Can ‘New Welfare’ Address Poverty through More and Better Jobs?

    Get PDF
New welfare has been prominent in recent European social policy debates. It involves mobilising more people into paid work, improving human capital and ensuring fairer access to opportunities. This programme is attractive to business (more workers, better human capital and reduced social conflict to enhance productivity and profitability) and to citizens (more widely accessible job-opportunities with better rewards): a relatively low-cost approach to the difficulties governments face in maintaining support and meeting social goals as inequalities widen. The general move towards ‘new welfare’ gathered momentum during the past two decades, given extra impetus by the 2007-9 recession and subsequent stagnation. While employment rates rose during the prosperous years before the crisis, there was no commensurate reduction in poverty. Over the same period the share of economic growth returned to labour fell, labour markets were increasingly de-regulated and inequality increased. This raises the question of whether new welfare’s economic (higher employment, improved human capital) and social (better job quality and incomes) goals may come into conflict. This paper examines data for 17 European countries over the period 2001 to 2007. It shows that new welfare is much more successful at achieving higher employment than at reducing poverty, even during prosperity, and that the approach pays insufficient attention to structural factors, such as the falling wage share, and to institutional issues, such as labour market deregulation

Anime Trend as An Advert Genre in Indonesian Youtube

    Get PDF
Anime is a loanword from English 'animation' which is absorbed into Japanese. The rise of anime fans among teenagers in recent years has led companies to increase sales by using product marketing in the form of anime-style advertising media on television. This scientific articles aim to find out about anime trends in Indonesia and what their impact is on the advertising media for a product in Indonesia. This study was conducted by applying the qualitative method of which the discussion was presented descriptively. The data of this study were obtained by using observation and note taking technique. The results of this study indicate that there is an increase in the number of viewers on anime-style advertisements compared to non-anime-style ads. &nbsp

Tattoo Artist Ergonomics: An Educational Video Series

    Get PDF
Individuals who are tattoo artists experience hazards in their workplace by sitting and using repetitive movements for extended periods of time in poor postures and positions. The improper use of ergonomics impacts their daily occupational performance, work productivity, well-being, and overall quality of life. The hazards in the workplace can reduce one’s motivation, dictate one’s habits, routines, roles, and ability to complete meaningful activities. The problem is that tattoo artists are not trained in injury prevention which predisposes them to develop injuries. The purpose of this capstone project is to address this problem and develop an educational video series for tattoo artists on ergonomic principles that can be facilitated in the tattoo studio. The process of this project consists of three phases: (a) the data gathering phase, (b) the development phase, and (c) the recording and reviewing phase. The video series consists of 10 videos that address different ergonomic principles that provide tattoo artists with evidence-based recommendations. The development of this capstone project will expand occupational therapy (OT) literature and practice by creating a base of education for the tattoo industry.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2024/1032/thumbnail.jp

Density of states of interacting quantum wires with impurities: A Dyson equation approach

    Get PDF
International audienceWe calculate the density of states for an interacting quantum wire in the presence of two impurities of arbitrary potential strength. To perform this calculation, we describe the Coulomb interactions in the wire within the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory. After establishing and solving the Dyson equation for the fermionic retarded Green's functions, we study how the profile of the local density of states is affected by the interactions in the entire range of impurity potentials. Same as in the non-interacting case, when increasing the impurity strength, the central part of the wire becomes more and more disconnected from the semi-infinite leads, and discrete localized states begin to form; the width and the periodicity of the corresponding peaks in the spectrum depends on the interaction strength. As expected from the Luttinger liquid theory, impurities also induce a reduction of the local density of states at small energies. Two other important aspects are highlighted: the appearance of an extra modulation in the density of states at nonzero Fermi momentum when interactions are present, and the fact that forward scattering must be taken into account in order to recover the Coulomb-blockade regime for strong impurities

Clogging by sieving in microchannels: Application to the detection of contaminants in colloidal suspensions

We report on a microfluidic method that allows measurement of a small concentration of large contaminants in suspensions of solid micrometer-scale particles. To perform the measurement, we flow the colloidal suspension through a series of constrictions, i.e. a microchannel of varying cross-section. We show and quantify the role of large contaminants in the formation of clogs at a constriction and the growth of the resulting filter cake. By measuring the time interval between two clogging events in an array of parallel microchannels, we are able to estimate the concentration of contaminants whose size is selected by the geometry of the microfluidic device. This technique for characterizing colloidal suspensions offers a versatile and rapid tool to explore the role of contaminants on the properties of the suspensions
