    Hyperprolinemia as a clue in the diagnosis of a patient with psychiatric manifestations

    Lately, microdeletions of the 22q region, responsible for DiGeorge syndrome or velocardiofacial syndrome, have been increasingly related to neuropsychiatric disorders including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. These manifestations seem to be related to certain genes located in the hemideleted region such as the proline dehydrogenase (PRODH) and the catechol-o-methyltransferase (COMT) genes. We describe a teenager who started his adolescent psychiatric care presenting cognitive impairment, irritable mood and aggressive behaviour with schizophrenia-like symptoms that scored 153 in the Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale (PANSS) assessment. Worsening of symptoms when the patient was treated with valproic acid, and plasma aminoacids showing an increase in alanine and proline, suggested a mitochondrial involvement of the proline metabolic pathway. Mild dysmorphic features also suggested a possible 22q11 deletion syndrome that was confirmed. A mutation for Hyperprolinemia type I was also detected.     Sliding mode control of an innovative single-switch three-level active rectifier

    This paper presents the sliding mode control (SMC) applied to an innovative active rectifier. This proposed active rectifier is constituted by a single-switch, and operates with three voltage levels, evidencing a set of advantages when compared with conventional approaches of power factor correction topologies. Taking into account the diversity of applications for this type of power converter, the SMC is used in order to obtain a robust current tracking. Since the active rectifier is controlled according to the ac grid-side current, the error between such current and its reference is determined, and by employing the SMC, this error is minimized during each sampling period with the objective of selecting the state of the single-switch. A comprehensive description about the SMC implementation, supported by the overall operation of the active rectifier, is presented throughout the paper. The obtained computational results for a set of different operating conditions, comprising significant power ranges and sudden variations, confirm the accurate application of the SMC when applied to the proposed single-switch three-level active rectifier.     A novel multilevel converter for on-grid interface of renewable energy sources in smart grids

    The on-grid interface of renewable energy sources involves a dc-ac converter for controlling the injected current. In this perspective, a novel topology of grid-tied converter is proposed, assuming as main feature the produced multilevel voltages (five-levels). The proposed grid-tied converter is intended for on-grid interfaces, which is controlled for guaranteeing sinusoidal currents for all grid voltage conditions. The dc-side can be linked directly to a dc-to-dc intermediary converter, responsible for interfacing renewable energy sources, as solar photovoltaic or wind power systems. Throughout the paper, a complete examination of the operation principle and the adopted control theory, including current control, as well as hardware project, are comprehensively presented. An accurate computational simulation validation is presented, comprising realistic operating conditions in terms of grid voltage disturbances and operating power.     Comparative analysis of power electronics topologies to interface dc homes with the electrical ac power grid

    This paper presents a comparative analysis of power electronics topologies that can be used to interface dc homes with a 230 V, 50 Hz ac power grid. Dc homes represent an essential asset for smart grids, since energy storage systems and renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaic solar panels, operate in dc, as well as most of the electrical appliances used in domestic scenario. However, since the power grid operates in ac, it is necessary to convert voltage from ac to dc to properly supply a dc home. This conversion can be accomplished in several ways, with different power conversion stages. In this context, this paper analyzes three different possibilities that can be used to perform the interface between the ac power grid and a dc home: (1) ac-dc converter using a low frequency transformer; (2) ac-dc and dc-dc converters using a high frequency transformer; (3) ac-ac and ac-dc converters using a medium frequency transformer. These three possibilities are compared in terms of efficiency, total power factor and total harmonic distortion of the ac power grid.     Conformational studies of peptides representing a segment of TM7 from H+-VO-ATPase in SDS micelles

    The conformation of a transmembrane peptide, sMTM7, encompassing the cytoplasmic hemi-channel domain of the seventh transmembrane section of subunit a from V-ATPase from Saccharomyces cerevisiae solubilized in SDS solutions was studied by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy of the single tryptophan residue of this peptide. The results show that the peptide adopts an α-helical conformation or aggregated β-sheet depending on the peptide-to-SDS ratio used. The results are compared with published data about a longer version of the peptide (i.e., MTM7). It is concluded that the bulky, positively charged arginine residue located in the center of both peptides has a destabilizing effect on the helical conformation of the SDS-solubilized peptides, leading to β-sheet formation and subsequent aggregation

    Reactivity of paraquat with sodium salicylate: formation of stable complexes

    Sodium salicylate (NaSAL) has been shown to be a promising antidote for the treatment of paraquat (PQ) poisonings. The modulation of the pro-oxidant and pro-inflammatory pathways, as well as the antithrombogenic properties of NaSAL are probably essential features for the healing effects provided by this drug. Nevertheless, a possible direct chemical reactivity between PQ and NaSAL is also a putative pathway to be considered, this hypothesis being the ground of the present study. In accordance, it is shown, for the first time that PQ and NaSAL react immediately in aqueous medium and within 2–3 min in the solid state. Photographs and scanning electron photomicrographs indicated that a new chemical entity is formed when both compounds are mixed. This assumption was corroborated by the evaluation of the melting point, and through several analytical techniques, namely ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (GC/MS/MS), liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC/ESI/MS/MS) and infrared spectroscopy, which revealed that stable charge-transfer complexes are formed when PQ is mixed with NaSAL. LC/ESI/MS/MS allowed obtaining the stoichiometry of the charge-transfer complexes. In order to increase resolution, single value decomposition, acting as a filter, showed that the chargetransfer complexes withm/z 483, 643 and 803 correspond to the pseudo-molecular ions, respectively 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4 (PQ:NaSAL). In conclusion, these results provided a new and important mechanism of action of NaSAL against the toxicity mediated by PQ

    Muography in the university and in the museum

    The LouMu team joins together specialists in particle detectors and in cosmic ray analyses, geophysicists and science communicators to muograph an underground gallery of an old mine, now open to visitors of a science museum. The muon telescope is made of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) developed to operate stably and with low consumption at remote locations, and it has been tested in the Coimbra University, before being moved to an underground gallery in the Lousal Cieˆncia Viva Science Center, in Portugal. In parallel to the scientific goals of surveying the geological faults around the gallery, comparing and combining the information from muography and other techniques, and testing and possibly upgrading these detectors for muography, the project aims to engage students at several levels and the public at large. The telescope was thought to operate in front of visitors, all the project phases will be documented, and the muographic data collected in the university building and the mine gallery will be made available for educational use. Providing an almost online update of simple and complex muographies is a challenge but provides an opportunity for a valued interaction of the public with our usually distant work.The LouMu project would not be possible without the support of the Mine of Science, Centro Cieˆncia Viva do Lousal.     Predicting volleyball serve-reception at group level

    In a group-serve-reception task, how does serve-reception become effective? We addressed "who" receives/passes the ball, what task-related variables predict action mode selection and whether the action mode selected was associated with reception efficacy. In 182 serve-receptions we tracked the ball and the receivers' heads with two video-cameras to generate 3D world-coordinates reconstructions. We defined receivers' reception-areas based on Voronoi diagrams (VD). Our analyses of the data showed that this approach was accurate in describing "who" receives the serve in 95.05% of the times. To predict action mode selection, we used variables related to: serve kinematics, receiver's movement and on-court positioning, the relation between receiver and his closest partner, and interactions between receiver-ball and receiver-target. Serve's higher initial velocities together with higher maximum height, as well as smaller longitudinal distances between receiver and target increased the chances for the use of the overhand pass. Conversely, decreasing alignment of the receiver with the ball and the target increased the chances of using the underhand-lateral pass. Finally, the use of the underhand-lateral pass was associated with lower quality receptions. Behavioural variability's relevance for serve-reception training is discussed
