Board mechanisms and Malaysian Family Companies' Performance

    Get PDF
Many overseas studies discussed the topic of corporate governance and performance in family companies, however, few studies have been conducted in Malaysia. The objective of this paper is to examine the board mechanisms and family companies’ performance using three performance indicators (Tobin’s Q, Earnings Per Share & Operating Cash Flow). The sample size is 189 family companies listed on Bursa Malaysia from 2003 to 2007. The findings from this study reveal that some of the board mechanisms influence family companies’ performance. This study evidenced that family companies with a large board size, low directors’ expertise and duality leadership contribute to higher family companies’ performance. However, this study found that the academic qualification of directors does not influence firm performance. Therefore, generally, regulators and investors need to be sensitive to the fact that family companies do have differences in corporate governance practices compared to non-family companies

Traffic characteristics mechanism for detecting rogue access point in local area network

Rogue Access Point (RAP) is a network vulnerability involving illicit usage of wireless access point in a network environment. The existence of RAP can be identified using network traffic inspection. The purpose of this thesis is to present a study on the use of local area network (LAN) traffic characterisation for typifying wired and wireless network traffic through examination of packet exchange between sender and receiver by using inbound packet capturing with time stamping to indicate the existence of a RAP. The research is based on the analysis of synchronisation response (SYN/ACK), close connection respond (FIN/ACK), push respond (PSH/ACK), and data send (PAYLOAD) of the provider’s flags which are paired with their respective receiver acknowledgment (ACK). The timestamp of each pair is grouped using the Equal Group technique, which produced group means. These means were then categorised into three zones to form zone means. Subsequently, the zone means were used to generate a global mean that served as a threshold value for identifying RAP. A network testbed was developed from which real network traffic was captured and analysed. A mechanism to typify wired and wireless LAN traffic using the analysis of the global mean used in the RAP detection process has been proposed. The research calculated RAP detection threshold value of 0.002 ms for the wired IEEE 802.3 LAN, while wireless IEEE 802.11g is 0.014 ms and IEEE 802.11n is 0.033 ms respectively. This study has contributed a new mechanism for detecting a RAP through traffic characterisation by examining packet communication in the LAN environment. The detection of RAP is crucial in the effort to reduce vulnerability and to ensure integrity of data exchange in LA

Since independent administrative law, has shown a tremendous growth in Malaysia. With an excpetion, the courts have also made a number of pronouncement bearing on administrative law. And in number of these cases, courts have shown signs of creativity, just as other courts in. other countries have done. As the states come to play an active role in regulating the citizens affairs, and as the administrative impignes on individual interest - the effect is that more cases with various aspects and problems of Administrative law subsist. Thus it is the aim of this project paper to show the role of judiciary in playing meaningful part in developing the elements of administrative behaviour towards the citizens. The courts must ensure that in so doing the administrative restrict themselves to the law, constitutionalism, democratic value and administrative exigencies. Briefly this project paper endeavoursto portray the Judiciary Role in administrative law in Malaysia. This paper seeks to highlight court pronouncements and extract principle and the court attitude therefrom. Apart from the above elements the independence of judiciary is also emphasised, to show th

The rapid expansion of the Malaysian retail contribution to the GDP could expand to 15 per cent from the current 10 per cent in the next five years, stated by Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) President Datuk Seri Garry Chua. He mentioned that for the second quarter of 2018, Malaysia’s retail industry reported a growth rate of 2.1 percent in retail sales, compared to the same period in 2017. As a result, some retailers enjoyed a 30 percent increase in business, and others only 10 per cent after the 0 per cent of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). High value-added retail goods, such as luxury items, sporting goods, electrical goods, electronics goods, gadgets and furniture, enjoyed higher sales compared to those of basic necessities, household goods and general fashion items. There is huge potential in the local retail industry, despite concerns of a glut in retail space. Hence, the malls must be interactive and have new dynamics in shopping for consumer’s repatronage (Sharen, 2018). Specifically, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah in East Malaysia, shopping malls have tremendously sprung up nearly in every neighbourhood. In present, there are new malls opened that compete with the old. From just several earliest malls such as Centre Point, Wawasan Plaza, Wisma Merdeka, KK Plaza, and Karamunsing Complex, there are more upcoming operational malls to be built located in Kota Kinabalu city (Daily Express Online, December 30, 2015). The new malls opened differ in sizes, architectural designs and are strategically located and several of it are Imago, Oceanus, Suria Sabah, City Mall, 1Borneo and Grand Merdeka. As the number of malls rise, many consumers in the developing countries have shown loyalty towards certain malls that meet and exceeds their expectations

A mathematical model was developed to predict the energy requirement for the combined effect of a disk plow and a rotary blade in clay soil suitable for wet rice cultivation in Malaysia. The developed equations can be used to predict the energy requirements for disk and rotary blade using mathCAD PLUS 6.0 software. The validity of the model was checked via experiments conducted in an indoor soil tank with the usage of an octagonal ring transducer for the disk and a torquemeter for the rotary blade. The variations between experimental and predicted values range from -1.4% to 3.3%

Non-linear Panel Data Liquidity Model of Islamic and Conventional Banks

Banks and liquidity risk are synonymous with each other due to inevitable asset-liability mismatches derived from deposit and lending activities. The study aims to investigate this issue by highlighting a new insight into the non-linear function between profitability and liquidity risk. With the aspiration to include both Islamic and conventional banks from nine Asia-Pacific countries, this study involves the unbalanced panel data of a 10-year period that covers from 2011 to 2020. The final sample ends with 285 banks and 2,116 observations. The study employs a quadratic random effect model with clusters adjusted errors comprised of five interest predictors namely profitability, credit risk, bank capital, income diversification and bank size. The findings discover profitability, bank capital, income diversification, size and economic condition play vital roles in managing banks liquidity. The findings reveal the existence of moral hazard for larger and highly capitalized banks with greater exposure to liquidity risk. High-margin banks are also prone to maintain lower liquidity levels, thus exposed to greater risk. Banks are advocated to elevate higher earnings and maintain adequate levels of capital and assets with the caution of moral hazard issues. Therefore, the regulatory body in each country is proposed to intervene and monitor especially the higher margin banks to lessen the moral hazard issue
