Genetic Analysis of the Fatty Acid Profile in Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata L.).

The gilthead seabream is one of the most valuable species in the Mediterranean basin both for fisheries and aquaculture. Marine fish, such as gilthead seabream, are a source of n3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, highly appreciated for human food owing to their benefits on the cardiovascular and immune systems. The aim of the present study was to estimate heritability for fatty acid (FA) profile in fillet gilthead seabream to be considered as a strategy of a selective breeding program. Total of 399 fish, from a broodstock Mediterranean Sea, were analysed for growth, flesh composition and FA profile. Heritabilities for growth traits, and flesh composition (fat, protein, and moisture content) were medium. Heritability was moderate for 14:0, 16:0 and 18:1n9 and for sum of monounsaturated FA and n6/n3 ratio, and it was low for 20:1n11 and 22:6n3 and the ratio unsaturated/saturated FA. Breeding programs in gilthead seabream usually include growth as the first criterion in the selection process of the fish. However, other quality traits, such as fillet fat content and its fatty acids profile should be considered, since they are very important traits for the consumer, from a nutritional point of view and the benefits for the health.Versión del edito

This project promotes technology developments for gilthead sea bream industrial sector of Spain, to facilitate and normalize the implementation of genetic selection schemes in this species, by defining new technological traits of commercial interest, with new standardized and extensible technological developments that permit, in an economical manner, normalized measuring methods, to study genetic parameters (growth, morphology, carcass and resistance disease), genotype-environment interaction to extend the Spanish production, and guarantee the production levels to the whole production chain.

Wide transparency range and high refractive index lead–niobium-germanate glass thin films

Lead-niobium-germanate glass thin films have been produced by pulsed laser deposition in a broad O2 pressure range (10-6-10 -1 mbar). The cation composition in the films approaches that of the glass target for a pressure of 10-2 mbar. The oxygen content is only close to or above that of the glass for a pressure close to 10-1 mbar, for which a Pb enrichment is also observed. Films grown in vacuum are highly absorbing, whereas transparent films with an absorption edge shifted to the UV with respect to the bulk glass are produced for pressures higher than 10-2 mbar. The evolution of the optical energy gap and the refractive index of the films with the oxygen pressure is correlated to the changes observed in the film composition and discussed in terms of the features of the deposition process, the role of oxygen in the formation of the glass network and the progressive increase of the oxidation state of the cations as the oxygen pressure is increased.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología MAT2000-1135-C02-0

Euclid. I. Overview of the Euclid mission

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. We also highlight the main science objectives and expected performance
