Electroweak constraints on warped models with custodial symmetry
It has been recently argued that realistic models with warped extra
dimensions can have Kaluza-Klein particles accessible at the Large Hadron
Collider if a custodial symmetry, SU(2)_V \times P_{LR}, is used to protect the
T parameter and the coupling of the left-handed bottom quark to the Z gauge
boson. In this article we emphasize that such a symmetry implies that the loop
corrections to both the T parameter and the Z b_L \bar{b}_L coupling are
calculable. In general, these corrections are correlated, can be sizable, and
should be considered to determine the allowed parameter space region in models
with warped extra dimensions and custodial symmetry, including Randall-Sundrum
models with a fundamental Higgs, models of gauge-Higgs unification and
Higgsless models. As an example, we derive the constraints that arise on a
representative model of gauge-Higgs unification from a global fit to the
precision electroweak observables. A scan over the parameter space typically
leads to a lower bound on the Kaluza-Klein excitations of the gauge bosons of
about 2-3 TeV, depending on the configuration. In the fermionic sector one can
have Kaluza-Klein excitations with masses of a few hundred GeV. We present the
constraints on these light fermions from recent Tevatron searches, and explore
interesting discovery channels at the LHC.Comment: 38 pages, 8 figure
BELIEFS ABOUT ILLNESS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH HOPELESSNESS, DEPRESSION, INSIGHT AND SUICIDE ATTEMPTS IN SCHIZOPHRENIA
Background: Although the negative appraisals of the illness may be related to suicidal thinking and behaviours in
schizophrenia, this has been insufficiently studied. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between schizophrenic
patients\u27 cognitions about their illness and past suicidal behaviours. The relationship between patients\u27 beliefs about their illness
with potential mediators of suicidal behaviours such as depressive symptoms, hopelessness and insight was also investigated.
Subjects and methods: A group of 60 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia according to ICD-10 criteria belonging to a followup
study were assessed one year after their last psychiatric admission. Psychopathological variables were assessed by the Calgary
Depression Scale, Beck Hopelessness Scale and the first three items of the Scale to Assess Unawareness of Mental Disorder. The
appraisals of the illness were assessed by the Personal Beliefs about Illness Questionnaire.
Results: Negative appraisals were associated with hopelessness and depressive symptoms. Negative expectations and stigma
showed the strongest associations. Contrary to our expectations, this scale was not able to differentiate between patients with and
without past suicidal behaviour.
Conclusions: Negative appraisals of the illness in patients with schizophrenia seem to have psychopathological consequences
such as greater hopelessness and depression. Since these psychopathological features are linked to suicidal risk, the
psychotherapeutic approach counteracting negative beliefs about the illness may reduce the risk of suicide
Configuration space partitioning in tilings of a bounded region of the plane
Given a finite collection of two-dimensional tile types, the field of study
concerned with covering the plane with tiles of these types exclusively has a
long history, having enjoyed great prominence in the last six to seven decades.
Much of this interest has revolved around fundamental geometrical problems such
as minimizing the variety of tile types to be used, and also around important
applications in areas such as crystallography as well as others. All these
applications are of course confined to finite spatial regions, but in many
cases they refer back directly to progress in tiling the whole, unbounded
plane. Tilings of bounded regions of the plane have also been actively studied,
but in general the additional complications imposed by the boundary conditions
tend to constrain progress to mostly indirect results, such as recurrence
relations. Here we study the tiling of rectangular regions of the plane by
rectangular tiles. The tile types we use are squares, dominoes, and straight
tetraminoes. For this set of tile types, not even recurrence relations seem to
be available. Our approach is to seek to characterize this complex system
through some fundamental physical quantities. We do this on two parallel
tracks, one analytical for what seems to be the most complex special case still
amenable to such approach, the other based on the Wang-Landau method for
state-density estimation. Given a simple energy function based solely on tile
contacts, we have found either approach to lead to illuminating depictions of
entropy, temperature, and above all partitions of the configuration space. The
notion of a configuration, in this context, refers to how many tiles of each
type are used. We have found that certain partitions help bind together
different aspects of the system in question and conjecture that future
applications will benefit from the possibilities they afford.Comment: This version includes minor fixes and a new table, and updates

Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis and Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding in Child
Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) is reemerging in Peru. VEE virus subtype ID in Peru has not been previously associated with severe disease manifestations. In 2006, VEE virus subtype ID was isolated from a boy with severe febrile disease and gastrointestinal bleeding; the strain contained 2 mutations within the PE2 region
PRODUCTIVIDAD DE DOS CULTIVARES DE PASTO Brachiaria brizantha (LA LIBERTAD Y MULATO), HACIENDA LAS MERCEDES, UNA, MANAGUA, NICARAGUA
Urinary Excretion of Mimosine Derivatives by Cows with and without Experience in Consumption of \u3cem\u3eLeucaena leucocephala\u3c/em\u3e
Leucaena leucocephala is a leguminous tree widely distributed in the tropical regions of the world. In Mexico, it has been incorporated into silvopastoral systems and is highly regarded, owing to its high content of crude protein. Nonetheless, L. leucocephala contains secondary metab-olites, such as mimosine, a non-protein free amino acid, which may induce toxic effects in unadapted ruminants that consume the forage (Hammond 1995). Although Synergistes jonesii, an anaerobic bacterium, has the ability to degrade 3,4-DHP and 2,3-DHP to non-toxic compounds (Allison et al. 1992), in Mexico its presence has not yet been confirmed. Recent work has suggested the occurrence of sub-clinical toxicity to 3,4-DHP and 2,3-DHP in cattle grazing L. leucocephala in Australia and Thailand (Graham 2007; Dalzell et al. 2012; Phaikaew et al. 2012). Several options such as the transfer of rumen liquor and the adaptation of ruminants to the intake of L. leucocephala have been studied in an attempt to reduce the excretion of mimosine and its metabolites (Palmer et al. 2010).
The aim of the present work was to evaluate the effect of the experience of consumption of L. leucocephala on excretion of mimosine derivatives (3,4-DHP and 2,3-DHP) in the urine of cattle
Results of the engineering run of the coherent neutrino nucleus interaction experiment (CONNIE)
The CONNIE detector prototype is operating at a distance of 30 m from the core of a 3.8 GWth nuclear reactor with the goal of establishing Charge-Coupled Devices (CCD) as a new technology for the detection of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. We report on the results of the engineering run with an active mass of 4 g of silicon. The CCD array is described, and the performance observed during the first year is discussed. A compact passive shield was deployed around the detector, producing an order of magnitude reduction in the background rate. The remaining background observed during the run was stable, and dominated by internal contamination in the detector packaging materials. The in-situ calibration of the detector using X-ray lines from fluorescence demonstrates good stability of the readout system. The event rates with the reactor ON and OFF are compared, and no excess is observed coming from nuclear fission at the power plant. The upper limit for the neutrino event rate is set two orders of magnitude above the expectations for the standard model. The results demonstrate the cryogenic CCD-based detector can be remotely operated at the reactor site with stable noise below2 e RMS and stable background rates. The success of the engineering test provides a clear path for the upgraded 100 g detector to be deployed during 2016.Fil: Aguilar Arevalo, A.. First-Episode Psychotic Patients Showed Longitudinal Brain Changes Using fMRI With an Emotional Auditory Paradigm
Most previous longitudinal studies of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in first-episode psychosis (FEP) using cognitive paradigm task found an increased activation after antipsychotic medications. We designed an emotional auditory paradigm to explore brain activation during emotional and nonemotional word processing. This study aimed to analyze if longitudinal changes in brain fMRI BOLD activation is present in patients vs. healthy controls. A group of FEP patients (n = 34) received clinical assessment and had a fMRI scan at baseline and follow-up (average, 25-month interval). During the fMRI scan, both emotional and nonemotional words were presented as a block design. Results were compared with a pair of healthy control group (n = 13). Patients showed a decreased activation at follow-up fMRI in amygdala (F = 4.69; p = 0.04) and hippocampus (F = 5.03; p = 0.03) compared with controls. Middle frontal gyrus was the only area that showed a substantial increased activation in patients (F = 4.53; p = 0.04). A great heterogeneity in individual activation patterns was also found. These results support the relevance of the type of paradigm in neuroimaging for psychosis. This is, as far as we know, the first longitudinal study with an emotional auditory paradigm in FEP. Our results suggested that the amygdala and hippocampus play a key role in psychotic disease. More studies are needed to understand the heterogeneity of response at individual level
Large Nc QCD and Harmonic Sums
In the Large-Nc limit of QCD, two--point functions of local operators become
Harmonic Sums. I review some properties which follow from this fact and which
are relevant for phenomenological applications. This has led us to consider a
class of Analytic Number Theory Functions as toy models of Large-Nc QCD which I
also discuss.Comment: Based on my talk at "Raymond Stora's 80th Birthday Party", LAPP, July
