    In an action for breach of warranty, defendants\u27 motion for a directed verdict was denied and verdict was directed for plaintiff. Defendants\u27 motion for a new trial was denied, and no motion was made for judgment in accordance with their previous motion for directed verdict. The circuit court of appeals reversed and remanded, with directions to enter judgment for defendants. On certiorari, held, reversed. Since defendants had not made timely motion for judgment under Rule 50 (b), the circuit court had no power to direct entry of judgment in their favor. Globe Liquor Co. v.     Undisputed evidence established that petitioner, a negro boy of fifteen, was arrested at about midnight, October 19, 1945 and taken to police headquarters. He was questioned by the police with no friend or counsel present. He was not informed of his right to counsel or of his right to refuse to answer. At about five in the morning, October 20, he confessed. He was then informed of his rights and his statement taken and transcribed. He was photographed by a newspaper photographer, and then placed in jail. On October 23 he was, for the first time, taken before a magistrate and charged with murder. While the accused was in jail, prior to arraignment but after confessing, a lawyer twice attempted to see him and was refused admittance. His mother was not permitted to see him until October 25. There was ample evidence for a conviction had the confession not been used. The jury which found the confession to be voluntary returned a verdict of guilty. Conviction was affirmed by the court of appeals, and appeal to the Supreme Court of Ohio was dismissed. On certiorari, held, reversed. The confession was not voluntary and its use at the trial violated the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Haley v. State, (U.S. 1948) 68 S.Ct. 302

    Surface Analysis of OFE-Copper X-Band Accelerating Structures and Possible Correlation to RF Breakdown Events

    X-band accelerator structures meeting the Next Linear Collider (NLC) design requirements have been found to suffer vacuum surface damage caused by radio frequency (RF) breakdown, when processed to high electric-field gradients. Improved understanding of these breakdown events is desirable for the development of structure designs, fabrication procedures, and processing techniques that minimize structure damage. RF reflected wave analysis and acoustic sensor pickup have provided breakdowns localization in RF structures. Particle contaminations found following clean autopsy of four RF-processed travelling wave structures, have been catalogued and analyzed.     Expression of Cadherin-11 during Organogenesis in the Chick Embryo

    Cadherin-11 (cad-11) is primarily a mesenchymal cadherin that appears in delaminating neural crest cells. Its expression correlates with morphogenetic events and the pattern has been studied in mouse, rat and Xenopus embryos, but not during avian organogenesis. Our purpose was to investigate this pattern in the chick embryo during organogenesis using immunolocalization and in situ hybridization. Cad-11 was expressed in mesenchyme around the pharynx and aortic arches, eyes, auditory vesicles, lung buds, stomach, and nasal placodes. Neural expression included some cranial ganglia and also new neuroepithelium within the tail bud region undergoing secondary neurulation. We also found expression in epithelia of the developing circulatory and digestive organs. The limb buds, pineal rudiment and mesonephros were also positive. Cad-11 expression became more widespread with development. Our findings support the role of cad-11 as a mesenchymal cadherin, but provide evidence for a wider role that includes epithelial morphogenesis and secondary neurulation

    Using three-phase flow of immiscible liquids to prevent coalescence of droplets in microfluidic channels: Criteria to identify the third liquid and validation with protein crystallization

    This manuscript describes the effect of interfacial tensions on three-phase liquid-liquid-liquid flow in microfluidic channels and the use of this flow to prevent microfluidic plugs from coalescing. One problem in using microfluidic plugs as microreactors is the coalescence of adjacent plugs caused by the relative motion of plugs during flow. Here, coalescence of reagent plugs was eliminated by using plugs of a third immiscible liquid as spacers to separate adjacent reagent plugs. This work tested the requirements of interfacial tensions for plugs of a third liquid to be effective spacers. Two candidates satisfying the requirements were identified, and one of these liquids was used in the crystallization of protein human Tdp1 to demonstrate its compatibility with protein crystallization in plugs. This method for identifying immiscible liquids for use as a spacer will also be useful for applications involving manipulation of large arrays of droplets in microfluidic channels

    Where we are on θ13\theta_{13}: addendum to "Global neutrino data and recent reactor fluxes: status of three-flavour oscillation parameters"

    In this addendum to arXiv:1103.0734 we consider the recent results from long-baseline νμνe\nu_\mu\to\nu_e searches at the T2K and MINOS experiments and investigate their implications for the mixing angle θ13\theta_{13} and the leptonic Dirac CP phase δ\delta. By combining the 2.5σ2.5\sigma indication for a non-zero value of θ13\theta_{13} coming from T2K data with global neutrino oscillation data we obtain a significance for θ13>0\theta_{13} > 0 of about 3σ3\sigma with best fit points sin2θ13=0.013(0.016)\sin^2\theta_{13} = 0.013(0.016) for normal (inverted) neutrino mass ordering. These results depend somewhat on assumptions concerning the analysis of reactor neutrino data.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures and 1 tabl
