Composite polymer membranes for laserinduced fluorescence thermometry
We demonstrate a modified version of laser-induced fluorescence thermometry (LIFT) for mapping temperature gradients in the vicinity of small photothermal devices. Our approach is based on temperature sensitive fluorescent membranes fabricated with rhodamine B and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Relevant membrane features for LIFT, such as temperature sensitivity, thermal quenching and photobleaching are presented for a range of 25 °C to 90 °C, and their performance is evaluated upon obtaining the temperature gradients produced in the proximity of optical fiber micro-heaters. Our results show that temperature measurements in regions as small as 750 μm x 650 μm, with a temperature resolution of 1 °C, can be readily obtained
Extension of the correspondence principle in relativistic quantum mechanics
In this paper we apply the Bohr's correspondence principle to analize the
asymptotic behavior of the Klein-Gordon and Dirac probability densities. It is
found that in the non-relativistic limit, the densities reduce to their
respective classical single-particle probability distributions plus a series of
quantum corrections. The procedure is applied in two basic problems, the
relativistic quantum oscillator and the relativistic particle in a box. The
particle and antiparticle solutions are found to yield the same classical
distribution plus quantum correction terms for the proposed limit. In the
quantum oscillator case, a parameter modifies the probability
distribution. Its origin is briefly discussed in terms of energy.Comment: 5 page
Emotion, Psychological Well-Being and Their Influence on Resilience. A Study with Semi-Professional Athletes
The objective of the present study is to analyze the influence of coaches on emotional intelligence and on levels of anxiety, motivation, self-esteem, and resilience among athletes. Five-hundred forty-seven semi-professional athletes between the ages of 16 and 19 participated in this study. Various statistical analyses were conducted which explain the causal relationships between the variables. The results, obtained using a structural equations model, find that while autonomy support positively predicts emotional intelligence, perceived control predicts it negatively. Moreover, emotional intelligence positively predicts self-esteem and self-determined motivation, but negatively predicts anxiety. Other results show that self-esteem positively predicts self-determined motivation, whereas anxiety predicts it negatively. Finally, self-determined motivation positively predicts resilience. Indeed, the study demonstrates the influence and the importance of coaches in relation to the emotional intelligence, psychological well-being, and motivational processes of adolescent athletes when the latter engage in their respective sports. These results help to better understand how different behavioral, emotional, and social aspects belonging to the athlete interrelate with one another during competition
Validation of the Satisfaction Scale of Basic Psychological Needs in Physical Education with the Incorporation of the Novelty in the Spanish Context
The purpose of the study was to validate to the physical education context, the Spanish version of the Scale of the Satisfaction of Psychological Needs toward the Physical Education classes of Menéndez and Fernández-Rio, with the incorporation of the novelty, since they contemplated its inclusion. In this study, 1444 students participated (mean = 15.34, standard deviation = 1.12) from several schools in Almeria. To analyze the psychometric properties of the scale, several analyses were carried out. The results offered support for both the four-factor structure and the higher-order model called satisfaction. The analysis of invariance with respect to gender showed that the factor structure of the questionnaire was invariant. The Cronbach alpha values were higher than 0.70 in the subscales. The results of this study demonstrated the reliability and validity of the Scale of the Satisfaction of Psychological Needs, with the incorporation of novelty in the Spanish context of Physical Education
Unveiling two expanding stellar groups formed through violent relaxation in The Lagoon Nebula Cluster
The current kinematic state of young stellar clusters can give clues on their
actual dynamical state and origin. In this contribution, we use Gaia DR3 data
of the Lagoon Nebula Cluster (LNC) to show that the cluster is composed of two
expanding groups, likely formed from different molecular cloud clumps. We find
no evidence of massive stars having larger velocity dispersion than low-mass
stars or being spatially segregated across the LNC, as a whole, or within the
Primary group. However, the Secondary group, with 1/5th of the stars, exhibits
intriguing features. On the one hand, it shows a bipolar nature, with an aspect
ratio of 3:1. In addition, the massive stars in this group exhibit larger
velocity dispersion than the low-mass stars, although they are not concentrated
towards the center of the group. This suggests that this group may have
undergone dynamical relaxation, first, and some explosive event afterward.
However, further observations and numerical work have to be performed to
confirm this hypothesis. The results of this work suggest that, although
stellar clusters may form by the global and hierarchical collapse of their
parent clump, still some dynamical relaxation may take place.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
Physical Education Classes as a Precursor to the Mediterranean Diet and the Practice of Physical Activity
Physical activity and a healthy, balanced diet are remaining unresolved issues among young people. According to the World Health Organization, young people do not get enough exercise during the week, and physical education classes are the best way to promote healthy habits. This study aims to analyze how the role of the teacher influences the frustration of psychological needs, coping strategies, motivation, and the adoption of healthy eating habits through the Mediterranean diet and the regular practice of physical activity. The study involved 1031 boys and 910 girls between the ages of 13 and 18. To explain the relationships between the different variables included in this study, a model of structural equations has been developed. The results showed that autonomy support negatively predicted the frustration of four psychological needs. The failure to meet four psychological needs negatively predicted resilience. Likewise, resilience positively predicted autonomous motivation, and this positively predicted the Mediterranean diet and the practice of physical activity. Thus, the results obtained in the present study are in line with those of various studies wherein physical education classes were seen to help consolidate healthy living habits
Experimental investigation of dynamical invariants in bipartite entanglement
The non-conservation of entanglement, when two or more particles interact,
sets it apart from other dynamical quantities like energy and momentum. It does
not allow the interpretation of the subtle dynamics of entanglement as a flow
of this quantity between the constituents of the system. Here we show that
adding a third party to a two-particle system may lead to a conservation law
that relates the quantities characterizing the bipartite entanglement between
each of the parties and the other two. We provide an experimental demonstration
of this idea using entangled photons, and generalize it to N-partite GHZ
states
Fundamental care and knowledge interests: implications for nursing science
Aims and objectives: The aim of this discursive paper was to characterize the intra-theoretical interests of knowledge in nursing science as an epistemological framework for fundamental care.
Background: For Jürgen Habermas, theory does not separate knowledge interests from life. All knowledge, understanding and human research is always interested. Habermas formulated the knowledge interests in empirical-analytical, historical hermeneutic and critical social sciences; but said nothing about health sciences and nursing science.
Design: Discursive paper.
Results: The paper is organised into five sections that develop our argument about the implications of the Habermasian intra theoretical interests in nursing science and fundamental care: the persistence of a technical interest, the predominance of a practical interest, the importance of an emancipatory interest, “being there” to understand individuals’ experience and an “existential crisis” that uncovers the individual’s subjectivity.
Conclusions: The nursing discipline can take on practical and emancipatory interests (together with a technical interest) as its fundamental knowledge interests. Nurses’ privileged position in the delivery of fundamental care gives them the opportunity to gain a deep understanding of the patient’s experience and illness process through physical contact and empathic communication.
Relevance to clinical practice and nursing research: In clinical, academic and research environments, nurses should highlight the importance of fundamental care, showcasing the value of practical and emancipatory knowledge. This process could help to improve nursing science’s leadership, social visibility and idiosyncrasy
A young double stellar cluster in a HII region, emerging from its parent molecular cloud
We report the properties of a new young double stellar cluster in the region
towards IRAS 07141-0920 contained in the HII region Sh2-294. High-resolution
optical UBVRI and Halpha images, near-infrared JHKs and H2 filter images were
used to make photometric and morphological studies of the point sources and the
nebula seen towards Sh2-294. The optical images reveal an emission nebula with
very rich morphological details, composed mainly of UV scattered light and of
Halpha emission. Contrasting with the bright parts of the nebula, opaque,
elongated patches are seen. Our optical photometry confirms that the
illuminator of the nebula is likely to be a B0.5V star located at a distance of
about 3.2 kpc. Our near-IR images reveal an embedded cluster, extending for
about 2 pc and exhibiting sub-clustering: a denser, more condensed, sub-cluster
surrounding the optical high-mass B0.5V illuminator star; and a more embedded,
optically invisible, sub-cluster located towards the eastern, dark part of the
nebula and including the luminous MSX source G224.1880+01.2407, a massive
protostellar candidate that could be the origin of jets and extended features
seen at 2.12 micron. The double cluster appears to be clearing the remaining
molecular material of the parent cloud, creating patches of lower extinction
and allowing some of the least reddened members to be detected in the optical
images. We find 12 MS and 143 PMS members using 3 different methods: comparison
with isochrones in optical colour-magnitude diagrams, detection of near-IR
excess, and presence of Halpha emission. The most massive star fits a 4 Myr
post-MS isochrone. The age of the optically selected PMS population is
estimated to be 7-8 Myr. The IR-excess population shows sub-clustering on
scales as small as 0.23 pc and is probably much younger.Comment: 15 pages, 16 figure
