National Ignition Facility frequency converter development
A preliminary error budget for the third harmonic converter for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser driver has been developed using a root-sum-square-accumulation of error sources. Such a budget sets an upper bound on the allowable magnitude of the various effects that reduce conversion efficiency. Development efforts on crystal mounting technology and crystal quality studies are discussed

Identification of host odour attractants for tsetse flies. Final report 1986-1990
Tsetse flies, Glossina spp., are blood-feeding insects and vectors of trypanosomes, microorganisms which cause sleeping sickness in man and a similar disease, "nagana" in domestic animals. The economic importance of trypanosomiasis is the constraint it imposes on orderly rural development in Africa, leading to under-exploitation of infested land and over-exploitation and degradation of trypanosomiasis-free areas.
Traps and targets which attract tsetse flies and kill them could provide environmentally-acceptable, appropriate technology for monitoring and control of tsetse in Africa. Unbaited devices providing only visual attraction have proved effective in monitoring and control of riverine species of tsetse, but not the savannah species found in the fly belt of Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe covered by the EDF Regional Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Control Project (RTTCP).
Previously, collaborative was begun between glossinologists of the Zimbabwe Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) and UK Tsetse Research Laboratory (TRL) and chemists at NRI. This brought together the experience of the DVS in the field, the experience of TRL in laboratory bioassay work, and the experience of NRI in using gas chromatography linked to electroantennography (GC-EAG) and chemical techniques to detect and identify insect behaviour-modifying chemicals. Tsetse attractants produced by host animals were identified and synthesised, and dispensing systems for these compounds devised. Traps and targets impregnated with insecticide, baited with these lures were shown to provide effective control of the savannah tsetse species, G. pallidipes and G. m. morsitans
Defining biodiverse reforestation: Why it matters for climate change mitigation and biodiversity
Reforestation to capture and store atmospheric carbon is increasingly championed as a climate change mitigation policy response. Reforestation plantings have the potential to provide conservation co-benefits when diverse mixtures of native species are planted, and there are growing attempts to monetise biodiversity benefits from carbon reforestation projects, particularly within emerging carbon markets. But what is meant by ‘biodiverse’ across different stakeholders and groups implementing and overseeing these projects and how do these perceptions compare with long-standing scientific definitions? Here, we discuss approaches to, and definitions of, biodiversity in the context of reforestation for carbon sequestration. Our aim is to review how the concept of biodiversity is defined and applied among stakeholders (e.g., governments, carbon certifiers and farmers) and rights holders (i.e., First Nations people) engaging in reforestation, and to identify best-practice methods for restoring biodiversity in these projects. We find that some stakeholders have a vague understanding of diversity across varying levels of biological organisation (genes to ecosystems). While most understand that biodiversity underpins ecosystem functions and services, many stakeholders may not appreciate the difficulties of restoring biodiversity akin to reference ecosystems. Consequently, biodiversity goals are rarely explicit, and project goals may never be achieved because the levels of restored biodiversity are inadequate to support functional ecosystems and desired ecosystem services. We suggest there is significant value in integrating biodiversity objectives into reforestation projects and setting specific restoration goals with transparent reporting outcomes will pave the way for ensuring reforestation projects have meaningful outcomes for biodiversity, and legitimate incentive payments for biodiversity and natural capital accounting

A phenomenological model of the Landau type forms the basis for a study of
elastic distortions near the spin-Peierls transition in . The
atomic displacements proposed by Hirota {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf
73}, 736 (1994)] are accounted for by the model which includes linear coupling
between and distortions. displacements are seen to be responsible
for anomalies in the elastic properties {\it at} , whereas incipient
distortions give rise to temperature dependence below . A discussion of

Deuteron Electroweak Disintegration
We study the deuteron electrodisintegration with inclusion of the neutral
currents focusing on the helicity asymmetry of the exclusive cross section in
coplanar geometry. We stress that a measurement of this asymmetry in the quasi
elastic region is of interest for an experimental determination of the weak
form factors of the nucleon, allowing one to obtain the parity violating
electron neutron asymmetry. Numerically, we consider the reaction at low
momentum transfer and discuss the sensitivity of the helicity asymmetry to the
strangeness radius and magnetic moment. The problems coming from the finite

Nuclear Modification Factor for Charged Pions and Protons at Forward Rapidity in Central Au+Au Collisions at 200 GeV
We present spectra of charged pions and protons in 0-10% central Au+Au
collisions at GeV at mid-rapidity () and forward
pseudorapidity () measured with the BRAHMS experiment at RHIC. The
spectra are compared to spectra from p+p collisions at the same energy scaled
by the number of binary collisions. The resulting nuclear modification factors
for central Au+Au collisions at both and exhibit suppression
for charged pions but not for (anti-)protons at intermediate . The
ratios have been measured up to GeV/ at the two
rapidities and the results indicate that a significant fraction of the charged
hadrons produced at intermediate range are (anti-)protons at both
mid-rapidity and
Parity violating target asymmetry in electron - proton scattering
We analyze the parity-violating (PV) components of the analyzing power in
elastic electron-proton scattering and discuss their sensitivity to the strange
quark contributions to the proton weak form factors. We point out that the
component of the analyzing power along the momentum transfer is independent of
the electric weak form factor and thus compares favorably with the PV beam
asymmetry for a determination of the strangeness magnetic moment. We also show
that the transverse component could be used for constraining the strangeness
radius. Finally, we argue that a measurement of both components could give

Shifting sows: longitudinal changes in the periparturient faecal microbiota of primiparous and multiparous sows
Knowledge of periparturient longitudinal changes in sow microbiota composition is necessary to fully understand her role in the development of the piglet microbiota, but also to improve gut health and performance of the sow in lactation. Primiparous sows face the challenge of partitioning nutrients to support maternal growth in addition to supporting foetal growth and the demands of lactation. Additional metabolic stress present during the periparturient period may induce changes in the microbiota profile between primiparous and multiparous sows. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, the study aimed to characterise the longitudinal changes in the periparturient microbiota and identify differences within the sow microbiota profile associated with parity. Faecal samples from primiparous (n = 13) and multiparous (n = 16) sows were collected at four different time points (day - 6, - 1, 3 and 8) in relation to farrowing (day 0). Microbiota richness was lowest on day 3 and - 1 of the periparturient period (P < 0.05). Microbiota community composition, assessed by weighted and unweighted UniFrac distances, demonstrated longitudinal changes, with day 3 samples clustering away from all other sampling time points (P < 0.05). The relative abundance of several genera segregated gestation from lactation samples including Roseburia, Prevotella 1, Prevotella 2, Christensenellaceae R-7 group, Ruminococcaceae UCG-002 and Ruminococcaceae UCG-010 (P < 0.01). Furthermore, day 3 was characterised by a significant increase in the relative abundance of Escherichia/Shigella, Fusobacterium and Bacteroides, and a decrease in Alloprevotella, Prevotellaceae UCG-003 and Ruminococcus 1 (P < 0.001). Primiparous sows had overall lower periparturient microbiota diversity (P < 0.01) and there was a significant interaction between parity and sampling time point, with primiparous sows having lower microbiota richness on day - 6 (P < 0.001). There was a significant interaction between sow parity and sampling time point on microbiota composition on day - 6 and - 1 (unweighted UniFrac distances;  ≤ 0.01) and day 8 (weighted and unweighted UniFrac distances; P < 0.05). Whilst no significant interactions between sow parity and sampling day were observed for genera relative abundances, multiparous sows had a significantly higher relative abundance of Bacteroidetes dgA-11 gut group and Prevotellaceae UCG-004 (P < 0.01). This study demonstrates that the sow microbiota undergoes longitudinal changes, which are collectively related to periparturient changes in the sow environment, diet and physiological changes to support foetal growth, delivery and the onset of lactation, but also sow parity
On the effects of the magnetic field and the isotopic substitution upon the infrared absorption of manganites
Employing a variational approach that takes into account electron-phonon and
magnetic interactions in perovskites with , the
effects of the magnetic field and the oxygen isotope substitution on the phase
diagram, the electron-phonon correlation function and the infrared absorption
at are studied. The lattice displacements show a strong correlation
with the conductivity and the magnetic properties of the system. Then the
conductivity spectra are characterized by a marked sensitivity to the external
parameters near the phase boundary.Comment: 10 figure
Forward and midrapidity like-particle ratios from p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV
We present a measurement of pi-\pi+, K-/K+ and pbar/p from p+p collisions at
sqrt(s) = 20 0GeV over the rapidity range 0<y<3.4. For pT < 2.0 GeV/c we see no
significant transverse momentum dependence of the ratios. All three ratios are
independent of rapidity for y ~< 1.5 and then steadily decline from y ~ 1.5 to
y ~ 3. The pi-\pi+ ratio is below unity for y > 2.0. The pbar/p ratio is very
similar for p+p and 20% central Au+Au collisions at all rapidities. In the
fragmentation region the three ratios seem to be independent of beam energy
when viewed from the rest frame of one of the protons. Theoretical models based
on quark-diquark breaking mechanisms overestimate the pbar/p ratio up to y ~<
3. Including additional mechanisms for baryon number transport such as baryon
