SU(5) grand unification on a domain-wall brane from an E_6-invariant action
An SU(5) grand unification scheme for effective 3+1-dimensional fields
dynamically localised on a domain-wall brane is constructed. This is achieved
through the confluence of the clash-of-symmetries mechanism for symmetry
breaking through domain-wall formation, and the Dvali-Shifman gauge-boson
localisation idea. It requires an E_6 gauge-invariant action, yielding a
domain-wall solution that has E_6 broken to differently embedded SO(10) x U(1)
subgroups in the two bulk regions on opposite sides of the wall. On the wall
itself, the unbroken symmetry is the intersection of the two bulk subgroups,
and contains SU(5). A 4+1-dimensional fermion family in the 27 of E_6 gives
rise to localised left-handed zero-modes in the 5^* + 10 + 1 + 1 representation
of SU(5). The remaining ten fermion components of the 27 are delocalised exotic
states, not appearing in the effective 3+1-dimensional theory on the
domain-wall brane. The scheme is compatible with the type-2 Randall-Sundrum

Misery loves company? A meta-regression examining aggregate unemployment rates and the unemployment-mortality association
Purpose:
Individual-level unemployment has been consistently linked to poor health and higher mortality, but some scholars have suggested that the negative effect of job loss may be lower during times and in places where aggregate unemployment rates are high. We review three logics associated with this moderation hypothesis: health selection, social isolation, and unemployment stigma. We then test whether aggregate unemployment rates moderate the individual-level association between unemployment and all-cause mortality.
Methods:
We use six meta-regression models (each using a different measure of the aggregate unemployment rate) based on 62 relative all-cause mortality risk estimates from 36 studies (from 15 nations).
Results:
We find that the magnitude of the individual-level unemployment-mortality association is approximately the same during periods of high and low aggregate-level unemployment. Model coefficients (exponentiated) were 1.01 for the crude unemployment rate (P = .27), 0.94 for the change in unemployment rate from the previous year (P = .46), 1.01 for the deviation of the unemployment rate from the 5-year running average (P = .87), 1.01 for the deviation of the unemployment rate from the 10-year running average (P = .73), 1.01 for the deviation of the unemployment rate from the overall average (measured as a continuous variable; P = .61), and showed no variation across unemployment levels when the deviation of the unemployment rate from the overall average was measured categorically. Heterogeneity between studies was significant (P < .001), supporting the use of the random effects model.
Conclusions:
We found no strong evidence to suggest that unemployment experiences change when macroeconomic conditions change. Efforts to ameliorate the negative social and economic consequences of unemployment should continue to focus on the individual and should be maintained regardless of periodic changes in macroeconomic conditions
Wave Function of a Brane-like Universe
Within the mini-superspace model, brane-like cosmology means performing the
variation with respect to the embedding (Minkowski) time before fixing
the cosmic (Einstein) time . The departure from Einstein limit is
parameterized by the 'energy' conjugate to , and characterized by a
classically disconnected Embryonic epoch. In contrast with canonical quantum
gravity, the wave-function of the brane-like Universe is (i) -dependent,
and (ii) vanishes at the Big Bang. Hartle-Hawking and Linde proposals dictate
discrete 'energy' levels, whereas Vilenkin proposal resembles -particle

Polar Kerr Effect as Probe for Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking in Unconventional Superconductors
The search for broken time reversal symmetry (TRSB) in unconventional
superconductors intensified in the past year as more systems have been
predicted to possess such a state. Following our pioneering study of TRSB
states in SrRuO using magneto-optic probes, we embarked on a systematic
study of several other of these candidate systems. The primary instrument for
our studies is the Sagnac magneto-optic interferometer, which we recently
developed. This instrument can measure magneto-optic Faraday or Kerr effects
with an unprecedented sensitivity of 10 nanoradians at temperatures as low as
100 mK. In this paper we review our recent studies of TRSB in several systems,
emphasizing the study of the pseudogap state of high temperature
superconductors and the inverse proximity effect in superconductor/ferromagnet

True Superconductivity in a 2D "Superconducting-Insulating" System
We present results on disordered amorphous films which are expected to
undergo a field-tuned Superconductor-Insulator Transition. Based on low-field
data and I-V characteristics, we find evidence of a low temperature
Metal-to-Superconductor transition. This transition is characterized by
hysteretic magnetoresistance and discontinuities in the I-V curves. The
metallic phase just above the transition is different from the "Fermi Metal"

Geodetic Brane Gravity
Within the framework of geodetic brane gravity, the Universe is described as
a 4-dimensional extended object evolving geodetically in a higher dimensional
flat background. In this paper, by introducing a new pair of canonical fields
{lambda, P_{lambda}}, we derive the quadratic Hamiltonian for such a brane
Universe; the inclusion of matter then resembles minimal coupling. Second class
constraints enter the game, invoking the Dirac bracket formalism. The algebra
of the first class constraints is calculated, and the BRST generator of the
brane Universe turns out to be rank-1. At the quantum level, the road is open
for canonical and/or functional integral quantization. The main advantages of
geodetic brane gravity are: (i) It introduces an intrinsic, geometrically
originated, 'dark matter' component, (ii) It offers, owing to the Lorentzian
bulk time coordinate, a novel solution to the 'problem of time', and (iii) It
enables calculation of meaningful probabilities within quantum cosmology
without any auxiliary scalar field. Intriguingly, the general relativity limit
is associated with lambda being a vanishing (degenerate) eigenvalue.Comment: 23 pages, 1 figure, minor change
Rippled Cosmological Dark Matter from Damped Oscillating Newton Constant
Let the reciprocal Newton 'constant' be an apparently non-dynamical
Brans-Dicke scalar field damped oscillating towards its General Relativistic
VEV. We show, without introducing additional matter fields or dust, that the
corresponding cosmological evolution averagely resembles, in the Jordan frame,
the familiar dark radiation -> dark matter -> dark energy domination sequence.
The fingerprints of our theory are fine ripples, hopefully testable, in the FRW
scale factor; they die away at the General Relativity limit. The possibility
