    Get PDF
The application of fuel cell is increasing in the last years mainly due to the possibility of high efficient decentralized clean energy generation. Fuel cells are a potential power source for electric vehicle or distributed power generation system. In electric vehicle application, a high power boost dc-dc converter is adopted to adjust the output voltage, current and power offuel cell engine to meet the vehicle requirements. The major challenge of designing a boost converter for high power application is how to handle the high current at the input and high voltage at the output. In this paper, a high voltage ratio interleaved boost dc-dc converter is proposed for stepping-up the voltage on high power application. A prototype of converter system was built. The experimental waveforms of the high voltage ratio interleaved boost converter are presented

Dynamic Evolution Control for Fuel Cell DC-DC Converter

    Get PDF
Fuel cells are new alternative energy resource that has a great promise for distributed generation and electric vehicle application. However, fuel cells have a slow response due to their slow internal electromechanical and thermodynamic response. To optimize the fuel cell system performance, a fuel cell DC-DC converter with an appropriate controller which can regulate the power flow and automatically adjust the converter output voltage is needed. This paper proposes a new control technique for fuel cell DC-DC power converter. Design of the proposed control method for fuel cell DC-DC power converter is provided. A new approach for converter controllers synthesis based on dynamic evolution control theory is presented. In this paper, synthesis example of boost DC-DC converter is discussed. Performance of the proposed dynamic evolution control under step load variation condition is simulated under Matlab-Simulink environment. Simulation results show that the proposed techniques are capable for controlling fuel cell DC-DC converter

Exploration of study skills among professional Accounting students: evidence from Malaysian Public university / Melissa Mam Yudi…[et al.]

    Get PDF
The purpose of the present study was to explore the dominant study skills of students in preparation for professional accounting examinations and to investigate the existence of any relationship between demographic factors and study skills. A total of 141 male and female first year students pursuing the ACCA professional qualification from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) participated in the present study by completing a questionnaire on study skills. With regards to the first objective, the findings show students focus more on test strategies, followed by time management, study aids and note taking, organising and processing information and lastly reading and selecting the main idea. As for the second objective, the demographic factors examined in this study are gender, parents’ income and whether the student scored “A” for English in high school. The findings of the relationship indicate a significant relationship between parents’ income with time management and reading and selecting main ideas, while other demographic factors show no significant relationships. This research contributes an input to the teaching and learning methods which plays an important role in the improvement of students’ academic performance

Characterization of heat waves: a case study for Peninsular Malaysia

    Get PDF
The present work aims to investigate the characteristics of heat waves in Peninsular Malaysia based on the Excess Heat Factor (EHF) Index. This index was calculated based on the daily maximum and minimum temperatures over nine meteorological stations in Peninsular Malaysia during the period 2001 to 2010. The selected station is representing all of the states in Peninsular Malaysia. Statistical analysis found that the highest of the EHF happened at the Kuala Lumpur station in 2002 with an index of 9.1°C² and the lowest was in Alor Setar in 2006 with an index of 0.1°C². The EHF moderate was found at Kuantan with an index of 4.2°C². Moreover, the longest heat wave with 24 days has happened in Ipoh, Perak with amplitude of 29.4°C – 33.0°C. Most of the heat wave characterized in Malaysia occurred during the El Nino events especially moderate El Nino in 2002 until 2005, and 2010. The Southeast, northeast and west part of Malaysia experience the highest average heat wave activity. These results indicated that the heat wave conditions in Peninsular Malaysia are anxious and this requires immediate investigation because it has a direct impact on agriculture, particularly health, economic, and human being

N/A and signature analysis for malwares detection and removal

    Get PDF
Objectives: This study aimed to design an application that effectively scans, detects, and removes malware based on their signatures and behaviours. Methods/Statistical analysis: The rapid growth in the number and types of malware poses high security risks despite the numerous antivirus softwares with Signature-Based Detection (SBD) method. The SBD method depends on the signatures or malware names that are available in the algorithm database. Findings: Malware is a type of malicious software that poses security threats to the targeted system, resulting in information loss, resource abuse, or system damage. The antivirus software is one of the most commonly used security tools to detect and remove malware. However, the malware defences should focus on the malware signatures since there is no universal way of recognising all malware. Therefore, this study suggested N/A detection technique as the dynamic method (behaviour-based detection method) that depends on the Windows Registry (system database). Both static and dynamic detection methods were assessed in this study. Based on the experimental outcomes, SBD method detected and removed most of malware (only known viruses). Application/Improvements: Meanwhile, the N/A detection method detected and removed all injected malware (known and unknown Trojan horse) within a relatively low running time

Synthesis and optimization of nano-sized bacterial-based violacein pigment using response surface methodology

Violacein from Chromobacterium violaceum has raised the enthusiasm of researchers in conducting comprehensive studies on these pigments due to their diverse biological activities including antibacterial and antioxidant properties. However, a limitation related with the solubility of the violacein pigment, by which it is commonly dissolved in toxic solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide and methanol instead of being soluble in biological fluids and water. Hence, this study provides a method to synthesis the violacein pigment in nanoscale through an encapsulation technique using chitosan-tripolyphosphate (Cs-TPP) nanoparticles. The synthesis of nanoparticles in this study involved ionic gelation between chitosan and tripolyphosphate (TPP), in which several parameters were taken into consideration in order to control the size and dispersion stability of the violacein pigment in the suspension. Preparation parameters, including the concentration of chitosan, TPP and pigment as well as the mass ratio of chitosan to TPP, were optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Minimum particle size of 149.0 nm with zeta potential of +23.40 mV was obtained at the optimal formulations of 2.33 mg/mL of chitosan, 1.5 mg/mL of TPP, and 1 ppm of violacein pigment and at mass ratio of chitosan:TPP of 7:1. This nano-sized violacein pigment is expected to be applied as safe additive, colorant, and therapeutic agents. Meanwhile, RSM in the study could provide the optimal formulations for producing stable nano-sized violacein pigment

Premature Activation of the SLX4 Complex by Vpr Promotes G2/M Arrest and Escape from Innate Immune Sensing

    Get PDF
SummaryThe HIV auxiliary protein Vpr potently blocks the cell cycle at the G2/M transition. Here, we show that G2/M arrest results from untimely activation of the structure-specific endonuclease (SSE) regulator SLX4 complex (SLX4com) by Vpr, a process that requires VPRBP-DDB1-CUL4 E3-ligase complex. Direct interaction of Vpr with SLX4 induced the recruitment of VPRBP and kinase-active PLK1, enhancing the cleavage of DNA by SLX4-associated MUS81-EME1 endonucleases. G2/M arrest-deficient Vpr alleles failed to interact with SLX4 or to induce recruitment of MUS81 and PLK1. Furthermore, knockdown of SLX4, MUS81, or EME1 inhibited Vpr-induced G2/M arrest. In addition, we show that the SLX4com is involved in suppressing spontaneous and HIV-1-mediated induction of type 1 interferon and establishment of antiviral responses. Thus, our work not only reveals the identity of the cellular factors required for Vpr-mediated G2/M arrest but also identifies the SLX4com as a regulator of innate immunity
