied for the purification of isoflavonoids. Simple Ultra Violet (UV) absorption spectra as well as both One and two dimensional NMR (1D- and 2D-NMR) are critical for the identification of isoflavonoids. Each class of isoflavonoids has its unique feature in both 1H- and 13C-NMR that enable their proper characterization. High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS) is a substantial tool in such challenge. In vitro experiments indicated that isoflavonoids possess antioxidant, antimutagenic, antiproliferative as well as cancer preventive effects. Epidemiological studies provide support for some of these effects on human. Members of this class also are reported to have antimicrobial activity. In this chapter, isoflavones, isoflavanones, isoflavans, homoisoflavonoids and isoflavenes will be discussed in relation to their occurrence, methods of purification, spectral characters helpful in structure elucidation as well as their biological importance

    The influence of mineralogical composition and alkali reactivity for utilization of some Egyptian crushed granites as a concrete aggregate

    Egyptian Eastern Desert is rich in many areas that contain granites masses throughout the geological era; some of them show good characteristics of the rock hardness, durability, density and mineralogy. This current research aims to utilize three main types of granite aggregates based on their mineralogical composition and Alkali reactivity with cement during concrete production. The studied granite aggregate can be also classified into red younger granite aggregate, white older granite aggregate and grey older granite aggregate. Evaluating these granite rocks as aggregate used in concrete mixture is interesting by produced three mixes using the three studied granite aggregate symbolized (Red GA), (White GA) and (Grey GA), tested mechanically to give a more detailed for the obtained results to be not restricted for only studied granite aggregate criteria but also to follow the actual reaction of this studied granite aggregate with cement.&nbsp;&nbsp; It was obtained that all studied granite aggregates within acceptable limits of concrete aggregate by following Egyptian code (ECP-203) although their variation on its mineralogical composition. Some reflections produced from change in mineralogical composition between the three studied granite aggregates exhibited by relative regression in the average physico-mechanical values for both (White and Grey GA) than (Red GA). On the other hand, slight reactive for (Red GA) than others at the age of 28 day. In addition, all produced (Red GA), (White GA) and (Grey GA) mixes were acceptable mechanically with limits of (ECP-203) giving benefit for using all of the studied granite aggregate after their detailed study involving its mineralogical composition and alkali aggregate reactivity (AAR)

    Ductile corrosion-free self-centering concrete elements

    Corrosion is a major factor in the deterioration of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. To mitigate this problem, steel bars can be replaced with glass-fiber-reinforced-polymer (GFRP) bars. However, the lack of ductility of GFRP-RC elements has prevented their use in many structural applications, especially in seismic areas. Superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) bars have been proposed to be used in seismic areas because of their self-centering characteristics. Also, they have the added advantage of being corrosion resistant. This paper examines the combined use of SMA and GFRP bars to achieve ductile self-centering and corrosion-free elements. The first challenge for such a proposal relates to designing concrete frames, reinforced with SMA and GFRP bars, that have adequate lateral performance in terms of initial stiffness, ductility, and strength. A comprehensive parametric study is conducted to better understand the structural behavior of concrete elements reinforced with SMA and/or GFRP bars. Results from the study are utilized to develop design equations that allow designing an SMA/GFRP RC section to replace a steel RC section, while maintaining lateral strength, stiffness, and ductility. To examine the adequacy of the developed equations, a six-storey concrete frame is designed, and its lateral performance is examined using pushover analysis

    Seismic performance of ductile corrosion-free reinforced concrete frames

    Corrosion of steel bars is the main cause of the deterioration of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. To avoid this problem, steel rebars can be replaced with glass-fiber-reinforced-polymer (GFRP). However, the brittle behaviour of GFRP RC elements has limited their use in many applications. The use of shape memory alloy (SMA) and/or stainless steel (SS) rebars can solve this problem, because of their ductile behaviour and corrosion resistance. However, their high price is a major obstacle. To address issues of ductility, corrosion, and cost, this paper examines the hybrid use of GFRP, SS, and SMA in RC frames. The use of SMA provides an additional advantage as it reduces seismic residual deformations. Three frames were designed. A steel RC frame, SS-GFRP RC frame, and SMA-SS-GFRP RC frame. The design criteria for the two GFRP RC frames followed previous research by the authors, which aimed at having approximately equal lateral resistance, stiffness, and ductility for GFRP and steel RC frames. The three frames were then analyzed using twenty seismic records. Their seismic performance confirmed the success of the adopted design methodology in achieving corrosion-free frames that provide adequate seismic performance
