    Comparing the performance of FA, DFA and DMA using different synthetic long-range correlated time series

    Notwithstanding the significant efforts to develop estimators of long-range correlations (LRC) and to compare their performance, no clear consensus exists on what is the best method and under which conditions. In addition, synthetic tests suggest that the performance of LRC estimators varies when using different generators of LRC time series. Here, we compare the performances of four estimators [Fluctuation Analysis (FA), Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA), Backward Detrending Moving Average (BDMA), and centred Detrending Moving Average (CDMA)]. We use three different generators [Fractional Gaussian Noises, and two ways of generating Fractional Brownian Motions]. We find that CDMA has the best performance and DFA is only slightly worse in some situations, while FA performs the worst. In addition, CDMA and DFA are less sensitive to the scaling range than FA. Hence, CDMA and DFA remain "The Methods of Choice" in determining the Hurst index of time series.Comment: 6 pages (including 3 figures) + 3 supplementary figure

    Multi-scale polarisation phenomena

    Multi-scale methods that separate different time or spatial scales are among the most powerful techniques in physics, especially in applications that study nonlinear systems with noise. When the time scales (noise and perturbation) are of the same order, the scales separation becomes impossible. Thus, the multi-scale approach has to be modified to characterise a variety of noise-induced phenomena. Here, based on stochastic modelling and analytical study, we demonstrate in terms of the fluctuation-induced phenomena and Hurst R/S analysis metrics that the matching scales of random birefringence and pump–signal states of polarisation interaction in a fibre Raman amplifier results in a new random birefringence-mediated phenomenon, which is similar to stochastic anti-resonance. The observed phenomenon, apart from the fundamental interest, provides a base for advancing multi-scale methods with application to different coupled nonlinear systems ranging from lasers (multimode, mode-locked, random, etc.) to nanostructures (light-mediated conformation of molecules and chemical reactions, Brownian motors, etc.)

    The Natural Statistics of Audiovisual Speech

    Humans, like other animals, are exposed to a continuous stream of signals, which are dynamic, multimodal, extended, and time varying in nature. This complex input space must be transduced and sampled by our sensory systems and transmitted to the brain where it can guide the selection of appropriate actions. To simplify this process, it's been suggested that the brain exploits statistical regularities in the stimulus space. Tests of this idea have largely been confined to unimodal signals and natural scenes. One important class of multisensory signals for which a quantitative input space characterization is unavailable is human speech. We do not understand what signals our brain has to actively piece together from an audiovisual speech stream to arrive at a percept versus what is already embedded in the signal structure of the stream itself. In essence, we do not have a clear understanding of the natural statistics of audiovisual speech. In the present study, we identified the following major statistical features of audiovisual speech. First, we observed robust correlations and close temporal correspondence between the area of the mouth opening and the acoustic envelope. Second, we found the strongest correlation between the area of the mouth opening and vocal tract resonances. Third, we observed that both area of the mouth opening and the voice envelope are temporally modulated in the 2–7 Hz frequency range. Finally, we show that the timing of mouth movements relative to the onset of the voice is consistently between 100 and 300 ms. We interpret these data in the context of recent neural theories of speech which suggest that speech communication is a reciprocally coupled, multisensory event, whereby the outputs of the signaler are matched to the neural processes of the receiver

    Long memory estimation for complex-valued time series

    Long memory has been observed for time series across a multitude of fields and the accurate estimation of such dependence, e.g. via the Hurst exponent, is crucial for the modelling and prediction of many dynamic systems of interest. Many physical processes (such as wind data), are more naturally expressed as a complex-valued time series to represent magnitude and phase information (wind speed and direction). With data collection ubiquitously unreliable, irregular sampling or missingness is also commonplace and can cause bias in a range of analysis tasks, including Hurst estimation. This article proposes a new Hurst exponent estimation technique for complex-valued persistent data sampled with potential irregularity. Our approach is justified through establishing attractive theoretical properties of a new complex-valued wavelet lifting transform, also introduced in this paper. We demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed estimation method through simulations across a range of sampling scenarios and complex- and real-valued persistent processes. For wind data, our method highlights that inclusion of the intrinsic correlations between the real and imaginary data, inherent in our complex-valued approach, can produce different persistence estimates than when using real-valued analysis. Such analysis could then support alternative modelling or policy decisions compared with conclusions based on real-valued estimation

    Results of a human factors experiment of the usability and patient acceptance of a new autoinjector in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Materials and methods: This was a randomized, single-center study conducted with 65 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Patients performed six simulated injections. Assessments of patient device acceptance and device usability were made by patient reports and independent observations of compliance with the device instruction for use (IFU) following single injections and repeated injections. Results: A total of 390 simulated injections were performed. Patient device acceptance was high; more than 90% of patients found each of the tested criteria to be acceptable (>80% was required for statistical significance; P<0.016). Perceived ease of use and simplicity of the three-step process resulted in high acceptance scores: mean scores (± standard deviation) were 8.71 (±1.18) and 8.05 (±0.37), respectively, on a 0–10-point scale. Patients also expressed their acceptance with the ease and usefulness of the detection of the remaining drug in the autoinjector. In addition, 80% of patients declared that they would recommend the device to someone else. Globally, the human factors tested (age, sex, hand disability [Cochin score], extent of previous experience with self-injection [ie, expert or naïve]) had no impact on IFU device compliance. In particular, the lack of a Cochin score interaction indicated that the degree of hand disability is not a predictive factor of poor self-injection capability with this autoinjector. Conclusion: This study demonstrated a high level of patient acceptance for self-injection with this autoinjector among patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
