Magnetic Resonance (MR) rectography in diagnostics of small-size rectal neoplasms
Purpose was the assessment of diagnostic efficiency of MR-rectography in diagnostics of small-size rectal neoplasms. 12 patients with polyps and small tumors of a rectum are examined, the size of detected neoplasms varied in the range 3-18 mm. Native MRI and MRI with retrograde contrasting by ultrasonic gel was carried out. Results of MRI are compared with results of videocolonoscopy. Sensitivity of native MRT was 24%, MR- rectography was 88%. MR-rectography can be used in diagnostics of small-size rectal neoplasms
Search For Companions Of Nearby Isolated Galaxies
The radial velocities are measured for 45 galaxies located in the
neighborhoods of 29 likely isolated galaxies in a new catalog. We find that
about 85% of these galaxies actually are well isolated objects. 4% of nearby
galaxies with V_LG<3500 km/s are this kind of cosmic "orphan".Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure
Low temperature spin fluctuations in geometrically frustrated Yb3Ga5O12
In the garnet structure compound Yb3Ga5O12, the Yb3+ ions (ground state
effective spin S' = 1/2) are situated on two interpenetrating corner sharing
triangular sublattices such that frustrated magnetic interactions are possible.
Previous specific heat measurements evidenced the development of short range
magnetic correlations below 0.5K and a lambda-transition at 54mK (Filippi et
al. J. Phys. C: Solid State Physics 13 (1980) 1277). From 170-Yb M"ossbauer
spectroscopy measurements down to 36mK, we find there is no static magnetic
order at temperatures below that of the lambda-transition. Below 0.3K, the
fluctuation frequency of the short range correlated Yb3+ moments progressively
slows down and as the temperature tends to 0, the frequency tends to a
quasi-saturated value of 3 x 10^9 s^-1. We also examined the Yb3+ paramagnetic
relaxation rates up to 300K using 172-Yb perturbed angular correlation
measurements: they evidence phonon driven processes.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Evaluation of Antioxidant Properties of Phaulopsis fascisepala C.B.Cl. (Acanthaceae)
The antioxidant activities of crude extract of Phaulopsis fascisepala leaf were evaluated and compared with α-tocopherol and BHT as synthetic antioxidants and ascorbic acid as natural-based antioxidant. In vitro, we studied its antioxidative activities, radical-scavenging effects, Fe2+-chelating ability and reducing power. The total phenolic content was determined and expressed in gallic acid equivalent. The extract showed variable activities in all of these in vitro tests. The antioxidant effect of P. fascisepala was strongly dose dependent, increased with increasing leaf extract dose and then leveled off with further increase in extract dose. Compared to other antioxidants used in the study, α-Tocopherol, ascorbic acid and BHT, P. fascisepala leaf extract showed less scavenging effect on α,α,-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and less reducing power on Fe3+/ferricyanide complex but better Fe2+-chelating ability. These results revealed the in vitro antioxidant activity of P. fascisepala. Further investigations are necessary to verify these activities in vivo
Six-dimensional Davidson potential as a dynamical symmetry of the symplectic Interacting Vector Boson Model
A six-dimensional Davidson potential, introduced within the framework of the
Interacting Vector Boson Model (IVBM), is used to describe nuclei that exhibit
transitional spectra between the purely rotational and vibrational limits of
the theory. The results are shown to relate to a new dynamical symmetry that
starts with the reduction. Exact
solutions for the eigenstates of the model Hamiltonian in the basis defined by
a convenient subgroup chain of SO(6) are obtained. A comparison of the
theoretical results with experimental data for heavy nuclei with transitional

Superradiance from an ultrathin film of three-level V-type atoms: Interplay between splitting, quantum coherence and local-field effects
We carry out a theoretical study of the collective spontaneous emission
(superradiance) from an ultrathin film comprised of three-level atoms with
-configuration of the operating transitions. As the thickness of the system
is small compared to the emission wavelength inside the film, the local-field
correction to the averaged Maxwell field is relevant. We show that the
interplay between the low-frequency quantum coherence within the subspace of
the upper doublet states and the local-field correction may drastically affect
the branching ratio of the operating transitions. This effect may be used for
controlling the emission process by varying the doublet splitting and the
amount of low-frequency coherence.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
The double sheath on cathodes of discharges burning in cathode vapour
International audienceThe model of a collisionless near-cathode space-charge sheath with ionization of atoms emitted by the cathode surface is considered. Numerical calculations showed that the mathematical problem is solvable and its solution is unique. In the framework of this model, the sheath represents a double layer with a potential maximum, with the ions which are produced before the maximum returning to the cathode surface and those produced after the maximum escaping into the plasma. Numerical results are given in a form to be readily applicable in analysis of discharges burning in cathode vapor, such as vacuum arcs. In particular, the results indicate that the ion backflow coefficient in such discharges is at least 53%, in agreement with values extracted from the experiment
The hydrodynamic efficiency of laser-target acceleration
The acceleration of a thin foil using a laser pulse is studied. It is shown that the acceleration efficiency eta H is heavily dependent on the behaviour of the corona ejected by the foil: there is no universal relation eta H( Delta M/M0),M0 and Delta M being initial foil mass and ablated mass, respectively. Known results on the coronal flow are used to check the theory against experimental data available in the literature; effects due to both a non-planar corona, and the time-dependence of the laser irradiance, are considered. The agreement with experiments is substantially better than that for previous analyses. Acceleration of thin spherical shells is also discussed
GRP78 Knockdown Enhances Apoptosis via the Down-Regulation of Oxidative Stress and Akt Pathway after Epirubicin Treatment in Colon Cancer DLD-1 Cells
INTRODUCTION: The 78-kDa glucose-regulated protein (GRP78) is induced in the cancer microenvironment and can be considered as a novel predictor of responsiveness to chemotherapy in many cancers. In this study, we found that intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) nuclear translocation were higher in GRP78 knockdown DLD-1 colon cancer cells compared with scrambled control cells. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Treatment with epirubicin in GRP78 knockdown DLD-1 cells enhanced apoptosis and was associated with decreased production of intracellular ROS. In addition, apoptosis was increased by the antioxidants propyl gallate (PG) and dithiothreitol (DTT) in epirubicin-treated scrambled control cells. Epirubicin-treated GRP78 knockdown cells resulted in more inactivated Akt pathway members, such as phosphorylated Akt and GSK-3β, as well as downstream targets of β-catenin expression. Knockdown of Nrf2 with small interfering RNA (siRNA) increased apoptosis in epirubicin-treated GRP78 knockdown cells, which suggested that Nrf2 may be a primary defense mechanism in GRP78 knockdown cells. We also demonstrated that epirubicin-treated GRP78 knockdown cells could decrease survival pathway signaling through the redox activation of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), which is a serine/threonine phosphatase that negatively regulates the Akt pathway. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that epirubicin decreased the intracellular ROS in GRP78 knockdown cells, which decreased survival signaling through both the Akt pathway and the activation of PP2A. Together, these mechanisms contributed to the enhanced level of epirubicin-induced apoptosis that was observed in the GRP78 knockdown cells
Detailed Kinematic Study of the Ionized and Neutral Gas in the Complex of Star Formation in the Galaxy IC 1613
We carried out detailed kinematic studies of the complex of multiple HI and
HII shells that represent the only region of ongoing star formation in the
dwarf irregular galaxy IC 1613. We investigated the ionized-gas kinematics by
using Fabry--Perot H-alpha observations with the 6-m Special Astrophysical
Observatory telescope and the neutral-gas kinematics by using VLA 21-cm radio
observations. We identified three extended (300-350 pc) neutral shells with
which the brightest HII shells in the complex of star formation are associated.
The neutral-gas kinematics in the complex has been studied for the first time
and the H~I shells were found to expand at a velocity of 15--18 km/s. We
constructed velocity ellipses for all HII shells in the complex and refined
(increased) the expansion velocities of most of them. The nature of the
interacting ionized and neutral shells is discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 9 EPS-figure
